Orchard House is located off Hwy 174 in Nevada County just minutes from the iconic downtowns of Grass Valley and Nevada City. We offer a simple yet elegant 1400 sq/ft. house on 1.7 acres at 2800 feet. Enjoy the quiet of the old orchard or explore the many and varied pursuits that abound in our area. Orchard House features a one bedroom loft overlooking a great room framed by steel beams. The oak floor was milled on site from the old “grandfather” that fell in a 2010 blizzard. For additional guests there is a Murphy Bed downstairs. We have one bathroom and a small utility room with washer and dryer. By design the house has no wifi, television, or land line, but the cell service is good and the sunsets sublime.

About Bruce Herring
We have lived in Nevada County since 1988 and have two grown children. We enjoy all this area has to offer and are most pleased to have Orchard House ready to share with you!
Why Bruce Herring chose Grass Valley
In February of ’10 this area was buried in three feet of snow. Hundreds of trees and power poles in Western Nevada County came down - including the “twin” to the Grandfather Black Oak in front of the house. The Civil War era giant smashed into the roof and west side of the 1950s era barn that stood where Orchard House stands today. Over a period of months, the smaller limbs were bucked up, cut into firewood, and hauled away. That fall a crew with a portable mill cut and stacked hundreds of square feet of rough cut 1x6 oak planks. We thought “maybe some day” we might just use them for something. Remnants of that old oak are still piled under the remaining tree. In the summer of ’13 Bruce demoed the remainder of the barn, we retained the services of architect Dave Mann, and the concept of Orchard House took shape. The building went up in 2014 under the able direction of our contractor friends Chuck Morey and Terry Mueck. And yep, those oak planks from the “twin” Grandfather do indeed make up the floor of the Great Room. Much of the rafter material for the front entry way and rear patio structures are original roof rafters from the old barn. The material in the sliding barn doors came from old apple-packing boxes and the loft floor. The “barnwood” exterior siding was purchased thru Hills Flat Lumber, and is actual old barn siding primarily from Oregon. This property was a working apple orchard from the mid forties until 1998. We first came onto it in the late eighties to pick raspberries from John and Dagmar Gundersen. John also ran a wood shop in the old barn. When they sold and left the area in ’98 the orchard fell into neglect, until we bought it in ‘07. We are very proud of Orchard House and all who took part in its creation, and honored to share it with our guests. Bruce and Sally Herring

Quaint and elegant chalet!
We loved our stay at the Orchard house. Very cozy and quaint!
We'll be back!
If this was my home I would not even share it! It is beyond cool!
As advertised! A wonderful, comfortable, serene house.
My wife and I wanted to get away from it all for a night, and this place was perfect. Peaceful, comfortable, and very aesthetically pleasing. It’s a truly well-built and architecturally interesting. The garden area and orchard were lovely - there are houses around, but it still felt very private. The bed was perfectly comfortable, and all the furnishings were top-quality, The kitchen was well-stocked, and we found everything we needed. We appreciated that it was somewhat minimal, while still having everything we needed. I guess it would accommodate 4 people just fine, but I really think that it is more tailored to a couple’s stay. Bruce was helpful and communicative. Great place - will definitely come again.
