Villa in Old Agde, Herault, Languedoc Roussillon, France - Best Of Both Worlds Location With An X Factor Holiday Home, Yet A Short Stroll To The Market And Fun
- english, french
Have loved Agde for 20 years and have a very special relationship with this house, where I have so many happy memories.
Thor purchased this Villa in 1990
Why Thor chose Agde
Love at first sight, tucked away in its own garden paradise, I could see the potential for a great family home -with so much room everybody can fit in!
What makes this Villa unique
We just love the market and roaming far and wide in the mountains and beyond. With all the great places to eat and an authentic feel still surrounding the whole area -it really is a great place to have fun and relax.

House feels uncared for.
We are four families who have been holidaying together for many years, and have stayed in a wide range of accommodation. This is the first time we have posted a negative review, and we have thought very hard before doing it. We have given the owner opportunity to reply privately but he has not responded.
From the moment we arrived, alarm bells were ringing. There were only 6 wine glasses for 18 people, 3 broken cafetieres, a broken toilet and washing machine, not to mention many little things such as missing light bulbs etc. Broken items (fans etc) were everywhere, pushed to the side with no attempt to repair or replace them. One of the beds was broken and had been (unsatisfactorily) repaired, so one couple had to sleep on the mattress on the floor. The house details promised wifi, but there was none. There was rat poison under the sink. As well as the level of neglect and disrepair, everything needed a good deep clean. We were told the toilet and washing machine would not be fixed until the Wednesday. The housekeeper went and got us 12 more glasses, and after some persuasion organised a plumber who sorted the toilet and washing machine the next day. However, there was nothing she could do about the pool. It was obvious as soon as we arrived that it was cloudy and dirty, with a foul slick of who knows what on the surface and layers of grit on the bottom: basically, unusable. As this was one of the main reasons we booked the villa, this was a major problem. We raised it immediately with the housekeeper, who tinkered with it, but it was very obvious that there was no way that this was going to solve the problem. It clearly required draining and starting again. As we couldn’t use the pool, we had to spend a fair amount of money and effort getting 18 of us to the beach at Grau D’Agde (which was lovely - but if we had known the pool was unusable, or wanted a beach holiday, we would have booked a house in Grau D’Agde).
This house is NOT as advertised. The photos are very old (eg shutters which look recently painted and cared for are anything but; the long outside table does not exist etc etc). Do not book it if you want a pool, or expect a basic level of equipment.
In addition to this, a neighbour was also abusive to us, and we found out that there had been a history of this with previous guests.
These people harassed my neighbors who had complained about their wild partying and then vindictively subjected them to abuse.
They then on their last night filled the pool with motor oil so they could get a refund - police investigating.
Don’t believe their lies, I am here now looking at the 3 coffee presses I got in April and all work fine. Word
Our family holiday
This is a wonderful rustic property, typically French and creates a very enjoyable experience. The property is of significant size and has more space than necessary. So, no getting in each other's way. The facilities are exactly as described and the property is well equipped. Strongly recommended.
Very spacious + very French villa- great location
This is a very spacious and very rusticly French property. It is very spacious and in a great location. We walked to the beach, the town centre, restaurants and markets. Keith was really helpful and was very prompt to fix things which we mentioned to him. The property is so big that even with 15 people, everyone had their own space. Thank you.
Special interest holidays:
People have rented my home for cooking and painting classes. For many years we had a large group of students who did Judo -they brought their own mats, which they could spread out in the main sitting room -you really need to stand in there to see how big it really is - they loved it as they could all fit in there-and came back every year for ages.
The main room is therefore extremely versatile -how it is decorated now with big new sofas it feels cool and calming- but this can be rearranged for a workshop or yoga class to be conducted in a holiday/residential atmosphere.
The house is a couple of kms from beach, nice to cycle there along the river side. I prefer St Vincent beach which is between Cap Agde and Grau Agde, water sports and fishing. The night clubs on the Isle de Loisier are world famous and only a short drive near Cap Agde on the beach. We have had many a memorable night there and at the fun park, although the kids favorite is Aqualand -which we think is one of the best water parks in the world!
Agde is great for Ryanair passengers, nearby train from both Montpellier and Carcasonne and house is walking distance from Agde railway station. If you don't know this there is now a flight direct to Agde/Beziers. This can be well priced to. The airport is about 10 minutes for the house so this makes traveling to Arc on Ciel real easy and amazingly affordable.
There is so much to do and see, but this is a place for beach and culture, for day trips into the hills and mountains, for picnics and vinyards, for exploring the Cathar country and the medieval towns. I could go on. One of my favorite places to visit is call Pezenas. A local town, full of artists and wonderful restaurants. A little larger than Agde and a great place to wander and visit all the authentic antique shops.
Last count there are 130 authentic restaurants in Agde, walking distance to supermarket, bakery and newspapers. We went to Pezenas recently, having never been there before and it was stunning with loads of antique shops, a real gem. Agde has evolved since i first bought this house 20 years ago and has got better and better facilities. There is a huge Hyper U -with everything for when you first arrive and want to stock up with the basics. Buy your wine in the local Cave, you will buy a plastic barrel and fill up from what looks like a petrol pump. The wine is great and cheap. I guarantee you will be back for a fill up at least once! The reason why i love this part of France so much is that you get an authentic S of F experience but without the 10 euro drinks and euro gangsters, you can still find a quiet beach and an authentic French restaurant. The seafood is awesome. The local towns are all ancient and stunning and you can take a road trip to a huge variety of different attractions and natural parks. Be brave and go off the main roads onto the little windy lanes. You will be rewarded with discovering quaint unspoilt villages and chateaux inviting you in for more wine!
