About Calin ionescu

I am a professional engineer from Canada, where I had a successful business in Environment. In year 2000 I decided to semi-retire and I was searching a warmer climate where to spend the chilly Canadian winters. I like nature: plants, flowers, arbors, animals, birds, insects and generally every creature on our planet.

Calin ionescu purchased this villa in 2003

Why Calin ionescu chose Cantón Carrillo

I researched many places around the world. Only Costa Rica met fully my expectations: a friendly and secure country, exceptional people, ocean, sun and good climate. The testy beer was a bonus!

As well the location is easy to get to and from Liberia Airport. Ocotal and its beach are peacefull and they are not crowded with turists.

What makes this villa unique

I like the serenity of this place, the incredible mornings with the calm ocean and blue sky, the dreaming sunsets. I like to explore and visit Costa Rica. After eight years in this country I still have to discover many beautiful things and special places. I love taking my dog, Mr. Ky for a morning walk on the beach while shiping the testy Costa Rican coffee.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Guest:

Thank you for reviewing your accommodation in our villa. We regret for not knowing what cookware utensils you prefer in order to provide them. In our correspondence, we didn’t offer or promise a dishwasher. Two months ago we ordered in San Jose new seat cushions for the dining room chairs. We are still waiting to get them. TIGO, our WiFi provider, investigated your complaint. They stated that our WiFi system works well; the reception depends also on the quality and strength of user's equipment. You came here in the middle of the Easter Holiday week. This is a respected celebration in Costa Rica and, excepting groceries stores and travel agencies, all businesses are closed. It was impossible to find a skilled technician to fix the A / C during this celebration. However, in the first day when businesses resume activity in Costa Rica, the problems have been corrected immediately. Considering the circumstances, you seemed to be happy of our fast response. Indeed, we suggest to our guests to keep inside the apartments a comfortable temperature of 20 Celsius degrees or 70 Fahrenheit degrees. This is 10 C degrees (or 20 F degrees) less than outside temperature of 30 C degrees or 90 F degrees. I apologize, I didn’t intended to lecture you. Our daily maintenance program includes cleaning and inspecting of every room, change bath towels and bed sheets, fixing and repairing things when necessary. Our maid does not touch any of guests’ stuff. This is a normal custom to any hotel and/or rental villa. We mentioned to you that our villa is locate 2 miles from Coco. Some people appreciate it some not. According with Costa Rica Legislation, Father Rooster restaurant, as any other restaurant here, must charge 10% gratuity and 13% service tax. This is the law!

We are confident that the majority of issues addressed in your review have been clarified in our response to your review. We will work harder in the future in order to better understand our guests' wishes and needs. Thank you, Manager

Great, relaxing location close to amenities and beach

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with 3 adults and four small children. The location is wonderful and quiet and just far enough from the touristy town of Coco to feel relaxing but close enough to shops and restaurants (about 5-10 minute drive). My only criticism was that it was not an easy walk to the beach for us. I think if we didn’t have kids with us it would be fine but we ended up driving each time. The driveway is very steep and the road that made the walk short was washed out in October so we just popped in the car and drove 5 mins which was not a problem. Playa Ocotal is beautiful and quiet and was our favorite beach we visited while there. Father Roosters restaurant is right there and was a great setting for meals. The kitchen is equipped with all cooking supplies but there no salt, oil, paper towels, etc and bring your own shampoo and soap and such. I highly recommend this Home to any groups traveling to Guanacaste!

Owner's Response: Thank you for you review! We are very happy that you enjoy so much our villa and its location. Indeed, Costa Rica had a bad storm last October which destroyed the direct road to the beach. However the road is under repairs and soon the trip to the beach will be enjoyable as before. We do provide liquid soup in all our bathrooms. I think in this particular case our guest preferred a soap bar instead. If some guests forgot to get some cooking supplies please just ask we are happy to help with that.

The place to go while in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

We were in Costa Rica this year in June, in our honeymoon, at the beginning of the rainy season. Initially we were supposed to stay only 2 days at Vila El Sueno at Ocotal Beach and then visit other locations in Costa Rica. But when we got there, we were wonderfully impressed by this peaceful location, with its great view over the ocean and the nice beaches around, so we decided to stay for 2 more days. Even if the rainy season had just begun, the weather was nice during the day and whenever we got a shower in the evenings, we'd found it as a real blessing.

Since the villa is just a few minutes away from Coco, we were able to go out and experience some of the local cuisine (the locals call them "SODAs", don't have any idea of what that means). The only point I would make is that the roads are in a poor condition, so if I would go to Costa Rica again, I'd definitely rent an SUV

Sandy and Dean, the property managers, were great hosts and they made us feel like home right away. They provided us with all the information needed, where to eat, what to see and what to avoid, in order for us to make the best of our time there. Even Coco, their dog, was a friendly and funny host :)

The Vila El Sueno rooms weren't so fancy, but very clean and comfortable (AC, big bed, cable TV, wifi, refrigerator). Also having access to a real kitchen made it easier to cook our own meals and store our food, when we were not in the mood for dining out. In Costa Rica it gets dark around 6pm, so in the evenings we preferred to cool ourselves in the swimming pool, while contemplating the sunset, listening to the birds and the howling monkeys :)

To conclude, I highly recommend El Sueno to anyone. I would gladly choose the same villa if I were to revisit the Guanacaste region.

