About Paul and Mel Flint
We have both lived in the glorious countryside all our lives, and wouldn't swap it for a moment. An active family we love, hill walking, cycling, tennis and sailing. With grown up girls having fled the nest we made the most of a welcome opportunity to travel for 7 months in 2016/17 to South America, New Zealand, Japan, and headed home on the Trans Siberian railway, so the cottage had a respite from guests and we had so many wonderful experiences. One we were keen to continue was the value of good, friendly service, which is paramount. We love taking our Sprocker Spaniel - Rudder out for longs walks and mucking about in the garden and making a home for our guests and family alike. Hampshire has so much to offer and we are eager to share it with our guests.
Paul and Mel Flint purchased this Cottage in 2001
Why Paul and Mel Flint chose Horndean
We bought this glorious rather run down old farm in 2001 and have spent the last few years giving it some well deserved tender loving care and the results are stunning. The area is so accessible to the 3 main cities around us, Chichester, Winchester and Portsmouth and the convenience of hopping to the Isle of Wight or on the train to London makes day trips easy for us and now for guests too. Yet we are in the heart of the country and all that the Southdowns National Park has to offer. Nature, beauty and open spaces. Close to the home of cricket at Broadhalfpenny down, the glorious sight of cricketers playing on a Sunday evening as the sun goes down is a treat not to be missed. If you are into cycling and walking we are brilliantly situated, you can simply walk straight from the door onto paths and cycle too on tracks or lanes. We have various previous owners of Lone Barn return to us to visit, and tell us of how it used to be 'back in the day'. Its so lovely to have some history behind where we live.
What makes this Cottage unique
We fell in love with Lone Barn, due to its unique setting, deep in the valley with just the wildlife as our neighbours. The delightful different periods of the buildings that make up the property just add to its quirkiness and delights that so many love. We moved here when our children were young and just to be able to give them the freedom to explore the countryside and learn about the beautiful nature around us was a real opportunity we couldn't ignore. With a tennis court on site and a lovely large garden to enjoy and surrounded by glorious countryside to walk and cycle in, you hardly need to leave Lone Barn, as you can entertain yourselves easily here.

Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting . Fully equipped kitchen made making meals so easy and the bedrooms were luxurious.
Thanks Lynne for your kind review so glad you enjoyed your stay with us and you found the cottage so luxurious and well equipped.
I hope you enjoy making the Wild Blackberry and Rose cake from the recipe I gave you. It is one of my favourites to leave for our guests arriving in Autumn.
Sounds as though you might trying to emulate the lavender bags too, - good luck with those.
Wonderful relaxing break in a beautiful location
Excellent cottage, extremely well equipped and lovely personal touches like a homemade cake and wine when we arrived!
Set in beautiful countryside close to great pubs, walks and with a lovely large garden. The tennis court was a huge hit with young and old! Thank you to the our friendly, welcoming and helpful hosts Paul and Mel - we would love to return!
The perfect country retreat!
We came for a long weekend to get out of London and we couldn’t have picked a more perfect location. There were 4 of us - my mother, my husband and our 2.5 year old son.
The house is impeccably decorated with gorgeous robes for everyone as well as full sized bath products to use while we were staying - one less thing to pack which is always welcomed!
There were some well loved toys and books available which kept my son entertained each morning and with the use of the wonderful garden spaces, you can run around, play football or just relax in the sunshine.
There are plenty of good pubs and other restaurants in the area as well as some excellent kids activities.
Mel and Paul are perfect hosts and on hand for anything you might need or questions you might have.
We shall be back!
Thank you Hannah for your kind comments, we are so pleased to hear you found the cottage well equipped for your needs and its perfect location so useful for getting out of London. It was a pleasure to see young Jake running around the garden and helping with the watering with Paul, its always a delight to see The Lone Barn being appreciated by all ages. We'd love to have you back one day, so look forward to seeing you again.
A peaceful stay in a stellar property!
The Lone Barn...A peaceful stay in a stellar property!
My family of 4 from the USA stayed at The Lone Barn for 5 nights. The property is exactly as advertised and we were very impressed by the craftsmanship and attention paid to every detail. From a sparkling clean interior (and exterior) to the crisp, luxurious bed linens to the fragrant and high-quality toiletries...our expectations were exceeded at every turn. We appreciated the detailed descriptions of local activities, restaurants and shopping...it is clear that the owners have loads of experience and know exactly how to pamper guests. The location was ideal for visiting The Isle of Wight, Stonehenge, Portsmouth and Chawton. The fresh milk, juice, coffee, delicious lemon cake and curd were so appreciated after many hours of travel. We would definitely stay here again and would recommend The Lone Barn to anyone seeking a peaceful, comfortable get-away.
Wow what a lovely review, so pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay with us so much and that you appreciated all the efforts we put into making the cottage that bit extra special for our visitors. It was great to have you visiting good old UK and I was so impressed by how much you managed to squeeze in whilst you were here. As you mentioned we are so incredibly well located for so many great visitor attractions and perfectly positioned in the South for coast, city and countryside all at once, even a trip to London is easy and only an hour away. We really hope you will return one day to do all those lovely places you didn't manage to get to this time!!
Well appointed comfortable cottage set in quiet countryside
Mel and Paul are welcoming and friendly owners who provide many lovely extras. We enjoyed our stay and would go again.
Thank you Dennis so much for your kind words. You were model guests a real pleasure to have you here. So pleased you enjoyed your stay and were able to spend some time with your brother in our cottage and that they were able to enjoy the delights of Hampshire. We would love to see you return to Lone Barn in the future, we wish you the best for the rest of 2018. Best wishes from us both.
A lovely holiday home
The cottage was wonderful - beautifully furnished and cared for with thoughtful extra touches such as flowers in all of the rooms. Mel was very kind and helpful and her elder flower cake was delicious. Definitely hope to stay there again in the future.
Thank you so much Kathryn for reviewing your stay with us. You were the perfect guests, making use of our home here for a get together with your family. Flowers seem to be coming up trumps in the cutting garden right now, so its great to be able to fill the cottage and our b&b rooms with flowers for our guests. I've gone a bit mad on that cake, its my favourite for summer 2018, might just have to make it again this week for our guests coming in. Really hope you do return one day whether it be for our holiday cottage or our b&b rooms. Thank you once again and best wishes to you both - Paul and Mel
