About Carole Barrett
We live in South East England and use our Italian home to completely unwind! Our Italian home is furnished to a high quality and we frequently have repeat visitors who are now in on the 'Italian Secret'-Diamante. We usually visit at least 4 to 5 times a year and try now to match up with the lovely festivals of the area. February for Valentines in Old Belvedere, July for the firework festival in Belvedere Marittimo and September for the Pepperincino Festival in Diamante. This just adds to the flavour and authenticity of enjoying free time as the Italians do; plenty of local food and wine always! We find July and August the busiest time with everyone making the most of the beach from early morning and then eating late into the night as the air cools. We hope you create your own memories.

Why Carole Barrett chose Diamante
We chose this coastline because of its natural beauty. Having searched for an overseas property for 2 years we fell in love with Diamante/Belvedere Marittimo in 2 days flat! If you love to explore the opportunities of Italian style at a realistic price my list of 'where to shop' will really appeal to you. The Italian markets are also a delight to explore, we have a planner in the apartment and if you like Italian markets there is one for most days of the week. Shoes, handbags, cheese and chillies, you choose... 1.5 hours from the Scilia Grande ski region if like us you fancy a couple of nights skiing before resting at the apartment. 6th Summer in Italy and it just gets better! We have lots of local information to get your holiday off to a great start. Places to eat, places to visit

Two fantastic weeks for a fantastic price in a peaceful location.
Carole was an excellent host: swift & helpful communications. The apartment is very nice and comfortable.
Due to the location, we had to walk a lot to get to the nearest supermarket (2 miles) – there are no buses nor English speaking taxis so make sure you arrange a car prior to coming, if only for a few days to buy groceries. We tried to hire one from the only car rental in Diamante without success. You will definitely need a car to get big food shops and visit places of interest e.g. Aqua Fans – €78 & a 40 min drive)
The apartment is in a gated complex and has a wonderful view of the sea, from which you can watch the sun set. The neighbourhood is quiet & peaceful. There was plenty of outside furniture, beach chairs & umbrella in the store room which was great.
We were really happy that we could use the towels and there was a huge variety of kitchen implements! Whatever we wanted to cook, we had the right pot, pan or utensil. Bedrooms are large, easily able to accommodate 5 people with lovely, comfortable beds and both with AC which makes sleeping much easier.
The beach is really close (bear in mind the two steep hills plus a busy crossroad). It is worth the walk, with soft golden sand and clear, warm water. It never feels cramped – this despite many sun beds and umbrellas available to rent (2 beds + umbrella = €15 daily). The sea does get deep quickly though – something to watch out for with smaller children.
You may benefit from being able to speak & understand basic Italian as Google Translate will only get you so far – we only found one restaurant with a duel language menu. Our favourite places were The Black Horse in Diamante and Il Rudere – lovely staff and food.
The only real downside for us was the pool. The restaurant charges €20 a day for a family but closes over lunch. We have 3 young children whose idea of a perfect holiday is to have easy access to a pool; the fact that we had to pay daily was a shock. It may sound harsh, but had we known of this we would probably not have chosen to stay. This is perhaps something that needs to be made clearer in the main body of the information provided and not in the “beach access” section. We only discovered this after our children were asked to leave the pool for not having paid – it’s not actually advertised anywhere at the pool venue.
All in all we had a fantastic holiday. Thank you, Carole for allowing us to share your lovely, comfortable home and for making us feel welcome.
Thank you for taking the time to give your comments - I accept your feedback with grace and will ensure the pool charge at Sabbia doro restaurant complex is made clearer - the beach also charges for beds but I think this is quite normal in Europe.
There are a number of beaches which you can use our beach chairs and towels without any cost having a car to explore those areas is very useful - something we would recommend.
This is an unspoilt area of Southern Italy which is full of families the Italians are extremely welcoming.
Thank you for visiting our special little bit of Italy.
Very nice apartment that was ideal for our family - well presented, clean and good facilities
The Apartment was ideal for our family of 4, including 2 teenagers (we could've easily had 5 staying comfortably) and the weather is brilliant - even when it rains its lovely!
It is very well presented and has very good facilities - the beds are very comfortable. It is ideally situated and it's easy to get to local beaches, towns and shops (although a car is essential if you're to get the best out of visiting the area).
The location is stunning - and you can access the beaches and mountains very easily and local restaurants and shops are easy to get to, with no parking issues at all (there are even 2 A&E departments - which we had to use - within 20 minutes of the apartment). The beaches are great and there are many to choose from and the sea is so warm!
The owners gave us very useful information about the area - both paper versions in the apartment and by email. The owners support really well and are easy to get hold of if help is needed. We agreed with their recommendations and ate in the restaurants they said were good.
In summary - the apartment and locality are both wonderful and we would recommend both to anyone. We would definitely return to both and we think its good value for money.
We really appreciate that feedback thank you. It is a great shame you had need of the A&E, however, it is good to hear the directions worked well.
We really hope you come back you really looked after our little part of Italy in just the same way we would.
It is always too hear about how others enjoy the location and indeed the great restaurants there are. Come back and see us soon.
