About Helen and Carl

Helen and Carl lived in South Devon for many years before moving to Brittany in 2012. We have worked together in the Tourist Industry for many years and we love welcoming guests and sharing this beautiful place with them.

We are both musicians and enjoy taking part in local events and festivals. Our love of music has been very helpful in our integration with the local communities.

Helen and Carl purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Helen and Carl chose Saint-Mayeux

We fell in love with this beautiful Breton Longere at first sight. We have been visiting Brittany for many years - often 2 or 3 times a year. We moved here in April 2012 and we now live here in beautiful Brittany full time.

The 200 year old farmhouse with stone longere set in 2/3 acre of beautiful gardens simply entranced us. It is just 10 minutes walk from the pretty little Breton village of St Mayeux, yet there is virtually no passing traffic and most days the only sounds are the birds and bees.

Perhaps the most beautiful feature is the attractive enclosed garden. The rural location is so peaceful and at night-time we have no light pollution so the stars are wonderful to see.

Situated in the centre of Brittany we are ideally placed for visiting the many splendours of this wonderful region of France. The stunning Lac de Guerledan is just 10 minutes away for sailing, cycling and walking or just relaxing on one of the three sandy beaches.

What makes this cottage unique

Rural, peaceful location with stunning countryside views.

Spacious and comfortable accommodation, fully equipped to a high standard.

The wonderful garden is a joy to relax in. It is a mature garden with many trees and shrubs. There is a sunny terrace and plenty of trees to sit in the shade of whilst enjoying a glass of wine or beer.

Plenty of tables and chairs provide the perfect setting for eating al fresco in the long summer evenings.

Tranquil setting

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in August with our toddler daughter. The gite was very clean and spacious with even a dishwasher which was welcome as who wants to wash up on holiday? Carl and Helen were away when we stayed but we were very well looked after by Kevin and Lisa who were a lovely friendly couple. The gardens were great for our little one (3.5) to run around in while we sat at the table outside and watched. Le Boterff is out of the way in a very quiet setting but close enough to places of interest such as Carnac and Josselin. We would definitely stay again if we visited the area.

Comfortable,spacious and well equipped.

  • 5 of 5

We needed a base from which to follow stages of the Tour de France and Le Boterff ticked all boxes. The gite was spacious, comfortable and well equipped( the chilled cider ,made by the owners, in the fridge was a welcoming touch and quickly drunk)Carl,Helen,Kevin and Lisa were warm and helpful and we felt very much at home. The Breton setting was beautiful and the property and its facilities ensured an excellent stay.No hesitation in recommending this location.

Friendly and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

This is our second visit to Le Boterff, which tells you that we are satisfied customers. Last year we stayed bed-and-breakfast, in the main farmhouse, but, having acquainted ourselves with the area, this time we decided to opt for a gite. We found the beamed barn conversion clean, spacious, and well equipped – a real home from home! It was a lovely surprise to find milk, and a cake waiting for us, along with tea and coffee. (Apparently, these are included, for anyone staying for over three nights) Although there were only two of us, it was clear that, even at its full capacity , there would be plenty of room for everyone. The wooden staircase is possibly a little steep for someone with serious mobility problems, but gave us (fifty-something and not athletic!) no problems at all. There is a radio/CD player, and, if your French is not great, the TV has the main British freeview channels. The free wifi worked well, on my mobile phone. The British owners, Carl, Helen, Kevin and Lisa are marvellous hosts, and, even though there is a small charge, we would suggest that you breakfast, at the farmhouse, at least once, as these guys are a friendly, invaluable source of local knowledge. A short walk from the sleepy town of Saint Mayeux, in the depths of the unspoilt Breton countryside (Deer can sometimes be seen roaming in the adjacent fields), Le Boterff is well placed to drive to either the north or south coast, as well as lovely towns like Dinan and Josselin. It’s so tranquil, though, you might find yourself not wanting to venture far. We’ll be back!

We always try to do all we can to help guests to make the most of their visit to this very beautiful part of France. There is so much to see and do there never seems to be enough time to fit it into one visit! We certainly hope to welcome back in the future.
