Located in the Valley de La See, surrounded by rolling hills, our gite offers a lovely situation for a relaxing holiday in the countryside. Its position makes it an ideal base for exploring the many famous landmarks of the area - Mont St Michel, the Bayeaux Tapestry and WW2 Landing Beaches, the medieval cities of Avranches, Domfront, Fougeres, St Malo and Dinan and also the yachting town of Granville and the famous copper-making town of Villedieu-les-Poeles. If you prefer to stay close to home, you can relax in our spacious and attractive gardens or sunbathe on the private, secluded decking area next to the pool. The area is also very good for cycling (bring your own or we can arrange hire) with mapped circuits, walking trails, bird-spotting too. New for 2014 - Horse-drawn carriage rides around the local countryside. Beautiful gardens to visit along Brittany border. Easy access from3 ports - within 1 hour and a half of the ports of Caen and St Malo, 2 hours from Cherbourg and approximately 1 hour and a half from Rennes and Dinard airports.

Dave and I made the permanent move to France in 2005. We bought our property as an investment and to use for holidays, but after a few years of visiting Normandy, we couldn't bear to leave! We love sitting in the garden in the summer months, having a barbecue and a glass of wine. In the winter, the log fire keeps us nice and snug. We raise lambs in the summer and keep chickens for fresh eggs every day. We have an orchard which will hopefully give us enough apples for cider each year and grow many of the vegetables that we eat. Dave is a keen cook and having fresh produce on the doorstep is a real treat. We do evening meals for visitors once or twice a week.
Helen purchased this Cottage in 2001
Why Helen chose Les Cresnays
As we were looking for a holiday home, we wanted something with easy access to the ports. We lived in Poole, on the South Coast of England and the obvious route for us was Poole/Cherbourg. We also noted the routes of Portsmouth/St Malo and Portsmouth/Caen would be quite easy for us too, and so decided to look in an arc of 2 hours from these ports. We love the seaside, but also wanted something with a lot of outdoor space and our location in the countryside, just inland from the Bay of Mont St Michel, feels like we have the best of both worlds. We can step outside into the beautiful Normandy countryside with its wealth of wildlife and fruit trees, or be at the beach in half an hour.
What makes this Cottage unique
Being on the edge of the village of Cuves, we have the benefit of walking to the Boulangerie in the morning for bread and croissants and to chat to our French neighbours. But we are only a 20 minute drive from the large town of Avranches with its multitude of shops, hypermarkets, bars and restaurants. Also, we have found that we are ideally situated for visiting many of the tourist attractions of Normandy. Mont Saint Michel, the D-Day Landing Beaches, Bayeux Tapestry, the famous copper-making town of Villedieu Les Poeles and the historic port of Saint Malo are all within an easy drive for a lovely day out.

