Holiday Accommodation in Lower Eype, Nr. Bridport, Dorset, England - Idyllic Rural Retreat, Just 10 Mins Walk From Stunning Jurassic Coast
About Victoria Ashford
Merv and Vicky are a married couple with two children. They have been renting the Barn for over twelve years, since moving to Bridport in 1995. They also run a bar/restaurant in Bridport called Beach and Barnicott.
Victoria Ashford purchased this Barn in 1995
Why Victoria Ashford chose Symondsbury
The barn was bought in 1995 after stopping in Bridport by chance, on route to somewhere else. Merv was drawn to the barn as it was a derelict building on an unused farm and just a stones throw to the sea. The barn required extensive renovation to make it habitable and took over two years to complete. It is in a wonderful location, being in a small, very unspoilt hamlet close to a beautiful stretch of coastline. The area is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has gained World Heritage Status. It is a super location for enjoying the countryside, wildlife and nature. It is also a highly creative place with a large number of local artists and crafts people. It is also well catered for, for food lovers, with a number of highly rated restaurants and gastro pubs.
What makes this Barn unique
The property benefits from being very spacious and roomy. Being open plan it is ideal for groups and families wishing to enjoy sharing time together. It also provides the opportunity to retreat from others and enjoy the general ambiance of the area. It is in a quiet rural location, but benefits a number of local facilities within walking distance. With large open fires and rambling garden it is an ideal location for both winter retreat and summer frolics. The huge exposed oak beams, large planked wooden floors and great expanse of glass makes it a unique, bright, inspiring environment.

Fabulous house for family get together
We stayed at this house with 10 members of our families following our wedding. We had great fun and enjoyed the space, lovely garden and were provided with wood to light the fire in the evening. Some of us did some walking along the coast path and we all enjoyed the village and local pub. Stunning house! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their stay.
Lovely Big Barn, needs a little more TLC
A lovely big barn, with loads of space for our extended family of 6 adults and 3 small children. Most bedrooms were of a good size but the two loft rooms are a bit cramped and can only really be used as kids bedrooms, with no storage space. Very nice formal dining area with loads of light from huge windows and two lovely lounges with fireplaces. Great garden with different levels and a beautiful view from the top.
The only downside would be that in our opinion it could do with a bit more cleaning and TLC. It was a bit dusty - particularly the rugs and when we moved one of the beds to fit a cot into the room, there was a lot of dirt under it which had not been hoovered.
In the kitchen we found the dishwasher was not cleaning the dishes properly as it had run out of salt and rinse aid which we then bought and topped up ourselves which we should not have had to do. Also the kettle was full of limescale which did not make a great cup of tea. Ensuring these things are kept on top of are not difficult and would make for a better guest experience.
Overall we had a lovely stay and I would recommend the barn to others but it just needs a bit more attention paid to it in between guest visits.
Fabulous property in super coastal location
The Barn was the perfect place to spend a few days by the sea. It felt like a real home, not just a holiday rental. There were fresh flowers throughout the house, plenty of places to sit and relax and a fantastic garden. The space was more than big enough to accommodate 10 adults and we never felt on top of one another. Everything we needed was there and we really felt at home the whole weekend. I would definitely come back again!
Excellent barn with great facilities, lots of space and a lovely garden. Would recommend.
The Barn was in a lovely location, walking distance to the beach, coastal path and local pub. Inside it was very spacious and ideal for our multi-generation family gathering, I would also recommend it for friends and family groups. The garden was lovely and the different areas meant that the children could play safely whilst the older generations could read, absolutely ideal. We had a lovely time, thank you, I have already been recommending the Barn to friends.
Fabulous barn, and location
We had a great weekend break for 13 adults. Plenty of room, very spacious accommodation, and great for eating and entertaining. Lovely area, with beach and coastal walks.
