The major selling point of this house is its history. Probably built in the first half of the 17th Century, this stone house (with huge internal wood beams) fits perfectly into Dinanʻs old town setting. Its 3 floors include 2 spacious bedrooms, a very atmospheric living room, a bathroom, and a small but not tiny kitchen area. However, keep in mind that you will be in a 400-year old house, with steep, narrow stairs, (We left our suitcases on the bottom floor.). And if you have a bad back, avoid the mattress in the 2nd floor bedroom. (The 3 beds on the upper floor are plenty firm.)
Parking will be a problem on market day (currently itʻs on Thursday).
Spending a few days in this house gave me a chance to experience a bit of a 17th Century vibe, which is why I came to Dinan in the first place.
You can't beat the location but...
Another reviewer mentioned this place was rustic. I figured they were being overly picky.
This place is VERY rustic, so be warned. The beds need to be replaced and are very bad. This home could be really a perfect place even with being 600 years old... It just needs the care and time or into it.
We didn't know we should have brought it in sheets. Luckily the emergency number worked and a very nice lady came by and delivered linens. However we did not get a top flat sheet or pillowcases.
The main living room was very cold and never really warmed up. It was about 4 degrees C during our stay. Also the main living room is very smokey smelling from the fireplace even if there is no fire burning.
The great things:.
Never ran out of hot water
Washing machine in this place
English satellite TV
Lots of videos for kids
Did I say location?
Very roomy and big.
Some simple upgrades by the owner will make this place amazing.
Full of character and Ideally situated
The property was ideally situated to see all the sights and shops of the town and although it was a steep walk down the cobbled street to the Port it was interesting. We just needed to take our rests occasionally. The house was full of old world character and although care had to be taken when using the spiral wooden staircase to the upstairs eveything was comfortable. We were very fortunate finding a parking place nearby however we could have had a problem as we had a Range Rover, some of the access streets are very narrow but this adds to the charm of the place.
Medieval place with aging furnishings
This apartment is located on the main street of medieval Dinan, which is absolutely wonderful. The shower has plenty of hot water. And it indeed has a medieval feel. The pros stop there. The mattress is extremely lumpy and uncomfortable, the small couch is small and dingy, the cooking supplies and dishes are very cheap, the washing machine is very difficult to use, the stairs are dangerous without a real banister and overall it just doesn't feel clean. It was not a pleasant place to spend an evening.
Property in perfect location to explore Dinan. House was clean and very comfortabje and good communication from owner.
thank you, the location is always a bonus ,everyone loves it for that.
another good report and would be happy to recommend this client to other gite owners
Historic property in a fantastic location
The house is several hundred years old and located on the historic road connecting Dinan to the river port. Location could not be better, right in the heart of the historic old town and a 5 minute walk down to the river port. Location was perfect for exploring by foot and doing a walkabout in the town and on the old walled ramparts. The structure itself is a tad rustic (we loved the old stone walls and fireplace!), to be expected considering the age and historical aspect. Having said that, kitchen and bath were modern, clean, and functional. TV had UK satellite which was good for us English speakers. This is not a "pampered" site, but is wonderful if you want to experience Dinan. We would definitely stay here again.
Thank you for your comments , I do like the reference to not being pampered , it is a practical house and I appreciate its location in Dinan is perfect.
We hope you do return to Dinan and thank you for taking some time to write something about your stay.
Best regards JB
Dinan is located on the River Rance and is 20-30 minutes drive from the coast,
where there are many beaches to choose from some of our favorites are at
St Briac sur Mer and Dinard.
Dinard airport is 20 minutes by car. Rennes airport is 35 minutes by car. St Malo ferrport is 25 minutes by car. Roscoff ferryport is 1 hour 45 minutes buy car. Dinan train / bus station is 2 minutes by car 1km from the house. Cars can be hired locally but are not essential.
St Malo and the coast 25km. Rennes the regional capital 30km. La Bourbasais zoo 20km. Mont St Michel 40km. River Rance approx 1km.
Dinan has pretty much all you need with a wide variety of town center shops and plenty of town edge supermarkets etc. A variety of banks, Tourist info office.
A good center for walks along the river, one of our favorites is the tow path walk to Lehon and its ancient Abbey about 45 minutes each way.
Parking for guests is in the street with two areas provided for residents with about 15 spaces on a first come basis, alternatively about 150 down the hill on the right is the Rue Rocquet where more unrestricted spaces are available.
