BBQ with seats and tables under a pergola around the pool for shaded alfresco dining. Games room with pool table. Full UK Sky TV, DVD player. Free WiFi. Roof terrace. An orchard with a selection of fruit. Situated on the outskirts of the village. 5 minute walk to the centre of the village where there are several traditional Portuguese bars and restaurants and a very well stocked of mini markets. 5 mins drive from the ancient town and castle of Castro Marim and the marina town of Vila Real. 10 mins drive from Monte Gordo with all its bars, restaurants, shops and Casino. 10 mins drive to Ayamonte in Spain for a change of pace, with its Tapas bars and late night entertainment. Only 5 miles to the best beach on the Algarve, Praia Verdi Beach. There are several golf courses in the area, Castro Marim Golf Club can be seen from the villa.

Apart from a couple of years in Singapore, I lived by Chester and on the Wirral, until I moved to North Wales. I'm a property developer and purchased a barn to convert in Llandegla in 1998 and its now my forever home.

Why Adrian Matthews chose Monte Francisco

I purchased the villa because I fell in love with the area...and Castro Marim Golf Club. Because this area of the Algarve is not commercialised, you get to see traditional Portugal, friendly people and restaurant prices that locals pay...not tourist prices.

What makes this villa unique

When I purchased the villa, it needed complete renovation, so I was able to put my stamp on it. I had the orchard transferred from the back to the front so that I could have a pool installed. I went for the largest pool I could without losing too much terrace. I love my swimming and it needed to comfortably hold 14 people. I had an extra 3 bathrooms added (2 en-suite) and redecorated everywhere inside and out. I did everything to the villa to a specification I would look for if I was going to rent it myself.

Everyone loved the villa - spacious, well kept and superbly equipped in a peaceful, unspoilt location. We had never visited this part of the Algarve before and were impressed by the beaches, the local people and the cost of eating out. We have enjoyed the house and the surroundings, found Vila real very charming with the proper Christmas feeling. We have been 14 people including small children for Christmas.The weather was better than expected, a lot of swimming, the pool was fantastic with good waterquality. Mrs.Y.S.(Xmas & new year 2012)

Notes on accommodation: The pool is on the same level as the villa and is surrounded by a 1.5 metre wall with a gate for access. It is also around the back for privacy, with easy access to the kitchen and games room. Outside: Private 12x6m heated pool with 1.5m wall surround, at the rear of the villa, with gate access. Large patio area around pool with a barbecue, table and chairs to seat 14 under a pergola for shade. Sun loungers. Shaded patio with access from lounge and hall with seating for 6. Landscaped gardens to the front, with a selection of fruit trees. Linen and towels provided, including pool towels, with a weekly change. Daily maid service available, please ask for details. Excellent property in quiet location

From the moment I booked property Adrian the owner was always quick to respond to anything I asked, the property was everything we hoped it would be from space to cleanliness, the pool area with BBQ & seating area was the main thing that sold the property to us as we had previously stayed in the villa next door & had looked at this villa & thought how well it was laid out. Set in a quiet location in the lovely peaceful village of Monte Francisco this is the perfect place to got away from it all.Nice Bars & restaurants in village with our favourite being Retiro dos Cacadores just off the square where Jose made us very welcome, Pedro from the management company was very attentive & called in at regular intervals to ensure everything was ok with our stay, from the welcome pack on arrival & sorting a couple of minor issues immediately. All in all I cannot recommend this villa highly enough & have already booked again for next year when there will be 15 of us eagerly awaiting the delights of this wonderful understated area of Portugal - Thank you Adrian

Brilliant Villa & Highly Recommended

Family of 15 (some infants) stayed. Smooth booking with Adrian. Upon arrival Pedro from the management company looked after things including supplying a welcome pack as we arrived late at night. Fab house, very spacious, has every accessory u can think of for cooking etc. Sitting room and all bed rooms have a/c. Pool area is gated which was ideal as we had kids with us. We spent a lot of time in the Barbecue area where the barbecue itself had a new cooking frame in it, we used this about 10 days out of 14-excellent facility and this was probably the best thing in the villa outside the 12m x 6m heated swimming pool. Villa located in a very quiet area, shop, pubs and restaurants all 5min walk away. Highly recommended villa and hope to return in the future. 👍?🏻?👍?🏻?

An exceptional villa, well presented and in a great location

I have stayed in this villa a number of times over the years and at different times of the year and it never disappoints me, family or friends. Its an easy 45 minute drive from the airport, I have always hired cars from anyone of many hire companies, and all have been good. The villa is in a nice quite village, with a shop, bars and restaurant's all close to hand. The villa is plenty big enough when I have been there in large groups and is also comfortable if in a small group. It has always been presented nicely when I arrive and is well enough equipped. The best thing about this villa is the pool and pool area. The pool is big, heated and clean with a good sized barbeque area. I have spent many many enjoyable day times and evenings around the pool, with friends, family, food and wine, what more do you need on holiday. Thank you Adrian, hope to stay again soon

A little disappointed

This was a one off holiday for my wife's birthday, I invited friends and family to stay and celebrate it with us although the villa andorinha was a lovely building the garden and villa were both neglected on the third day we had no hot water and I had to arrange gas bottles myself, my sister could not take a shower in 31 deg heat before going to the airport. And flying back to the UK, most of the stone seating was broken and replaced with plastic chairs, the BBQ area was rusted and filthy, saying all this the location is great and at the end of our stay my daughter and her family wanted to stay another week but after many attempts to contact the owner to no avail sent an email never got a reply the website said it was available but the so called management team said it wasn't and when I called the help line they told me i had to call the owner, back to square one, earlier this year we booked a villa with James villa's and hoped owners direct would be at least as good but I'm sorry I am disappointed, I would stay at this villa again but only if there was an improvement is the maintenance and back up after all it is supposed to be a luxury villa, not three star,

