Villa in Pianello del Lario with private pool and wonderful lake/ mountain view
- english, french, german, italian
We are two English families. We holiday in our villa 3-4 times a year (including as a base from which to ski in the Winter), sometimes with friends or on our own.
Roby purchased this Villa in 2007
Why Roby chose Pianello del Lario
We bought our villa in November 2007 and spent 9 months renovating it. It was originally 2 flats which we knocked through to make 1 villa. The villa has had new fittings throughout, including new bathrooms, kitchen, central heating, furniture and appliances. We put the pool in during winter 2008 and that's proved to be a huge hit with the kids. We have a secure fence and lockable gate around the pool so it's perfectly safe for kids of all ages. We love the area because it is so peaceful and the lake provides so many opportunities for fun for kids. The constant diet of pizza/ pasta also goes down well with them which helps enormously! Often one of the nicest parts of our holiday is sitting on the terrace in the evening, with a glass of prosecco, looking out over the lake and mountains.
What makes this Villa unique
Top 10 things about our villa: 1. Having a private pool. 2. The stunning view of lake and mountains from the pool and terrace. 3. Being in easy walking distance to the lake, nice restaurants, supermarket, bakery for morning bread etc. 4. Having 3 bedrooms and the sofa bed means we can accommodate 2 families quite comfortably. 5. Cosy in the winter and close to ski resorts. 6. Hiring a boat to cruise round the lake and jumping off for refreshing swims. 7. The Italian tolerance - acceptance even - for kids in restaurants and public places in general. 8. Close proximity to 3 cities - Milan, Lugano and Bergamo - for great day trips. 9. Close proximity to 4 airports. 10. Nice breeze from the lake makes the temperature bearable in high Summer.

Wonderful location and beautiful view
Although we have only given this an overall 3 star rating, we had an absolutely superb holiday in Pianello del Lario. We would definitely return to the area but the villa needs a few things improving if we were to stay again. Our arrival was not the best as it cannot be fully found on google maps. It took us about 1 hour 45 minutes to arrive in the area and another 2.5 hours locating the villa in Pianello. This could be easily solved with better directions being sent. The following morning we enjoyed a lovely breakfast on the veranda, however, we were disappointed to find that there was limited crockery and chopping boards. Most of the bowls were chipped and the boards were not even useable. The place had not been cleaned to a high standard. We spent most of the first morning cleaning the villa again ourselves. We didn’t complain about this because we felt that this would have a negative effect of the holiday. Additionally, it was difficult to put all of our clothes away. The boys bedroom with the three beds in it had one set of drawers and no hanging space at all. Our bedroom had drawers and hooks for hanging space but very few hangers. My parents had hanging space but no drawers in their room. My husband had to use the drawers downstairs and wardrobe located in the day room. Before the hanging space could be used though the cupboard had to be fully cleaned because it was fusty and dirty as well as the drawers downstairs. The additional bathroom downstairs needs a fixed shower to make this room more purposeful. Seven of us ended up all showering in the one bathroom when this could again be easily solved. Several spot lights also don’t work around the place. Only one outside light works too. These all sound minor and they are, however, would be worth investing in some of these areas as it could be so easily perfect.
Your literature in the villa really helped us decide where to go in the area and we ate at many of your recommended restaurants. Our favourite was Ca Del Lago in Gravedonna. Whilst we were there, we enjoyed great food both in and out of the villa. The veranda is absolutely stunning. We hired a speedboat, went canyoning, go karting and visited all of the island including Switzerland. All in all a fabulous holiday with a few niggles that could be corrected with not too much money spent. Aircon in the bedrooms may be too much expense but would be well worth it.
May 18 Holiday
very clean and well presented property. Only negatives were that despite our combined efforts we could not get the shower attachment over the bath to work. Roby was to ask the cleaning team about it but as she did not get back to us I suspect it does not function. This was ok as we were a group of 4 with a baby so all sharing one shower room was not a hardship, a larger group might find it more of a problem.
The village was very quiet and peaceful, if you discount cockerals and barking dogs ! .
Village bakers wares were almost too good.
Excellent base for a quiet break with a bit of touring.
Great place for 5 adults and a baby
Spacious and clean with lots of board games etc for when the weather wasn't kind. The beer waiting for us in the fridge was a nice touch and much appreciated after a long trip.
