Villa Aetos is a traditional kalivi (Greek Country House) built of old stone with pool, terraces, gardens and spectacular mountain and sea views. In the heart of the Greek countryside, it is private and very quiet, but at the same time is only ten minutes drive from all the amenities of Skopelos port and the picturesque old town with its shops, cafes and restaurants. Set within its own olive grove, the house is full of traditional character but with all modern conveniences, with old roof beams, cool tiled or wooden floors and a working Skopelitan fireplace. All rooms have magnificent views of the mountains of Skopelos, Glysteri bay with its beach and over to the neighbouring island of Alonissos. Surrounding the house are terraces with many private places to sit either in sun or shade and look at the views, to eat, or to enjoy the cooling mountain breezes by the side of the private pool. There is ample parking near the house which is accessed by private drive from a country track. An additional person can sleep in the lounge - more suitable for an elder child.

About Caroline Fryer
Our names are Rod and Caroline. After visiting Greece for 24 years, we found the island of Skopelos in 1999 and immediately fell in love with the island with its beautiful beaches, green countryside, rugged scenery and friendly people. We have many good Greek friends on the island, and as the years go by we feel an ever stronger connection with Greece and its people. Having renovated an old house in the Kastro area of the old town, we bought our land at Raches in 2004, and then designed and built Villa Aetos as our Greek home. We now divide our time between Greece and our farm house in Norfolk, renting out our Greek home when we are not staying in it ourselves. We hope that our guests will enjoy our house and the beautiful island of Skopelos as much as we do when they come to stay.
Caroline Fryer purchased this Villa in 2004
Why Caroline Fryer chose Sporades
Raches is a very quiet location in the Greek countryside where there are generally no sounds other than birds singing, bees humming and the magical tinkling of goat bells pouring down the mountainside in the early morning. Although only 10 minutes from the main town of Skopelos, it is possible to hear the town hall clock and the ferry sounding its horn as it reaches the harbour, and to see the ferry as it passes Glysteri bay on the way round to the port of Skopelos. It is also very well placed to explore the beautiful and rugged scenery in the island interior, and to reach the beaches on the west coast via the beautiful Potamoi valley.
What makes this Villa unique
The brief for Villa Aetos was to build a Greek country house (kalivi) which would appear to have been standing in the olive grove for around 100 years. This must have worked because it even took in a Greek Mastoras (master craftsman) who thought it was genuinely very old! The design, which we produced ourselves and had converted into a formal plan for submission by a Greek engineer, incorporates all the features of a traditional country house with thick stone walls and pilion slate roof, which is very traditional on Skopelos. Because the house is also built with many modern conveniences, we find it comfortable for winter stays as well as being cool and airy in the hot summer months.

Perfect for couples
This is a great place to stay: good facilities, excellent very private location, comfortable, clean, with no less than 5 places to sit outside depending on where the sun is! Fine view across the hills to the sea. The owners were very helpful when our ferry was cancelled due to a strike, as were the car hire company we used (Magic Cars). It was worth having a 4X4 for confidence on the rough tracks. We had a great 10 days and didn’t want to come home.
Perfect spot to relax and unwind
We had such a perfect stay at Villa Aetos in the beautiful Skopelos Island. Everything we needed was provided in the villa and Rod was extremely helpful and very responsive in the run up to our stay. The villa itself is lovely with the most amazing views. A great place to switch off from the world, relax and read a book with a class of wine in hand. Theideal holiday.
Wonderful relaxed week in a beautiful villa
We had a great week; the villa is secluded, extremely well appointed and has outstanding views over Skopelos Town... a real home from home.
There's plenty to do and explore on the island for the average couple; people were without exception friendly and helpful - by way of example we were met at the port as we got off the ferry by both the owners representative and the hire car company (we used Magic cars... they couldn't have been more accommodating).
The owners also helped us a lot before our arrival when our airline made some last minute changes to our flights.
So, overall fantastic. 5 stars! Many thanks.
