About the property

Villa Mjesto, Stari Grad, Hvar Island, Croatia. Restored 4 Room House Overlooking Harbour & Old Town. Short Walk From Beaches

The villa is secluded, but only a few minutes stroll from the buzzing heart of the town, which is wrapped around an inlet in the sea. It is the most beautiful and interesting town on the island, and also the best located for visiting other places on Hvar island. It is a fantastic place for a family holiday, or for a group of friends to go.

The harbour is beautiful and always busy with boat movements. There are traffic free quaysides around it with lots of places to eat and drink.

The house is spacious (c.200 sq. metres) and organised over two floors.

The upper floor has a large kitchen that enters out to a terrace that has a beautiful view over the harbour and the historic old town.

The terrace has a table that seats 10 where most guests spend much of their time. There is also a table that can seat up to 10 in the kitchen.

The upper floor also has a lounge, with TV, two bedrooms with large double beds and a large bathroom with separate bath and walk in shower.

There is a large lounge on the lower floor which has sofas and another dining table. It also has a small kitchenette. This lounge stays cool even on hot days.

There are two large bedrooms downstairs.

One has a large double bed and a child's bed. It has its own entrance from outside and has an en suite bathroom.

The other has two large single rooms. It has its own shower room and toilet.

There are four rooms in total, three with double beds and one with two single beds.

The villa is ideal for groups because the rooms are organised in three sections each of which has external access, with both external and internal staircases to the two floors. Each group can have a high level of privacy, therefore.

The house has been recently refurbished and is attractively furnished.

There is a large orchard in front of the house. The house is in its own grounds, with two parking spaces. There is not much traffic on the road it is on. It is calm and secluded.

Stari Grad, which means "Old Town", is one of the oldest settlements in the Adriatic. It is a World Heritage Site. It has many historic buildings and atmospheric alleys.

There are many places to eat and drink near the house. There is a supermarket, fresh fish market, produce market, and bakers within a short walk.

There is a pleasant beach a few minutes walk away and other nice places to swim within walking distance.

There are walks from the villa through Mediterranean countryside, offering beautiful views. It is ideal for cycling, both around the town and in the countryside. There are way marked walking and cycling trails. There are several places in the town to hire a bicycle.

You can hire cars by the day, including open top VW Beetles. You can alternatively take buses and or taxi buses to places around the island. A variety of memorable day or half day trips can easily be done from the house.

It is also possible to hire boats and, during the season, there is dinghy sailing for children.

There is a kids playground nearby and the town as a whole is a great, safe place for kids to explore and play in.

Stari Grad is easy to get to direct by ferry from Split.

The villa is ideally located for exploring other parts of the island, which is famed for its beauty. It is easy to organise transport, or hire a car.

About David Geddes

The villa is owned by Sue Warren, a New Zealander, and David Geddes, an Englishman. Sue is a tourism consultant who has worked extensively in the Balkans. David is also a management consultant working in the visitor economy, but mainly in the UK. Sue and David periodically go to check that everything is fine at the house, in addition to using it themselves of course for family holidays, but it is looked after day to day by our excellent house manager, Mira. She takes care of our guests while they are at the villa.

David Geddes purchased this house in 2006

Why David Geddes chose Stari Grad

Sue was working in Croatia and fell in love with the country. She spent a lot of time looking for the perfect house and finally found the villa in 2006. David agreed that it was a beautiful proposition and joined her in refurbishing it. The house is mainly furnished with Sue's furniture from New Zealand, including works of art collected on her travels. It has the feeling of being a true home.

What makes this house unique

Perhaps the nicest thing about the villa is its location. The town is exceptionally beautiful and pleasant. It is of an ideal size - not too big, but big enough to be vibrant and have a good range of shops and restaurants. The harbour is its main asset and is always alive with activity. It is very relaxing to stroll around just watching the activity. For kids, there are four ice cream shops to choose from! For adults, numerous places to have a coffee and watch life go by, and always decisions about which restaurant to go to. Going to the supermarket does not require a big trip - it is just a short stroll away. A short walk along the harbour takes you to very pleasant swimming beaches, or out into classic "Mediterranean" countryside, with beautiful pine forests, olive groves, wildflowers and stunning views across the deep blue sea to other islands. It is the best place on the island for taking day trips and half day trips.

Beautiful, Spacious House overlooking Harbour and Atmospheric, Ancient Town
average rating of 4.714286 based on 10 reviews

The house is lovely and the local town which is on your doorstep has lovely places to eat and swim.

