About Gillian Armitage
Moving to France in 2005, we were not quite sure what to expect. What we found was a relaxed, layed back way of life we wished we had discovered earlier. However, we had to wait until the hard work of renovation was completed. Coming from West Yorkshire where you call a spade a spade, learning to do the same in french is not so straight forward!! But the french are extremely friendly and helpful, and this has made our transition much easier. Gill is the head interior designer, and puts all the ideas forward, while Hugh does as he is told! It seems to work. Hugh & Gill live adjacent to the rental house and on hand to maintain the gardens and pool. They will be pleased to offer advice and suggestions when asked, but otherwise will remain discreet. We like our privacy too! Since moving here, Gill has become very involved in the local pet refuge and works a few mornings each week. Over the years we have fostered and adopted two dogs. We also have a couple cats which just arrived! The dogs are very friendly but will be kept in our own garden during the guests stay. The cats tend to stay clear of the guests & garden & move to the back of the property! Their space!
Gillian Armitage purchased this House in 2004
Why Gillian Armitage chose Fontenay-le-Comte
We bought La Fleur De Lys in Fontenay because of the location for guests. The area offers so much apart from an historic town & wonderful areas to visit, Boats, fishing, biking, aquarium, zoo's, kids activities, plage down the road for kids, picnics, puy de Fou,beaches, goes on & on! This is the wonderful VENDEE to suit everyones needs. Shops, restaurants, bars............ Not busy, just nice & so relaxed & very pretty houses, so French. Just loved the area & new it was perfect for guests on holiday. Just a perfect location for our guests! You will never be bored! Everything within easy reach, La Rochelle, Il de Re, Lucon, all these places to visit. Other islands nearby,L` ile D`Aix etc. The area has access to most places plus has the wonderful charm of Fontenay Le Comte, so so laid back, CHILL

A relaxing break
Plenty of space for us to relax, with a lovely large pool. A short drive or 30 minute walk to the town and shops. Just over an hour to the coast with lots of places to explore.
A wonderful holiday
Superb property which was beautifuly maintained. Hugh and Gill were great hosts and made us very welcome. Overall we had a great holiday here, and would thoroughly recommend Fleur De Lys.
Fleur de lyse
Lovely property. Hosts very helpful. Good size pool and great barn for kids to play in . Property 25 min walk to Town. No Air Con, no tumble dryer to dry stuff and small line outside. Too many cats roaming so couldn’t leave windows or doors open down stsirs. BBQ’s past their best need replacing.
Thanks for your kind comments.
We do not advertise having any air conditioning, which is why we suggest, on hot days, to keep the house closed up. There are 2 bbq’s available, one of which is stone built and shows no wear.
There is a tumble dryer available for use at the owners discretion and for which a charge would be applied. However, I fail to see the necessity for this if the weather is so hot you are missing the air con. The washing, of which there were at least 2 loads per day for a 7 night stay, was drying with the hour when hung out on the lines, but not necessarily when hung over chairs on the patio!
Our guests were very pleasant and no trouble during their stay.
Pet friendly holiday home
The place was clean and well equipped. However there are cats and dogs on-site. The dogs are friendly, but the cats were a nuisance because they kept entering the house. On one occasion they where on the kitchen surfaces and twice found in bedrooms and bathrooms. This meant having to keep the doors and windows closed at all times. Fly screens may have been helpful to resolve this situation. During our stay we did not observe the pool being cleaned even though the tube and brush where hanging in the games room.
Hugh had a tendency to water the plans around the site during our breakfast time (10:30) which made us feel uncomfortable, because we felt this could have been done earlier in the morning before the sun got too high in the sky.
Overall we did enjoy our stay apart from the issues mentioned above, but be prepared to clean the whole house before you leave.
Lovely spacious house with lots to do in the local area.
Hugh and Gillian were very welcoming hosts and we very much enjoyed the time we spent in their lovely house. The kitchen was well-equipped and the house was the perfect size for two families of four. We explored the local areas as well as further afield and there is certainly plenty to do - we could have spent a second week there easily! Hugh did a great job at keeping the pool clean and at a good temperature for us. Although the hosts live in the house next door we found them very discreet and hardly saw them during our week there, yet it was convenient to be able to knock on their door if there was a problem - the best of both worlds. The bedrooms and bathrooms were clean and furnished to a high standard. Thanks for a great week!
Stunning French house full of character. Comfortable and well equipped
Great pool set in well kept large garden! The games room was packed full with plenty of games and things to entertain the kids.Safe and enclosed for children and dogs too.