Paradise Revisited

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Vila El Sueno and will certainly not be our last! Calin and Silvia treat us like family and continue to go above and beyond all expectations. Calin is an excellent host who does everything he can to accommodate your needs. From booking excursions, to recommending restaurants and things to do in Coco, he is a wealth of knowledge. We arrived New Years Eve, and accompanied our hosts to a nearby hotel where we danced the night away under the stars. It was a truly memorable experience. This time around we enjoyed the spacious upstairs apartment with full sized kitchen and stunning balcony views. The bedroom was large, and the bed very comfortable. Totally laid back and unpretentious is the best way to describe our experience here. A quiet place with a great beach, yet a short cab ride (we liked to walk) to the town of Coco for shopping, restaurants and nightlife. The best of both worlds. Thank you Calin and Silvia for everything!

Incredible Vista & Pool; Villa Interior Needs Attention

  • 3 of 5

We have mixed feelings regarding this rental experience. First, the positives: The view from this villa is incredible and the pool was relaxing and refreshing. We rented the second floor apartment w/ 3 bedrooms & 2 baths. It is very spacious with 5 wall air conditioning units. It is a peaceful location where birds and howlering monkeys can be heard.

The kitchen has lovely granite countertops, a coffee maker, microwave and propane stove. There are plenty of plastic dishes and glasses. The cookware, however, is minimal and old. There were 2 dull knives and the dishwasher is broken. The dining room chair cushions are in desperate need of replacement. The wifi worked fine near the pool and in the SW bedroom. It did NOT work in other rooms of the apartment. The villa is currently for sale so perhaps a new owner will make improvements.

Upon our Friday arrival, the owner informed us that one of the AC units was broken and would be repaired on Monday. This was acceptable. However, we soon discovered the AC in the master bedroom was also malfunctioning and had soaked the pillow & bed which were directly underneath the unit. We contacted the owner & helped him flip the mattress, move the bed & the sheets & pillow were replaced. A bucket was placed under the leaky AC unit until repaired. The owner understandably asked us to turn off the AC units when not in the apartment. We honored his request but on one occasion, our son forgot to turn off the unit in his room & the owner chided us for forgetting. He also lectured us that 10 degrees cooler than the outside temperature of 98 degrees should be sufficiently cool. It was clear that every time we left the villa, the owner entered the apartment to ensure the AC units were off. The owner is a friendly, pleasant man but this was a bit awkward. A family wanting more privacy may be bothered by this.

Please know this villa is quite a distance from Playas de Coco where the grocery stores, restaurants and other shops are located. A rental car with high ground clearance is highly recommended due to the incredibly steep driveway and local speed bumps. Yes, Father Roosters restaurant is within walking distance. However, it is quite expensive to dine there on a daily basis due to a mandatory 10% gratuity and 13% service tax.

Overall, the villa was fine but we would try a different villa upon returning to Guanacaste.

Our Version of Shangri La...

  • 5 of 5

El Sueno de Ocotal is our Shangri La, defining it as an idyllic, peaceful, and picturesque hideaway on Playa Ocotal, an easy 3.7 km from the hustle and bustle of exciting Coco, and a 5 minute walk down a natural path to the most exquisite beaches we have ever seen. We stayed in the modestly decorated, yet clean and comfortable one bedroom apartment with king size bed located on the first floor of a beautiful Spanish style villa, with its own wing, and large outdoor dining area which is adjacent to the crystal clear pool we used for cooling off, and swimming lengths.

The kitchen is equipped with a coffee maker, two burner electric cook top with adequate cooking and storage containers, a toaster oven, microwave, refrigerator, dishes and utensils for four. Although basic, it does the job very nicely.

The bathroom is ample with space to store toiletries...we brought our own body wash and shampoo etc. as none are provided, not an issue as we prefer using our own anyway. Dish soap and hand soap are both provided. Upon request Calin and Silvia were more than happy to oblige my request for the use of a hairdryer for the duration of our visit.

We chose to stay at El Sueno de Ocotal because it offered us the opportunity to cook for ourselves, to enjoy the beautiful scenery and natural environment, and allowed us to unwind and get a feel for what it could be like to live in Costa Rica; so far this is our favourite spot! Nothing beats waking up daily to seeing the spectacular blues and turquoise of the Pacific Ocean from one’s bed; it sets you up for your day. It was also an easy and pleasant 45 minute walk to Coco.

We loved getting to know our hosts Calin and Silvia - an absolutely delightful couple. They provided us with the most enriching opportunities to experience the local area, as well as the Guanacaste region as a buying fish from a local fisherman whose location would never be known if not for someone taking you there.

We highly recommend El Sueno de Ocotal; we’re hoping to rent 3 bedroom apartment for 2-3 weeks with my in-laws next year. El Sueno de Ocotal has excellent cost/value, is an easy drive from Liberia Airport, and accessible to many of the other beaches along the coast. If you are interested in experiencing the real day-to-day living in Costa Rica, hands down, stay here; it’s as close to authentic without losing any of the comforts of home.

Pura Vida,

PS. Book directly with Calin:
