Convenient place for a trip to Washington DC
This is a quiet place and we all had good sleep. The location is good and it is not far from the local restaurants and stores. Thanks for upgrading us to the rooms upstairs.
Not suitable for listing at HomeAway/VRBO
I regret to have to write this review, because I have no reason to think that the owner of this property is anything but kind and well meaning. In good conscience, however, for the sake of future potential renters, I feel compelled to describe this vacation property.
I have rented vacation homes through HomeAway and VRBO for many years (and I have never rated a property less than 3 stars). Always looking for a good bargain, I am very familiar with budget accommodations at these sites. I know what to expect when I am paying less than the average price for properties in a particular area.
I expect them to be a little inconveniently located. I expect them to be a bit small. I expect the decor to be out-of-date. I expect the mattresses to be somewhat lumpy, even.
There are many things about this property that I did NOT expect, however, even for a budget rental.
I did not expect a light fixture with an empty bulb socket. I did not expect a faucet handle that moved in its place when I turned it or a toilet chain that was held together with a twist tie. I did not expect the bathroom door to not close all the way or the floor of the entire apartment to be slanted. Most importantly, I did not expect it to be dirty.
As I said, I wish I could write a different review. To end on a positive note, the neighborhood was charming with its bungalow-style houses, and it felt safe. Also, a supermarket was within walking distance, and there was an especially good playground a few blocks west, at the Fort Stevens Recreation Center.
Please read the other reviews. There are multiple highhat lights throughout the place so one bulb missing is not as dire as it seems. We did have an issue with a cleaner not showing up in between listings so that was a problem that we regret. Toilet has been fixed (and I stand by my clever temporary fix with the twisty-tie:)). Slanted floors are from the orginal design of the home and typical in old basements and actually barely noticeable. This person must have been a bit OCD frankly!
Affordable DC acommodations
Our family of four stayed here during our kids' spring break. It was a fairly tight fit, but worked out for the four of us. I would not want to try fitting another person though. The location was great, felt very safe and was a reasonable walk (or a very easy drive) to the metro station and not a bad drive to the capitol (usually ~25 minutes). There is also a bus stop very near by. Grocery stores and restaurants are also close. We enjoyed the yard, fire pit and visiting with the dog and cats in the yard. It was a bit lacking in amenities; we had no trash bags or dish soap and only one cereal/soup bowl. Things are also fairly worn; one of our sheets had a rip in it and the padding on the fold out was quite stained. That being said, the owner was extremely helpful and quick to respond to any issues we brought to her attention.
As always, please bring any needs to my attention and I will be happy to address them. My apologies re. the bowls: we had a family of 8 staying upstairs and I am afraid the bowls got co-opted for them and not returned to apartment. Also, the kitchen soap disappeared with a guest, i believe and I replaced after the next guest brought it to my attention. Happy to accommodate most requests / needs!
country hideaway in a big city
The place is a small basement studio, that is reasonable for its price. The owner is a nice lady eager to help. The fully equipped kitchen is a big plus. Another big plus is a old backyard with the small table, fire pit, hammock and trampolin that we used quite a bit. The place is about 6 miles from the Capitol. The nearby Rock creek park is wonderful. More towels, toilet paper and trash bags would be helpful for next visitors. Thanks a lot for the nice stay!