Thank you. Carole
Fantastic base for exploring
A very clean and well equipped apartment that provided an excellent base for exploring. We only wish the pool was more accessible, but would highly recommend a stay! Carole was helpful and very welcoming.
So pleased you enjoyed our little bit of Italy. We love the pool and welcoming facilities at sabbia d'oro although understand it is a walk down the hill. We would welcome you back. Carole
Perfect in every way
What a superb place to spend 2 weeks in the sun! Carole was so helpful, from the welcome bottle of wine to all the nice touches....beach chairs, beach umbrella, every kitchen item you can imagine, BBQ, beach towels etc. We couldn't ask for more. Hot water repaired immediately. Carole is very efficient and answered every query and problem immediately. Local restaurants were superb, 3 within walking distance. Our favorite beach was a small drive away called KevinSara where you could take a packed lunch on their shaded terrace if you paid 12 Euro's for 2 sun beds. Our 2 girls made friends with all the other (Italian) children on that beach and have remained friends with them still. Local supermarkets very close and good value. And that view from the terrace......stunning. Thanks Carole.
The apartment was lovely, clean and tidy. Me, my partner and a couple of friends stayed here for one week and was big enough for all of us, there was plenty of room. It would of been better with a pool nearer the complex but the pool at the restaurant at the bottom of the hill next to the sea was lovely and their food was good and reasonably priced. The area was very quiet which was perfect for what we wanted, as we only wanted a quiet relaxing holiday. Cooked a couple of times and fired up the bbq a few times which was lovely in the evenings on the terrace. Carole was great with sending us things to do and where to eat. We also went to the restaurant Carole recommended in belvedere marittimo with the English speaking waitress, she was really friendly and welcoming, great food.
Amy looked after the apartment as if it was her own and we really appreciate that!
I agree it would be nice to have a pool at the apartment however we are just not set up for that however the pool at sabbia d'oro is first class exactly as Amy describes.
I am pleased they found my notes on places to visit places to eat etc helpful. We will continue to add to these to help other visitors to our little bit of Italy.
Special interest holidays:
The Calabrian coastline is popular for cyclists, stunning views and a wealth of straight roads.
The closest beach of Sabbia D'Oro is just 2 minutes by car at the bottom of the hill. A stunning white sandy beach with a superb beach restaurant with a great reputation. Shaded parking available backs directly onto the beach. Private pool here, beds available 10 Euros. A car helps get the absolute most from all this coast line has to offer, some great little places to visit, eat shop and sample the local lifestyle. Award winning seafood restaurant right on the beach!
Lots of options, fly into Lamezia Terme 1.25 hours to the apartment by car also great rail link. Or, fly into Naples and experience the stunning Amalfi coast-2.5 hours to Diamante drive. Or, fly into Milan/Rome/Naples and inter connecting flights down to Lamezia Terme. Monarch have launched new flights Gatwick to Lamezia Terme direct April to late October. Ryan Air also fly into Lamezia Terme from Stanstead. AlItalia/Easy Jet also offer flights to Lamezia Terme from Heathrow which we find great!
Belvedere Marittimo-3km. Diamante-1km good train links going North and South in both. Scalea-15km. The larger town of Cosenza is 45 minutes away or Amantea is 1 hour away. The beautiful marina of Maratea is 30 minutes drive. Naples, Pompeii and the Amalfi coast approximately is 2.5 hours. Sicily is accessible via 1 hour Ferry from Falerna Marina 15 minutes from Lamezia Airport. Rome is 4 hours by train from Belvedere or Diamante. There is a natural spa close to Paulo well worth a visit.
Both Belvedere and Diamante have an array of small local bars, restaurants and shops, including their own markets. Both have stunning beaches with full facilities. They are also well served by pharmacy and bank facilities. Belvedere market is on Wednesday, Diamante market is on Saturday if you enjoy some local shopping!
We enjoy the St. Valentines Festival in February, the small convent at the top of Old Belvedere holds a special service for couples, it is full of couples of all ages! Such a wonderful time. September is the Chilli Festival, July is the fireworks festival, more festivals than you can list, they seem to celebrate everything in Italy it really is a great local atmosphere.
Local produce is available at various supermarkets in both Diamante and Belvedere. This is a great base to explore from so when planning your holiday consider some of the local places to visit, Amantea and Scalea to name just a couple. Naples is around 3 hours drive north where you can take a drive along the Amalfi Coast and take in other beautiful spots, Sorrento and Ravello for example. Local restaurants specialise in local produce, salad, vegetables and seafood. Some of the best food we have eaten and not over priced. Experience the culture, the wine, the food and the weather a holiday that you will want to repeat. You can find something different, the last holiday we travelled 25 minutes to a natural spa and covered ourselves in the mud before baking in the Sun, what a very different day that was. We also did a boat trip from Prai a Mare which took you into the beautiful 'Grotte' viewing the fish easily through the clear blue waters. If you are more adventurous you can take the pedalo, venture into the caves and do some snorkeling to get an even better view of the fish, exhilarating, exhausting but worth it.
We have now explored much more and happy to share that with you if it helps to get your holiday started.
