Our mountain hideaway is located on the shoulder of Satulah Mt., approximately 2.5 miles from town. It is the quintessential old Highlands chalet, but we have spent many years renovating and updating our house and feel it has all the amenities for a comfortable and relaxing time in these beautiful mountains. We are at the end of a well maintained gravel road, and have surrounded our house with many walkways and beautiful Dahlia gardens. They bloom all summer and late into fall. We have a large deck on the front of the house that is great for relaxing, entertaining or just sitting and enjoying the beautiful view of Rabun Bald and surrounding mountains. On the side of the house we have an enclosed screen porch that also looks out to the mountains. Its a good place for early morning coffee and breakfast. We have two bedrooms downstairs each with a queen bed and a full bath that we have just renovated. There is also a half bath off the hallway that leads to the screened porch. There is an enclosed laundry area with washing machine new clothes dryer that we keep stocked with needed laundry supplies. A small pantry with a small deep freezer is also located in the same hall. .Upstairs there is a large loft area that has a full size bed and a twin bed available. There is also a third enclosed bedroom with a full size bed. There is another full bath upstairs that has recently been renovated. We have another small deck to sit out on and look out at the mountains. We have a fully equipped and stocked kitchen with plenty of supplies for cooking. you won't run out of sugar, salt, condiments, spices, etc. We want out guests to relax and not worry about the small things.
Upstairs- The upstairs loft has a full size bed a twin bed and another enclosed bedroom with a full size bed. We have an air conditioning unit in the downstairs and one up stairs in the loft area. All of the bedrooms have ceiling fans in them.
Technology- A large TV is in the living area and we have a DVD player to play movies, and Direct TV works well up here. We have a land line phone available with long distance if needed, although most of the cell phones are working up in the mountains as they are putting up more towers. We have good high speed internet service through Frontier and WiFi is available at the house. However, living back in the mountains also can come with infrequent internet outages or low cell service if the weather is severe.
Part of the yard is fenced below the deck for our two dogs. We are dog friendly and pets are allowed. Please just notify owner BEFORE booking.
Any other questions you might have please feel free to call or e-mail us. We want our guests
to have a great time and really enjoy our home and the mountains- just like we have been doing for 40 years!!

About Gerry Morgan
We live in the deep south and needed a get away to a different climate. We love the mountains and the outdoors, as do our children and now our grandchildren. The picture is of some of them down at the waterfall a few minutes from our house. We travel some every year, but have never found any place we love as much as Highlands and our mountain home. We have always had a love of gardening, and the wonderful mountain climate lets us grow all the great plants like Peonies, Lilacs, Iris, Dahlias ,lilies of the valley, and other perennials that I grew up with living in the midwest as a child.I am also an avid bird-watcher and get to make great birding trips around the area. It is a great place to be during spring and fall migration. We also love finding new places to go and explore up here in the mountains. They seem endless! If you get tired of the outdoors though, Highlands has some of the best restaurants, shops, galleries, that you can find almost anywhere in the country.
Gerry Morgan purchased this Chalet in 1974
Why Gerry Morgan chose Highlands
When we drove down the gravel road, Old Orchard, through what many years ago had been a working apple orchard, we knew we had found our place. . We have had our home here over 40 years and can't imagine being anywhere else. There is so much natural beauty up here in these mountains. The people are so warm and friendly, and you can't beat the climate . Winters are relatively moderate, spring is breathtaking, sometimes it even rivals the fall color. and summer is a lot better than the deep south where we live permanently.
What makes this Chalet unique
I grew up with the seasons and have always missed them living on the coast. In the mountains, spring is wonderful. I have lilacs and peonies blooming and there are always many birds within view of the porch. In the summer, the Dahlias are gorgeous, not to mention the mountain laurel and rhododendron. And fall colors here are almost like New England. The weather usually does not get too cold until late November (flowers will still be blooming!) We sometimes visit in the winter to see the snow, but we do not plan on renting the house then due to the steps it takes to 'winterize' the house. How can you beat a cozy house tucked up against a mountain, next to the national forest, and top it with a beautiful year round view. Its a recipe for happiness and contentment.

Wonderful mountain holiday week
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay the week of New Years. The owners were very attentive as it was unusually cold that week and they called and checked on us often to see if there was anything we needed. The house is lovely and much roomier than pictured especially the loft upstairs with 3 beds and a sitting area. We have two college freshmen and their ability to go upstairs and watch tv and use the WI Fi/Internet was a great escape for them. The kitchen had everything I needed with a great stove and many spices and condiments. The heat worked great and there is also a fire place. There is a great extra sun room off the side which I wish I could have used more. It is also quite pet friendly as the entire yard is fenced and there is a doggie door to / from the sunroom. The best part of course was the view, that's what we came for and we were not disappointed, the sunsets were amazing and we grilled often on the deck. We enjoyed the easy access road and location to Highlands. Highly recommend and will be back in the Summer !