A Family Week Away
My sister, our children and elderly mother spent a wonderful week at the Villa in early July. The Accomodation provides comfortable sleeping for up to 9 people, but worked brilliantly for our mixed group. We all had our own room and the children were very happy in the bunk room. The house is beautifully appointed with eveything you could need for a relaxing stay, inside and out. The children adored spending hours playing in the small pool, while we sunbathed, or sat under the shade of the pergola admiring the stunning views. The property is well located a short ten min walk from the lake side, and local shops for supplies. There is easy parking close to the house. Pianello is not a touristy town, which we felt was an advantage as it was quiet, and all the jewels of Lake Como were easily reached on lovely boat trips anyway! Lake Como and all the lakeside towns are outstandingly beautiful, so it's a wonderful part of the world to visit. Our particular favourite was Varenna, but there were several others we never even made it to, lots on offer so you won't get bored. All in all a lovely place to holiday and a very nice accomodation.
Dear Mrs Helena,
thanks for your review, We are happy you enjoyed at the villa and on our beautiful lake Como.
Thanks a lot and regards
Such a Great Location and Amazing Views
We came here for a family holiday (2 adults and two teenage girls) at the end of June. We have travelled to many places but I can say with total honesty that I have never woken up to views quite like those when we pulled across the curtains to see the shimmering lake with the Dolomites and the lakeside towns and villages on the other side.
It was also a great location from which to explore all that the lake had to offer. The lake shore is just a couple of hundred metres down the hill. We really regretted that it was only towards the end of our stay that we found the possibility of hiring the motorised dinghies as a way of exploring up and down the lake but would recommend it highly.
In the village of Pianello, the food options are a bit limited but just a short walk down the lake there is a place called Laguna Beach that has deliciously fresh seafood and other options in an incredible lakeside ambience.
There is so much to do in this area that I won’t be able to it justice here. If you are interested in watersports (e.g.snorkeling, surfing, kayaking), you will not find a better place anywhere. The towns and villages around Como are so great to visit. Bellagio at the nose of the promontory is probably the best of all and you can get a quick ferry over from Cadenabbia. Menaggio just a few kilometres down the lake is also a beautiful town (with some great restaurants – sorry I can’t remember names) with a great golf course overlooking the lake if that is what you want. Dongo (just a few kilometres to the north) was the place where Mussolini was captured in 1945 and has a very interesting museum dedicated to WW2.
It was so great to come back to the house every evening and relax in the pool. We also had breakfast every morning on the terrace every morning with those fantastic views. As I’m writing, I just wish we were back and am jealous of whoever is lucky enough to be there now.
My girlfriend and I stayed in April, the villa is beautiful, bright, modern, clean and a home from home with everything you'd need for a long stay. The views from the living room / kitchen and terrace are breathtaking and we loved waking up and having breakfast watching the sun come up over the mountains and lake. There's a friendly bakery, supermarket and a few restaurants a short walk away so all very handy, the wifi was a bonus as well! I'd have no doubt recommending the villa and the area for a relaxing holiday.
5 minutes walk from Lake Como - Pianello has a pretty promenade with an easily accessible shore for swimming, windsurfing and fishing. Boat rental and mooring is available from Pianello's small marina. There are 3 restaurants within walking distance, including the delightful Veranda Beach Bar.
By car: Milan Malpensa Airport 1.5 hrs, Milan Linate Airport 1.5 hrs, Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport 1.5 hrs, Lugano Agno Airport 45 mins.
Ferry and boat pier in Pianello and Dongo (5 mins drive).
Bus stop 3 mins walk from the house, regular bus service up and down the lakeside from Como.
Train stations (with services to Milan) in Colico, Lecco and Como town. The nearest is Colico (20 mins by car).
A car is recommended although not essential.
There are lakeside restaurants and bars in Pianello within easy walking distance, as well as a supermarket, post office, bank, bakery and a children's playground. The popular lakeside destinations of Menaggio (10-15 mins by car), Tremezzo and Gravedona are all easily reached from the villa. Bellagio and Varenna are reached by a short, scenic ferry journey from Menaggio. There is a regular car ferry between Menaggio and Varenna.
The lake is safe for swimming and is ideal for windsurfing, sailing, boat hire and canoeing, equipment for all of which can be rented nearby. Walking, cycling and fishing are all popular in the area, and there is an excellent golf course in Menaggio. There are three open air swimming pools within 20 minutes drive, and a number of playgrounds. The nearby towns of Dongo, Gravedona and Menaggio also offer a great choice of restaurants, cafes and ice cream parlours. Fine dining is available in many restaurants and hotels around the lake. For more relaxed eating, there are many agriturismos in the area offering traditional Italian food and hospitality, some with children's play areas. Milan with its world class shops, Duomo and museums is easily accessible by train from Como Station or by car (1.5 hours drive). Lugano, Switzerland is a scenic 45 minutes away by car and has many shops and tourist facilities including a zoo and "Mini Switzerland".
