About the property

Updated 2 BR/1BA House Across The Street From A Pier To Moor Your Boat & Swim.

Our year-round cottage, fondly called The Birdcage, has the following features:

• Syracuse Lake view from house, with 12’ of lake frontage across the street from the house.

• Private pier to moor one boat or personal water craft, and fish. Pier is installed for the summer season, generally May 15th - September 15th.

• Shoreline great for picnics and sunsets. Shallow, sandy water for swimming.

• Open living space with 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath - Completely refurbished in 2016.

• Kitchen with stainless appliances, granite counter tops, & everything you need to cook but the food.

• Bathroom has a tub/shower and double sinks. The bathroom is on the first floor (bath towels provided).

• Both bedrooms are on the second floor (linens provided). Bedroom 1: king bed. Bedroom 2: two twin beds. With advance notice, they can be two rooms with kings or two rooms with twins.

• Wifi and a 40” TV that has a basic cable and a DVD player.

• Front and back porch. Outdoor dining on the rear porch.

• Pets are allowed, with some restrictions, and there is an extra charge.

• No smoking is allowed on the property.

The owners live in another cabin, which is an easy walk three houses down the street. It fronts Bonar Lake, which is a quiet, no-motor lake with great fishing. With prior permission, and at no charge, guests are allowed to access this site for the following activities:

• Row boat for access to Bonar Lake. Oars are provided, however guests must provide their own life jackets.

• Large lawn area for family games (that you provide) and the fire pit for storytelling, laughter and s’mores. Wood is available, but you must provide the material to start the fire.

Please note that if you wish to go to Lake Wawasee by boat, it must fit under the "railroad bridge", which has a low ceiling. We own a 20' Sea Ray, and when the water is high (generally in the spring), our windshield can be very close to hitting the underside of the bridge.

Super clean and modern!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at this super clean and totally updated cottage. Ann was really welcoming and provided an extensive amount of information on the property and the surrounding area. We didn't get a chance to spend any time at the lake because we were busy at the Michiana Pottery Tour in Goshen. But we would love to come back and stay at The Birdcage again and enjoy the lakes and surrounding area. Top notch!!!

5 star rental! Ann gave us helpful information on the area. The house is newly renovated with great furnishings & decor (make sure to view the photos) and spectacular sunsets over Syracuse Lake. The house is equipped with everything you need for a great vacation stay. One of the best VRBOs we have stayed in!

Clean and cozy

We rented over Labor Day weekend for a wedding at the Oakwood. The house was very clean and had everything we needed. Ann was easy to get ahold of and available if needed.

Small on the outside, Big on the inside, GREAT Location

  • 5 of 5

This home is very nice with easy access from town. It's in a nice neighborhood surrounded by homes facing Syracuse Lake. Two big bedrooms upstairs, a full bath with 2 vanities, and a full kitchen and living room downstairs. Easy access from town and off the street. The owners have done a great job with a remodel, most likely in the last year or so. I'd highly recommend it if you're traveling to this area.

Modern, clean cottage, with a convenient location!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at this lake cottage. We were provided with everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. The owners were very accommodating and were extremely helpful when we had a question about the rental or the area. The location is near several lakes and quaint towns. Fishing was good, with the best just off their pier on Syracuse lake! We would recommend this property completely.

OUR PIER (shallow water) or Syracuse Lakside Park
Car: necessary

You can boat, ski, sail, canoe, windsurf, wakeboard, Jet Ski, tube, fish (ice fish in the winter!) and swim in Syracuse Lake. Bring your own vessel and use the public boat launch which is conveniently just over 2 miles away, or you'll find several places nearby where you can rent a pontoon for the day on Lake Wawasee. Other local amenities and attractions include:

• Access to the seven mile long Lake Wawasee through the channel that connects the lakes.

o Please note that if you wish to go to Lake Wawasee by boat, it must fit under the railroad bridge, which has a low ceiling (approx. six feet). We own a 21' Sea Ray, and when the water is high (generally in the spring), our windshield can be very close to hitting the underside of the bridge.

o A favorite stop on Lake Wawasee is the sand bar, where the water is only 3-4 feet deep. With its sandy bottom, shallow water and centralized location, it's the perfect place to take a refreshing swim, float in the sun, have a picnic in your boat, or socialize with other boaters.

• The Birdcage is on the 5 mile Syracuse Lake pedestrian/bike trail, which is part of the larger Syracuse-Wawasee Trail.

• Maxwelton Golf Club (Public), is just a 3 min. drive from The Birdcage

• Just a little over a mile down the street is the Syracuse Lakeside Park beach, picnic area and playground.

• Visit Oakwood Resort by boat or land, for dining, all the Chautauqua-Wawasee arts and entertainment activities, and lakeside or boat-in Sunday morning church services.

• We always enjoy the Saturday morning Artisans and Farmers Market.

• Public and private cruises with dining on the 70 foot SS Lillypad houseboat on Lake Wawasee.

• Free tennis at the high school, a movie theater and a bowling alley. Chubbys, the restaurant at the bowling alley has great "meal deals".

• The 3546 acre state Tri-County Fish & Wildlife Area which offers hunting and fishing opportunities.

• Several local land and water festivals, such as the Tour des Lakes Bike Ride, Kiwanis Mini-Triathlon/Duathlon, Indiana Plein Air Artists – Art Sale, Kids Olympics, and many, many more.

• Free music concerts held in city parks on summer weekends at Lakeside Park and Chataqua-Wawasee.

• Fishing tournaments, with anglers seeking bass, northern pike, bluegill, and more.

• For football lovers, we are only 1 hour from the University Of Notre Dame.

Shopping and restaurants are plentiful in the Kosciusko County area. Local shopping is continually expanding and includes art & crafts, fashions, antiques, specialty groceries, and more. Take a look at Creative Fish Art Gallery, Absolutely Apparel and Gifts, and several antique/resale shops right near the main intersection in the heart of “downtown”.

The well-known Amish areas of Nappanee and Shipshewana are just short drives from Syracuse, and the Villages of Winona and the town of Pierceton (antique stores) are always an easy fun day trip.

There are many local restaurants: We love to boat–in to the Channel Marker for lunch and get fresh fish at Westmain Tavern for dinner. Other favorites include the waterfront Pier & Back Porch at Oakwood Resort, Huntington Bar & Grill (best beer selection), the long established and well known Frog Bar, and the specials at Chubbys.

Pier is available for use during the summer season. Generally May 15th through September 15th.
