About Tony Chapman
Tony and Elizabeth are Florida natives, and both grew up enjoying life on the water. After studying chemistry at FSU in Tallahassee, Tony decided to take a break and go sailing with a friend in the Bahamas. Ending up in Miami, he eventually met Elizabeth, and soon discover that she shared his love of the ocean. Even before they were married, they pooled their meager savings to buy a small cruising sailboat which they enjoyed sailing on Biscayne Bay. After working in medical research for several years, Tony decided to return to his first love, the ocean, and became a professional sailor. While working as a boat builder and delivery captain, he studied small craft yacht design, and eventually co-designed and built his custom 40 ocean-racing sloop named "Laughing Gull". Elizabeth worked as an arts and crafts teacher at a private school, then started a small plant nursery that specialized in tropical bamboo, palms, and heliconias. Recently Elizabeth has returned to her art work as a hobby and enjoys collecting all things nautical, especially sea shells, driftwood, and seaglass.
Tony Chapman purchased this Cottage in 2015
Why Tony Chapman chose Jonesport
After enduring too many sweltering summers in South Florida, Tony and Elizabeth decided to look for a small vacation cottage somewhere in Maine where they could escape the summer heat. They found the small fishing community of Jonesport to be a refreshing change after visiting the more "tourist-heavy" towns further south. Jonesport is the real deal... an authentic working fishing village where you can buy fresh lobster (or clams, or fish) directly from the fisherman who caught it. When they discovered the little "Cottage by the Sea" and rented it, it was love at first sight. When they found out that it was for sale, they didn't hesitate to buy it, and have decided to keep it available (when they are not using it) for rental guests to enjoy as it has been in the past.
What makes this Cottage unique
Cottage by the Sea is very unique, in that it offers a true "Million Dollar View" without a hefty price tag. It is a perfect place for a week-long escape from the rat-race, where you can kick back and chill out. Here you can dine on the freshest Maine lobster cooked on your own stove (large lobster pot included), while sitting on the outdoor deck listening to the sounds of sea gulls and the ocean surf on the rocks just a few feet below you. Just a short walk from the cottage is Bar Island, where at low tide you can walk from the shore to the island and explore the scenery (Note: the local bald eagles frequent the tall trees here, so BRING YOUR CAMERA!). A few steps further takes you to Sandy River Beach, which is ideal for beach-combing or swimming (if you like cool water!). If you feel like sight-seeing, the cottage is ideally located so that numerous places of interest are only a short drive away. The Cottage's Handbook has an extensive list of local places to visit, restaurants, and local information with directions.

Absolutely exceeded my expectations. A genuine Maine coastal experience with an amazing view!
My first impression of this genuine Maine Coastal Cottage by the Sea...was of The Lovely Maine decor, Comfy living and sleeping spaces and accommodations that met all our needs.
My Second impression was when we stepped into the backyard to a Grand Ocean View. It was stunning to us!! We just sat taking in the sounds of the waves crashing below, the bird activity, the Lobster boats, the islands that appear along with the tidal changes. I enjoyed many breathtaking Sunrises and the moon and stars were quite impressive as well. It was also very quiet. Nice and private...
Day trips to Bar Harbor and Acadia made us miss the cottage. There was a nice State Park called Rouque Bluffs...for strolling on trails or along their 1/2 mile beach. The town of Jonesport is a working fishing town and there are an abundance of Wild Maine Blueberry fields as well.
Could not of asked for a better week. Our expectations were exceeded. If you are looking for Privacy in a genuine Maine Coastal town with a Grand View this is for you!!!

Charming Cottage with a stunning view
I had just a terrific week! I was looking for a place I could relax and unwind and that is what I got. The cottage is very charming and very complete in all respects. Well stocked kitchen, very nicely furnished, stunning view and when you come when the weather is perfect like I did, one could not ask for more. Jonesport and surrounding area is full of great things to see and do, without the mobs of tourists. I look forward to my next visit. Thanks Tony and Kathleen for opening up your Cottage by the Sea. A real hidden treasure.

Dear Jim -
Thank you so much for your kind words about our little cottage by the sea.
The very things that you mentioned (peaceful, stunning vews, and relaxed atmosphere) are what drew us to the cottage in the summer of 2015, and now we really enjoy sharing it with others as well. We are excited about going there ourselves, later this week, so we hope you saved some of the good weather for us!
We hope that you get a chance to visit us again in the future, and good luck in all your travels.

Dear Cottage Guest -
Thank you for your kind comments about our little hideaway by the sea. Our memorabilia is the result of many many years of collecting flotsam & jetsam, and we enjoy sharing it with all our guests. We hope you will return again.

Peaceful and Relaxing Experience
I just returned from a wonder week at your cottage. The weather was wonderful, I took lots of long walks with my dog to the beach, and enjoyed a very relaxing and tranquil week, just what I was hoping for! The listing description was very accurate and the cottage was clean and had everything I could have needed-thank you! I found the space to be cozy and just right for myself and my small dog. I so enjoyed sleeping in the "Loon Bedroom" and being able to see the stars light up the sky at night, the moon shining on the water at night and waking to the beautiful sunrises.
I would certainly recommend this cottage for anyone looking for a relaxing, peaceful location without alot of "frills", but close enough to great seafood and outfitted with cable and internet if you need to occasionally stay "connected"to the rest of the world. I hope to plan for another visit next year. Thank you for letting me stay at your cottage!