We're so glad you enjoyed your stay in Villa Aetos and glad you loved the island as much as we do. Thank you for your feedback, it means a lot to us to know that you enjoyed your stay so much.
A point of clarification for future readers of this review is that Skopelos Town itself is tucked away over the other side of the ridge and you do get a spectacular view of it as you drive back over the ridge and down into town....but not from the Villa itself.
The 'outstanding views' from the Villa are of the island countryside that surrounds the Villa. You have Mount Delphi to the West, Glysteri Bay to the North and to the East Mount Palouki (and its monasteries that look back over Skopelos harbour towards Skopelos town) and beyond that the sea and the island of Alonissos........and on a clear day you can make out Mount Athos on the mainland (80 kilometres away to the North East ......).
Many thanks for your feedback (and the lovely photos of the Villa you sent - watch this space!). Rod & Caroline.
fantastic and Relaxing Stay
The villa was just how we expected it. Well presented and full of home to home comforts. The views were fabulous and it was so peaceful. All supermarkets, shops and restaurants only 10 minutes away but our favourite was literally 3 minutes away called Fotini. Plenty of beaches not far either all a short away. Highly recommend this lovely Greek villa - so much so we are returning next year.
We try very hard to be as helpful as possible - from an initial enquiry right through to the return visit home and beyond - but in the end it's the Villa itself and its position on Skopelos that gives us feedback like this from our guests year after year.......so thank you for this and for booking again so quickly for next year! Rod & Caroline.
We''ve been in Villa Aetos in the summer busiest period and we were lucky to find this peaceful and beautiful place to stay! The Villa is perfectly refined and equipped, the view is amazing and the stay was perfect. The owners are really nice and we had a very romantic and relaxing week here. We'll come back for sure!
I don't quite know where to start as Villa Aetos ticked all the boxes on so many levels. Fabulous views, purest air, beautifully maintained and equipped villa, perfect peace and privacy, the most spectacular views from bed in the mornings, adorable cats (even if you don't like cats you will by the end of your time at the Villa)! The owners were really helpful and their local contact made the travel arrangements really easy and our stay really comfortable. You really do get 'what it says on the tin' with this villa (no craning your head out of the skylight to get a glimpse of the sea here!). There are many lovely places to see or, with the villa being so perfect, stay and read, BBQ or sip wine overlooking the hills. One recommendation we'd make is that you hire a 4x4 for a day or so to explore the mountains as the hire car won't get you there. We haven't stopped recommending this villa to our friends since we returned so you'd better be quick!!
Easy access by car to many of the island’s beautiful beaches: Glysteri or Glyfoneri (Aghios Konstantinos) approx 10 mins to north, Limnonari, Agnondas approx 20 mins, Panormos which has a wide sweeping bay with good swimming and many restaurants 25 mins. Kastani (beach where the main scenes of Mamma Mia! were filmed) 30 mins approx. Scenic views on drive to all beaches, with sand, sand and shingle or large pebbles. Also many attractive drives and walking trails in the beautiful island interior.
The nearest airport is on the next island of Skiathos, with frequent boats, flying dolphins and flying cats to Skopelos throughout the summer months. To travel from Skiathos to port of Skopelos takes 45 to 75 minutes, and Villa Aetos is 10 minutes from the port by hire car. It will be possible to arrange for your car to be left on the port for you to collect, and we will also arrange for you to be met and shown the way to the house.
Skopelos town 10 mins drive, Stafylos 20 mins, Glossa (town at other end of island) and its port of Loutraki 40-45 mins. Wilder, isolated beaches on north east coast (such as Perivoliou) 1hr 15 mins approx. Church on the rock (Aghios Ioannis – used for the wedding scene in Mamma Mia!) 1 hr approx.
Skopelos is the nearest main town. It has numerous restaurants, bars, cafes and a picturesque Chorio (old town) which is built into the hillside with winding alleyways meandering between the old houses and a Venetian Kastro (castle). There is a good selection of fine and artisan jewellery shops, and also many selling artistic pottery and individual clothes. There is also a Health centre and two pharmacies, dentist, vet, police station and tourist information centre.
