'Casita del Mar', as its name suggests is a 'cottage by the sea', situated at the bottom of infamous hilly Mallams and has a four star 'enjoyEngland' grading. The property was built around 150 years ago and has recently been refurbished in a mix of contemporary and vintage style to suit all tastes and always with comfort a priority. There is a courtyard for alfresco dining in summer and wood burning stove in winter. Step outside the front door, look left and you will be greeted with stunning views of the sea. A five minute walk down the hill will bring you to the village of Chiswell, stunning rocky coves and the pebbles of Chesil beach. Have a drink outside the famous 'Cove Inn' and watch the sun go down or a short walk in the opposite direction and have a fish supper (fresh fish caught daily from local fishermen). Casita del mar now has Wifi!

I live in Weymouth and became the owner of this Portland stone fisherman's cottage in 2006. In the summer of 2009 it undertook a complete refurbishment and has now been transformed into 'Casita del mar' with it's fusion of vintage and contemporary style to appeal to all tastes! Having garden design and interior design in my background I have recently been the owner of a Vintage clothes shop (this will shortly be turned into an online vintage clothes and interiors website). I have three daughters and two grandchildren!
Susan purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Susan chose Portland
I live in Weymouth (7 miles from Portland) and when the opportunity came up for me to acquire another property I looked first in Weymouth but was uninspired. When it came to looking on Portland I fell in love with the charm of the fisherman's cottages and in 2009 I began the transformation of 49 Mallams into 'Casita del mar' a holiday home. Throughout this transformation I had, what I would want, in mind. I wanted 'Casita del mar' to have a homely feel, a place I would like to spend time in. Portland is very rustic and somewhat remote from the hustle and bustle of Weymouth, the nearest town. I love the quirkiness of the property and that I can stand outside the front door, look left and see the ever changing look and colour of the sea.
What makes this Cottage unique
'Casita del mar' is full of charm, vintage touches everywhere mixed with the contemporary and with comfort a priority. Winter or summer there is a 'Casita del mar' Portland experience for everyone. Hot summer days and alfresco dining - stormy seas and a log burning stove in winter. There is some parking in the road and a free carpark a three minute walk away. It is well served with bus routes to Portland Bill and Weymouth and a local taxi service. Please be aware not to park in front of other people's driveways. They are not happy when this happens as they are not able to get their cars out. They contact me immediatly! There is a reminder note to this effect in the cottage also. You can bring your pet, £15 extra per pet. It is vitally important they do not go upstairs. Please use the stair gate provided. Thank you.
A great final summer break at the extraordinary Isle of Portland in the beautiful Dorset!
We've spent eight memorable days in a lovely cosy cottage in an unexpected beautiful place like the Isle of Portland and the old village of Chiswell! I would like to thank the owner Susan for her warm welcome, she was all the time very kind and helpful, and especially for her efforts to make our stay so comfortable, the cottage is really excellent, very well renovated and a mix of contemporary and vintage style which we all enjoyed! The views of the sea both outside the front door and also from the top bedroom window are stunning! The location is fantastic! We could explore and we have enjoyed this beautiful isle, visiting the Portland Bill, the harbour and the D-Day Centre /on the sad date of 1st September/, Weymouth, the lovely Dorchester and the idyllic Abbotsbury! Our stay at Portland was a bit short but a really unique experience in this part of the very popular and so beautiful Dorset! Not to forget the stunning sunsets and the excellent two places where you could enjoy the beautiful Channel and the sea drinking coffey or eating fish: the Quiddles Cafe/Restaurant and the Heights Hotel /excellent ice cream!/ with unique views to the sea and to the whole area! We enjoyed our stay so much and we will be pleased to return soon! And last but not least we would like to see again our new good friend - the cat Maddison :). Thank you Susan and with our best wishes! Teofana and her family and parents
Wow!!!! What a fantastic Review of your stay on Portland Teofana. I am so happy you all had such a lovely time.

Great base from where to explore the Jurasic Coast
Casita Del Mar is a great base from which to explore Portland and beyond. The cottage is full of character, and provides everything you need. Fortuneswell has good pubs and restaurants within walking distance. Portland offers atmospheric walks, the Rodwell Trail excellent traffic free cycling, Chesil Beach good fishing and Castletown great Scuba Diving. We’ll definitely be back next year!
Thank you so much Chris for a wonderful Review.
Hope to see you next year.
Cute, well kept, terrace house on Portland
Three bedroom house serviced us well for walking the South West coast path, Cove Inn is round the corner with fantastic sunsets
Thank you David for your positive Review. Susan
Great location and value for money
2 of us stayed here but has enough beds for 6 people and is good value for money. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you'll need. Furniture is a bit outdated but the house itself is well looked after. Location was great for us with a 3 min walk to a quiet and beautiful pebble beach and restaurants also in walking distance. Thank you for a lovely stay.
Thank you for your positive Review Emily. Just one response! I never saw the furniture as outdated more personally picked vintage/retro pieces!!! I’m not a fan of the new but I believe the kitchen and bathroom should be modern which I hopefully achieved. Once again thank you Emily.
Small but convenient cottage nicely placed for all amenities.
Cold on arrival but once we sorted put the heating controls all was well. Nice little cottage
Thank you for your Review Lindsay. I am sorry the heating was not on when you arrived. The cleaner said she also apologises as she forgot to switch it on. I hope it did not spoil your stay. Susan
Clean, comfy and well managed. Small but pretty in an extraordinary place.
For people who don't know Portland it is very hard to describe the mixture of eccentricity, roughness and outstanding natural beauty that characterises it. As someone who has roots in the area it held no surprises for me but other members of my party were suitably amazed by the area. This cottage is an ideal location for exploring the region. It's small but very warm and comfortable, and so many of those issues about cottages (electricity costs, for example) simply are not an issue here. As an old labourer's cottage it is small but very well renovated, as long as tall people rememebr to duck as they move about! The view from outside the front door is unique: you appear to look directly down onto the sea, because of the steepness of the hill on which the house it built. You are 2 minutes walk from a delightful cafe / restaurant, which should be your regular eating place (at least for breakfast and lunch), there is a very respectable tandoori house even closer and no more than 2 miles away is arguably the most thrilling place in the south of England: Portland Bill. Weymouth, just across Chesil Beach, may be rough and ready but has the best beach for 50 miles, while Abbotsbury and the great swathe of glorious south Dorset country is just a short drive away. There is even a working 15th century castle, and that is rarer than you might think. Honestly, what's not to like? Just remember not to mention rabbits on the island and things will go just fine.
Thank you so much for your personal insight into the positives of the cottage, Portland and the surrounding area.