Location, Location, Location
The three most important factors in real estate or in this case vacation rental. We split our vacation between a few days in the hustle and bustle of Ogunquit (spending too much eating out and shopping) then moved to Jonesport for relaxation. And relax we did. We went shopping for groceries when we arrived on Saturday. We didn't use the car again until Friday. Inside or out you have an amazing view. Reading and watching the changing tides and passing boats was a daily activity. Walks to Sandy River Beach and out to Bar Island at low tide were for those more active days.
The cottage is clean and compact. The large deck(where I spent the majority of the week) is great. The bed is comfortable. The bedroom facing the ocean has a great window for star gazing from bed at night (the sky is so dark you see more stars than you can imagine) and seeing the ocean the moment you wake up which is early due to the earliest sunrises in the country. The window doesn't have a shade, but then you wouldn't be watching stars as you fall asleep.
You have no need to bring spices etc. for the kitchen. It is very well stocked. It could use more tall glasses, but otherwise it had everything you'd want. There are plenty of towels and with a washer and dryer we didn't need to arrive home with a pile of dirty laundry.
The owner was quick in response to our booking and any questions and even called on the day we arrived to assure everything was OK.
We'll be keeping this cottage in mind for when we need another relaxing escape.
Thank you for your kind comments, and the suggestions about the need for tall drinking glasses & the curtain in the guest bedroom... FYI, I've already ordered new curtains for this window, and they should be installed by now. I'll contact the housekeeper to supply more tall drinking glasses right away.
Thanks again for your comments...we're very happy you had a relaxing time.
The description of the property is very accurate. The best part is the view. We enjoyed the view every morning with coffee. The upgrades are more than expected. The owner was always available and very accommodating. The location of the cottage is such that it is very serene and quiet. We loved cooking our own lobsters after we purchased them right in the fishing village of Jonesport. We explored the small island within walking distance of the cottage during low tide, and listening to the waves at night was very peaceful. Our all day excursions included the Acadia National Park and St. John, Canada. We also dined in Lubec, and on Beals Island which has the best lobster roll on the East coast, as they serve each order with an entire lobster claw on top of already filled roll. Jonesport is not a loud touristy city, and we enjoyed that very much. The local residents are very helpful and friendly. We would love to have the view that we had from the huge window and deck of the cottage on all of our vacations, as it truly is one in a million.
Thank you, Grace, for your kind review of our cottage. We're so glad that you had such an enjoyable time, and hope that you'll be able to visit us again in the future.

Nearby Places Of Interest Within walking distance: Bar Island - Looking out the front window, there is an island just to the left called Bar Island. At low tide (and for about 2 hours each side of low tide), you can walk out to the island and find periwinkles, clams, mussels, etc. Eagles often frequent the island and land on the treetops to eat their catch. You can watch them with the telescope or the binoculars provided by the cottage. The telescope is also great for spotting seals sunning on Ballast Island further out (look for "shiny rocks" that move). Sandy River Beach - Just a quarter of a mile north of the cottage near the shore side of Bar Island is a lovely white sand beach – nice for taking a swim, a walk or for beach-combing. If you choose to drive, there is free parking across the road from the Beach. A short drive : Jonesport - An authentic working "Down East" fishing community, with a picturesque harbor full of lobster boats. Go to the local Fisherman's Coop to buy fresh lobster directly from the fishermen on the dock, or drive over the short bridge to Beals Island, where you can have a tasty lunch at Bay View Take-Out. Also on Beals Island are the Wass Island Nature Conservancy Trails. You can get groceries at Manaford's in Jonesport, or any of several small convenience stores around town (some of these also sell gas). Machias - The closest large town, it is only 20 minutes from the cottage. Machias has a well-stocked supermarket (Hanafords), with a pharmacy nearby. There are also several excellent restaurants in Machias, including Helen's (recommended),the Riverside Inn and Restaurant, and the Bluebird Ranch Restaurant. For a high-end dining experience, the Chandler River Lodge can be found on the road between Jonesport and Machias. (NOTE: call ahead for restaurant's schedules... some are only open seasonally). There are also several smaller eateries in and around Machias (even a McDonalds). In case of emergency, Down East Hospital in Machias provides excellent health care for the region. There is also a laundromat in Machias, and a well-stocked wine store next door to it. Bad Little Falls Park, Machias - Falls are on one of the last great Atlantic Salmon rivers in the East. Jasper Beach, Machiasport - Walk on the beach where pebbles are abundant with jasper, after which the beach is named. Roque Bluffs State Park and Beach – Mile long sandy beach. Ocean & fresh water swimming; restrooms. Take Hwy 187 to Hwy 1. Drive north through Jonesboro and take a right when you see the sign to Roque Bluffs State Park. Indian Pictographs, Machiasport - Boat excursion to view ancient rock carvings made by early local indians dating back 3,000 years; Blueberry Barrens, Columbia Falls, Centerville - 12,000 acres of wild blueberry land. Blossoms in June and harvest (raking) in August (also in Cherryfield and Harrington). For many other nearby places of interest, please check out the Guest Notebook provided in the Cottage.