  • 5 of 5

The host provided all the relevant information about the property and was helpful prior to departure. On the Island we were well looked after by the recommended taxi driver who took us to a wonderful beach populated by local families, crystal clear water and a friendly beach side cafe. The local rep stepped in when one of our party was ill and needed to see a doctor.

The house is lovely and airy with great views of the local town - a short stroll away. We experienced the good sportsmanship of the Croatians as they lost in the World Cup Final. They were jolly and played music and sang until the early hours. The town has great places to eat and it is really nice just hanging out in the harbour admiring the wonderful boats and the comings and goings.

There are good beaches in the town although are mostly of the platform type rather than a beach to lie on. Still very nice and the sea is glorious. If you want a beach to lie on for the day then you are better investing in a taxi ride through the mountain tunnel.

The house was really spacious and ideal for a family with teenagers who want their own space. We would regroup on the terrace in the evening for cards and to watch the world go by in the harbour.

Would recommend a holiday at this house on this wonderful island.

Great visit to this lovely city and home.

  • 5 of 5

Our whole family stayed in the home for 4 nights. Everything was perfect. The owner arranged the driver to pick us up and drive us back to the ferry. Her niece met us at the house to explain all the details about the house and town. The owner also shared a PDF with very valuable information about restaurants, shopping, sights etc. I would certainly recommend this accommodation!

Perfect house in the perfect place

  • 4 of 5

We were two families with four children, and the house was perfect for all. It is in the town of Stari Grad, so lovely, while keeping some intimacy and space. The only con would be the lack of AC in the fourth bedroom but this is minor. Overall, the house is more beautiful than in the pictures and everyrhing was made to make us feel so at hone.

A little piece of Havaar Heaven

  • 5 of 5

An very spacious, well set out and confortable villa especially suitable for families with older children or groups where some privacy is a bonus. The views from the terrace are just beautiful and a focal point for socialising and eating.

Stari Grad is a lovely little harbour town with all the amenities you need a short stroll away. Good supermarket, fresh fruit market, surgery, chemist, deli, shops, art galleries etc. Restaurants galore at various price points and lovely fresh local food. Other than restaurants, nightlife is limited to a couple of lively bars overlooking the harbour and strolls taken at sunset. Perfect for us aged 16- 50; just enough for those in their 20's but also safe for 16 year olds venturing out too. Those wanting the club atmosphere of Havaar town can get to it easily by car or on the local bus which is easy and convenient to take around the island.

A car is not a necessity here. Local transport, the odd reasonable taxi, cycling and walking are all here and make everything accessible.

We were more than happy to walk a few minutes to the nearest pebbly beaches which are small local coves with clean water. The nearest on the side of the villa had a couple of lovely little restaurants overlooking them, some welcome shade, steady supply of drinks, ice creams and a few sun loungers.

We had a warm and friendly welcome to Stari Grad, were well looked after throughout our stay and left vowing to return! The people of Stari Grad are particularly charming and welcoming to all. David was very good at accommodating our changes to dates made necessary by a family obligation. Also, the welcome notes and villa information is comprehensive and well thought through. The restaurant recommendations were spot on!

A piece of heavenly Havaar!

Stari Grad. Two beaches.
Car: not necessary

The house overlooks the ancient harbour and old town of Stari Grad (also known as Pharos). It is the oldest town in Croatia and the most beautiful town on Hvar island, which is widely recognised to be one of the most beautiful islands in the world. The harbour is a long inlet in the sea, with traffic free quaysides and boats of all sorts lining each side. It is often mirror-like, with buildings and boats reflected in the water. The old town is an atmospheric and traffic free maze of stone built alleys and squares, with interesting churches, restaurants and shops. The star attraction is the house of Petar Hektorović, a 16 Century poet famous in Croatia, the highlight of which is a beautiful fish pond.

About 5 minute walk to pleasant pebble beach in cove. A variety of other beaches and places to swim within reach by foot, cycle and car.

Split Airport. Direct ferry from Split to Stari Grad takes 90 minutes and goes four times a day. Split has an exceptionally historic and interesting old town (a World Heritage Site) which is nice to visit enroute. It is also possible to come/go via Dubrovnik.

Located within historic Stari Grad. 20 minutes' drive to Hvar Town, the capital of the island. Other attractive towns, villages and beaches within easy reach by car, public transport, cycle or foot.

Further Details:

Stari Grad has a good selection of shops, restaurants, bars and a bank. It has a fish market selling local catch. Boats, cycles, and scooters can all be easily hired.
