About Cath Tinston
My husband and I and our family decided to buy in Italy in 2002 having fallen in love with the country. We particularly love the great food, wine, walks and historic towns. We are based in Cheshire, England for most of the year but spend our holidays in Italy with the family. The house has the advantage that as grandchildren have appeared we as a large extended family can holiday together .The children adore the pool and garden . We can holiday with friends - make pizzas together in the outdoor kitchen .We have invited cooks from the local cookery school in Cortona for cookery lessons and toured the vineyards together with a choice of superb restaurants and beautiful towns and cities to visit . We believe we have it all ! and hope you can enjoy this taste of Italian life too!
Cath Tinston purchased this House in 2003
Why Cath Tinston chose Cortona
The house is situated in the mountains outside Cortona providing a peaceful holiday location. The property is ideally situated for accessing major cities such as Florence, Sienna, Arezzo and Perugia. Lake Trasimeno with it's watersports and beach area is fantastic for children. Montepulciano with it's vineyards is also close by and the ancient city of Cortona is easily accessible. The food in the area is fantastic as is the wine, and is great value! We feel that Teverina is ideally situated for so many different activities and provides the best of both worlds whether you want peace and quiet or sightseeing in major cities. We have always loved Tuscany and the peace and tranquility of living in the mountains above the beautiful town of Cortona .We had holidayed for many years in Italy before buying the house and Cortona and the surrounding villages has everything to realise our romantic view of Italy .
What makes this House unique
The property is one of a small group of 5 houses in a peaceful location with beautiful mountain views and walks on the doorstep. There is a restaurant in the village and the shop is only a few hundred yards away for basic provisions. Other restaurants are accessible by car within a few minutes. The property is 20km (about a 25 min drive) from Cortona and 8.5km (about a 10 minute drive) from San Leo Bastia in Umbria. The house itself has been recently renovated and all of the bedrooms are ensuite. The kitchen, also recently fitted, is very well equipped. There is an open fire in the lounge as well as central heating for use in winter. Outside there is a very large garden with a 12x6m pool. The outdoor kitchen with barbeque, sink and pizza oven is great for summer evenings in.

Rustic & Rural Escape, 20 minutes of winding roads to Cortona. Very pleasant and enjoyable stay
House with 4 bedrooms all ensuite, but some areas look a bit tired. Lovely pool and very quiet location. Car essential. Not suitable for people with mobility issues.
A haven of tranquility in the Tuscan hills
Seven of us had a marvelous fortnight centered on Casa Valentino and Cortona. The property is secluded and consequently very peaceful offering fantastic hill walks with spectacular views of the wooded mountains of South Tuscany. The wildlife was also a significant feature that we all appreciated; wild-boar, deer, hares, badgers, pine martens were among the frequent sightings.
The property itself is well appointed for up to eight people with all the spacious bedrooms benefiting from en-suite shower facilities. Out-doors the pool is of a good size and the relatively extensive terraced gardens provide for entertainment (a proper croquet set is in the shed and provided hours of entertainment) and socialising (particularly at the large communal table under vine-covered pergola). A further highlight for us was the outdoor pizza and bread oven that got extensive use.
The only potential niggle is the kitchen which is central to the house and will happily sit eight for supper at a splendid table but is a bit dark and not particularly well laid out, ergonomically, for large-scale food prep/cooking and the corner cupboard, in which the pans are stored, is susceptible to a bit of damp and can become musty. That said the owners provide a super guide to the eateries in the area which are, in Tuscan style, reasonably priced with simple, good-quality ingredients, freshly prepared.
The handbook provided by the owners is comprehensive and helpful as is the 'goody pack' awaiting your arrival - very welcome if you're arriving late of an evening. So too is the service, Cath (the owner) before, during and after our stay was attentive, prompt and helpful (e.g. gas canister changed within the hour on a mid-week evening when the cooker conked out).
Outings in any direction will, as soon as you get out of the hills, reveal numerous delights. Cortona is historically interesting as the long time home of St. Francis (Assissi is within an easy hours drive East and well worth a visit) as well as laying claim to be the 'Mother of Rome' Montepulciano and Sienna (home of the famous horse races) are easy drives to the North and Castille Del Lago (on the Western shore of Lake Tressimino) lies twenty miles or so to the South.
All in all a lovely and very reasonably priced villa in some outstandingly beautiful and peaceful surroundings. If you want to 'get away from it all' but still have the latitude for interesting days out Casa Valentino and its owner come highly recommended.
Five of us had a week of beautiful weather here in August 2014. We were late arriving and very hungry and so were very thankful for the " food starter pack' of wine, bread, cheese, cold meats and vegetables that had been left for us by the caretaker. The house is really lovely and in an idyllic setting. Even though we were quite high up the midday temperatures often approached 30 degrees and so we were very glad to be able to jump into swimming pool to cool off. The local scenery is stunning with some very pretty walks. The beautiful town of Cortona is about half an hour away where there are some great restaurants serving wonderful local food. There are also some really good eating houses serving traditional Italian dishes in neighbouring villages if you don't want to drive too far. The only downside was that we could have done with at least another week!!
Really nice holiday at Casa Valentino
We had a really nice holiday at Casa Valentino during the summer of 2014. This is a lovely roomy house which is very well appointed throughout, there is also lots of space in the various outside areas and a very nice big refreshing pool. It is located in a very peaceful rural area. The house Ideal for lazing about around the pool there are also plenty of good books, games as well a TV and DVDs. It is very well situated for outings to local towns or further afield to Florence, Perugia, Siena and Arezzo. There are some excellent small restaurants offering reasonably priced and good local food which we really enjoyed. We had good service from the local agent and issues were immediately attended too.
Thank you Kai for your lovely review I am so pleased you enjoyed our Italian home