Very good stay with excellent hosts!
A very good location for touring the area with most places being less than an hour away. The accomadation was just right for a couple, and the hosts could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Dave's cooking is not to be missed!. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Andy & Liz
Thank you, that's very kind. Everyone loves Dave's Steak & Ale Pie! So pleased you enjoyed your stay here.
Wonderful hosts, great accommodation, peaceful location.....delicious drizzle!
Beautiful, peaceful location and great accommodation providing all you need for a comfortable, relaxing, self catering break. Pool was an added bonus and Helen and Dave were lovely hosts. Friendly, helpful and informative. We took advantage of the meals they offered - delicious, great value, entertaining company (amazing drizzle). Highly recommend Les Hirondelles to anyone looking to explore this area.
Lovely little gite with very welcoming hosts in a quiet rural Normandy village
We spent a very relaxing five nights in July 2016 in Les Cresnay which is a tiny little hamlet in rural Normandy. The owners, Helen and Dave were very welcoming and we joined them for breakfast most mornings. Helen also kindly provided us with a salad on the first evening.
The gite is nicely furnished and has a beautiful enormous fireplace. It also has Wifi and UK satellite TV, great for watching the Tour de France and catching up with the news. Ideal for a relaxing peaceful vacation.
There is plenty to do nearby with Mont St Michel, the D Day beaches and Grandville all reasonably close.
Negatives ? Not many restaurants nearby, so we tended to eat out at lunchtime.
Thank you both so much for taking the time to write a review - its really appreciated.
We're so pleased you enjoyed your break here.
It's true that restaurants open in the evening are few and far between in Brécey (nearest town) although there are lots to choose from in Avranches which is less than 30 minutes away. Also Le Moulin de Jean, a gastronomique French restaurant, is just a 5 minute drive and visitors always give it a great review.
But this is why we offer meals ourselves twice a week - so you dont have to drive!
Thanks again - we hope to see you another time.
Hope the moon is shining brightly Helen and Dave 😉😉😉
I cannot express enough our gratefully thanks to Helen and Dave for their wonderful hospitality and help with planning our sight seeing adventures. Your local knowledge and advice were invaluable.. The Gite was very comfortable and well equipped for all our needs, and the meals provided by our hosts on the evenings we chose to dine in where fabulous.. Debbie and Colin Bird.
Thanks for taking the trouble to write a review when you got home. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your 2 week stay with us. You mentioned the sight-seeing - you visited so many places but have forgotten to say where! I remember you visited all of the D-Day Landing Beaches, several Military Cemetries, the 360° Cinema at Arromanches, Bayeux Tapestry and Cathedral, Granville, Mont Saint Michel and Alligator Bay , Saint Hilaire market...... and I'm sure I have missed some out! You also discovered some lovely restaurants. You certainly made the most of your time in Normandy but there is still more to see - so we hope to see you again! Helen
First Gite Holiday
Cosy, well equipped Gite with log burning stove. Tastefully decorated and in rural surroundings. Welcoming owners who provide a complimentary breakfast and are very helpful and happy to provide information of the places of interest.
Lovely walks to neighbouring villages. Close to A84 for access to Bayeaux and the Normandy beaches and near to Mont St Michel.
Wonderful break. Enjoyed being able go out and buy the wonderful French produce and cook if we wanted to. We certainly recommend the Gite holiday. Much more comfortable than the confines of a hotel room.
Thank you both very much for your kind words. We are so happy that your first Gite experience was a good one. We are pleased too that you made the most of the opportunity to visit the many beautiful and historic places of interest to be found in our region. We hope to see you again!
Great Gite, lovely owners
We have just come back from 2 weeks at Les Hirondels. We stayed in the Stable which was spacious and comfortable with everything we needed an ultra comfortable bed was much appreciated. We enjoyed our breakfasts with Helen and Dave, also the two Dinners. They are excellent hosts with a lovely home and a good sense of humour.
That's very kind of you both, thank you! Hope we can live up to that! You didnt mention the places you visited but I know that you particularly enjoyed Saint Malo and the Chocolaterie!
The nearest beach at St Jean le Thomas, in the bay of Mont St Michel, is approximately 35 minutes by car. The more commercial resort of Jullouville is 10 minutes further and the port of Granville around 1 hour. On the other side of the peninsula are the D-Day landing beaches between Caen and Bayeaux, approximately 1 hour and a half by car.

Other ports that our guests use are Le Havre - around 2 and a half hours and Calais - 4 and a half to 5 hours.
We are within a very short walk of the boulangerie/bar-brasserie/tabac in Cuves. It is a 5 minute drive to the nearest town of Brecey for supermarkets, etc. The large town of Avranches is a 25 minute drive.
The medieval towns of Fougeres, Domfront, and Dinan are all within an hour's drive. The very attractive port, town and beaches of St Malo, just over the border in Brittany, are an hour away.
Mont St Michel is less than an hour away.
Brecey has all the shops that you would need for basics.
Avranches has a much bigger range of shops and 2 hypermarkets.
Horse riding and tennis is available at Brecey, as is fishing along the banks of the River See. There are lots of marked walking trails in the area (we can provide local maps) and various circuits for cycling. We can also arrange cycle hire. Kayaking and Canoeing are available within an hour's drive.
Nature lovers will enjoy the huge range of birds to be seen from our garden, including buzzards and occasionally an owl, as well as the more usual species.
There is also a Karting circuit about 20 minutes away.
For children, the attractions include Alligator Bay, Champrepus Zoo, Le Village Enchanté (a small theme park for little ones) and L'Ange Michel (a larger Water Park).
Our local restaurant, Le Moulin de Jean, has a very good reputation and is favoured by our previous guests. The Buffalo Grill at Avranches is very good for steak. At Brecey, Le P'tit Nicholas is an eat-in or takeaway pizzeria.