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, the management company that managed my villa had staff problems, and even though I was repeatedly assured by their manager that maintenance was being carried out, I can clearly see they have not. On reading this review, I immediately dismissed them and organised a new management company. I am also aware that it wasn't just my villa they neglected. There are two gas bottles, and one bottle will last 2 weeks, the management company then organise a replacement when one runs out. Again, the old management company left wanting. One of the jobs of the management company is to identify broken items and replace them like for like, this will be done. The arrangement I have with the management company is to have the BBQ area cleaned after every guest. For security purposes, all emails should be sent through Owners Direct. I don't understand how this guest tried to contact me as the last email received from him on the Owners Direct site, was in June. I have emailed him through this method but yet to receive a reply. The villa was available after their stay, and I would have been very happy to have them stay an extra week. The new management company have my authority to bring the villa back up to, and maintain, its luxury 5 star rating.

Lovely villa but suffering from some neglect and lack of maintenance

We enjoyed our stay in the lovely villa. The local people were very friendly and helpful, we ate out most nights and didn't have one complaint about any of the meals. The villa itself was ideal, however, it did suffer from some neglect and lack of maintenance, ie: shower heads hanging off the walls, several lights not working, door trim on lounge door hanging off. The pool was fantastic but the pool furniture needed replacing. The gardener was doing a good job and the gardens were well maintained. The local beaches in this area are some of the best we have ever visited and hopefully ,we will return in the future. Thank you

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, there was an issue with one of the staff at the management company. She has now left and the management company have, and has always had, my authority to maintain the villa in the best possible condition. If any guest has any issues whatsoever, a call to the management company and it will be dealt with quickly and to the best of their ability.

Lovely villa and great size pool.

We had a lovely 10 days at this villa , it was very quiet and private, noisey cockerel up the road but other than that a nice peaceful villa. On the down side we found it a bit out of the way so we had to drive to bars and restaurants which meant we couldn't have a good old drink but on the whole a nice break.

Owner's Response: In the village, within 5 to 10 minutes walk, there are a choice of several bars and restaurants and I supply a guide with their names and locations. Retiro Dos Cacadores New building, just off the square in the middle of the village, 10 metres up on the other side of the road to A Tasca. There is a small bar, which you pass through to a large restaurant. The food is very good and at a good price. They have an extensive menu and an English speaking waitress. One of our guests referred to it as a hidden gem. Sabores Da Beira It was on the same road as A Tasca and Cacadores, but has moved to the other side of the village roundabout. Big improvement. Good food, great price. Campesino RF Clube It’s on the village roundabout. More of a tapas bar than restaurant, but can do reasonable simple meals and at a good price. Large seating area outside. Lupi Closest restaurant to the villa. Up the steps leading to the village, turn right and it’s about 50 meters on your right. Excellent food. The manager Luis (Looish) speaks very good English and is a real character. A Tasca Far left hand corner of the square. It has a colourful awning out front. It has had a change of management and is now run by a local and I haven’t tested it yet. Cafe Café O Bem Amado is next door to Lupi

Special interest holidays:

On the outskirts of Vila Real de Santo Antonio (approx 10 minutes drive) there is a municiple Sports Complex which is one of the most highly regarded centres in Europe. The complex is a high performance training centre and it is recognised by the Portuguese Olympic Committee as an Official Training Centre. Aside from athletics it is also a tennis club.

Coast/Beach:

This part of the Algarve coast enjoys long sandy beaches. Between Tavira and Monte Gordo there are 5 blue flag beaches. The fantastic soft sandy beach of Praia Verde is less than 10 mins drive from the villa. Car parking, beachside restaurants and bars all present. Villa Real, less than 10 minutes away, has a wonderful marina.

Travel:

Car hire is recommended. Faro Airport is a 40 minute drive, Seville Airport 80 mins drive. Airport pickup available if required.

Distances:

5 minute walk into local village. 5 minute drive to the ancient town and castle of Castro Marim. 10 minute drive to the marina town of Vila Real. 10 minute drive to Monte Gordo. 10 minute drive to Ayamonte, Spain.

Further Details:

There are 4 water parks and two theme parks along the Algarve – all within one and a half hours drive, Zoomarine and Villamoura water parks approx 45 minutes. The villa itself is close to a huge nature reserve which has designated nature trails and bird watching facilities. There are lots of locations offering organised activities, such as horse riding or 4X4 'Safaris', within easy driving distance. For those of you who enjoy a night out on the town the nearby Monte Gordo and Ayamonte (Spain) offers lots of bars, restaurants and clubs as well as featuring a great casino complete with nightly shows for a really great night out. Tavira, about a 20 min drive, is really worth a visit. There are mini-marts (corner shop style) in the village as well as several bars, cafes, restaurants, mostly less than 5 mins walk away. For supermarkets, Banks, internet cafe's etc Castro Marim and Villa Real are a short drive away. There are directions in the villa to the best local supermarkets. For those that require the internet, there is free access at the municipal buildings at Castro Marim and Vila Real, also wi fi is available at the square in Vila Real.

Booking Notes:
25% deposit required on booking (£300 minimum), and balance paid 8 weeks before holiday. £250 damage deposit. The cost for pool heating of £200 can be refunded should you not want it, but I have to be notified prior to final payment. Laundry is changed once a week, cleaning is at end of stay but may be requested at an extra charge.