Very nice, look forward to return visits
All was as advertised, Very cozy, quaint and great view. Flowers were beautiful. Saw large black bear. Short ride into Highlands. Will plan to visit again soon.
If you're looking for a mountain retreat away from the hustle-bustle of city life with all of the conveniences of home, this charming mountain chalet is for you. There are four bedrooms with an additional single bed in one of the bedrooms. Two bedrooms are upstairs (with the additional single bed) and two bedrooms downstairs. There's even a second sitting area on the second floor, which is ideal for families with children. The cottage is rustic but has all of the necessities plus some unexpected welcome surprises. There's a gas grill, fully equipped kitchen with all of the condiments, and plenty of books for those who want to know more about the birds and vegetation. The best part of all is the breathtaking mountain view from the very large deck. If it should rain, there's even a screened porch so that you don't miss out on any of that wonderful outdoor time. As Floridians, we marveled over the hummingbirds that came to feed every day -- that's something we don't see at home!! The owners were so gracious and accommodating, calling to check and see if there was anything we needed not once, but several times during our six-day stay. How rare is that? Internet access was good, but occasionally was out. There is a router in the home. Cell service was best from the deck. This was just the relaxing retreat we needed. We will definitely book next year!!!!!
This is an ultimate experience that gives you both, the convenience of being minutes away from the center of Highlands and a feeling of being as remote as you'd like to be in the mountains. In addition, you are surrounded by gorgeous views from a terrace of the house and welcoming neighbors. We stayed with three children of different ages (from 2 to 16), and the house was flexible to welcome them all. There is also a beautiful waterfall just minutes walking distance from the house.
Gerry is extremely responsive and very accommodating. Thanks to her hospitality, we even extended our stay for one more day — it was hard to leave her house. We are definitely coming back.
A Lovely Christmas Vacation in the Mountains
The mountain view was absolutely gorgeous, and we enjoyed many morning cups of coffee on the porch to take it all in. The cabin was tastefully decorated and had everything we needed in order to cook. I even found a sprig of Rosemary in the garden for my Christmas turkey! We also loved being able to take our well-mannered dog with us. The fenced-in area below the porch was great fun for her. On the very cold days, we still had beautiful views through the large, picture windows in the kitchen and living room, as well as from upstairs. There was plenty of room for all five of us to relax. The heaters in the home worked well, and we also enjoyed the fireplace. We had no internet while we were there, but this was a good thing for us. The phone was all we needed. Quaint, downtown Highlands is very close by, and the coffee shop provided wireless internet for when we needed to take care of business matters. There are lots of fun stores to browse, and I recommend Wild Thyme restaurant for lunch. I look forward to visiting this cabin again in the spring or summer, when the owner's terraced gardens will be in bloom, when we can make better use of the bonus screen-porch room, and when our hikes will be warmer. Oh, and the owner's downstairs bathroom expansion will likely be done by then, too. This property is a gem.
Julie and family, thank you so much for your special review. So glad you had such a good time. we love to share our favorite place with other people. We are so blessed to have this wonderful retreat in our beautiful mountains. You are welcome back anytime, and I will get with Frontier and get my WiFi going again this year! Gerry
Wonderful place to enjoy all the Highlands has to offer!
We four, dear friends who travel annually together enjoyed Gerry's home. It was nice having four different bedrooms and three bathrooms! We loved the deck, the screened sunroom and the gorgeous flowers blooming on the property. The view from the deck of the mountains was beautiful and we enjoyed eating meals outside. We saw humming birds and many wild birds feeding right off the deck!
We loved the close two miles to town as we enjoyed the Highlands Playhouse, playing trivia at the Ugly Dog Pub, the Bascom Art Center, the Biological Station, The Nature Center, viewing many waterfalls, the shopping on Main Street, dining at : Wild Thyme, Wolfgang's and the Market Grocery Cafe!
Gerry's home is very cozy and would accommodate families or friends easily. The weather in the low 70's was heavenly! The nature opportunities near the Highlands are priceless. Relax and renew in this quiet spot.
Debbie Stroman and the Librarians
I'm so glad all the library ladies had such a good time. You listed all the things that we love about our Highlands home, and why we have been coming here for over 40 years. We just haven't found another place that compares to these beautiful mountains. Hope you will visit us again Gerry
There are many hiking trails in the area, rock climbing, rivers for rafting, swimming or just having a picnic. The restaurants are great, as is the library and the Bascom museum. There is a great hiking shop where you can get any and all kinds of equipment and directions to the many hiking trails and areas in the near vicinity. There are so many beautiful waterfalls in the area, including one within walking distance from our house. Cliffside lake and park is always a great place for picnics, swimming for kids, and many hiking trails. There are so many activities available around Highlands that even after almost 40 years of having a home there we still find something new to do each year.
