House in Gordon's Bay, Western Cape, South Africa - 10-15 Minute Walk To The Beach
Im David, I purchased this house in 2002 after a holiday to the area. I have 2 sons Douglas (31) & John (28). We stay in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK most of the year but regularly travel to South Africa to holiday at our home in Gordon's Bay. Obviously its a long way to travel so we can't use it as often as we would like which is why we have decided to rent this to other families like ourselves who are looking for somewhere truly beautiful to holiday.
Owner purchased this Villa in 2002
Why Owner chose Mountainside
After a holiday in Cape Town about 13 years ago (year 2000)we fell in love with the beautiful area and decided to buy a house. We looked at alot of houses in the Cape Town area but Gordon's Bay seemed the ideal choice with its lovely beaches and fantastic views from the hill. When we bought the house it was 3 bedrooms, we then decided to convert and extend to the full 6 bedroom home we have today.
What makes this Villa unique
Situated in the very picturesque town of Gordons Bay, widely advertised as the Safest town in South Africa, the house is ideally located for visiting all of the main attractions and tourist areas on the Western Cape. The area is also a malaria free zone. The cost of living is very reasonable English is the main spoken and written language almost everywhere and they drive on the same side of the road as the UK.

Hard to give a fair review
This house is definitely very spacious and great for a big family holiday. I was let down by the cleanliness of the house. First night we had to wash each and every peace of cutlery and crockery before we could cook. Many things came out the cupboard with food on, it was horrible. Travel agent organised a cleaner for the next day.
Under all the furniture right through the house were dust collections. It was also doubtful if all beds had fresh bedding as some had small fresh appearing stains on. Bottom room on east side matrass was horrible!! Now where to hang washing??
I did not realise how kid unfriendly this accommodation is and would have appreciated a heads up from the owner. Children have to be under supervision every second between the unprotected staircase and the pool two steps away from the front door. The garden is so steep with 0.5 metre high walls with a 3 metre drop.
The pool had many loose tiles around the edges and was a safety hazard. Floating Safety protection provided was not suitable for small children as they could roll to the side underneath the protection and not be seen before its to late.
All south Africans love to braai. The gas braai was horribly dirty!! and if you want to braai on wood which most people do, the only option available was a teeny tiny braai for maximal for 4 people. This was a big let down as sitting outside enjoying the fire is a big part of the SA culture.
On the good side, this house has an amazing view and allot of potential! With some TLC this could be a great holiday home. It was great that each couple had their own bathroom and toilet, and the living area was also great with airconditioner in! A definite no go for a holiday with small kids, but overall the house is ideal for a big group of people!
A really beautiful house with a awesome view over False Bay.
There were a few small things in the house that needed some attention but without a doubt I would highly recommend this beautiful house to others, and would book it again should I travel back to Cape Town.
Thank you very much for your feedback, I am delighted you enjoyed your stay. I would appreciate if you could let me know the bits and pieces still needing sorted so I can attend to these as I will be at the house for the next few wks.
Fantastic property and Location
House is in a fantastic location with Amazing views both during the day and in the evening. The rooms were all clean and had everything we needed. Didn’t want to leave ☹️ Would highly recommend this accommodation
Lovely having your family glad you enjoyed your stay.
Great house with everything you need for a good holiday.
House is in a great spot for visiting Cape Town, the Wine Routes and has good access to the Garden Route. Also very close to the airport.
The house is fully equipped.
Great views over the bay.
Lovely holiday home will certainly be back. Loved it.
Not a good experience
Except for the great view, we did not have a good experience. The house was not clean when we arrived, the blinds in the bedrooms were in terrible shape, the patio umbrella was broken, the AC did not work, the downstairs curtains are old and dirty, some of the bedroom lights did not work, not to mention bothersome dust mites/ bugs in one of the beds. Despite numerous requests to the property manager to turn on the Dstv, it was only done the day before we left. The house has great potential if the owners spend some time and money upgrading the interior.
I am truly sorry for your experience Elsie we arrived just after you and have to agree we were very disappointed the agent is clearly not doing his job ! We are now here and rectifying issues but that's a little late for you. I am so sorry things were not right for you and am sad our home is not being properly looked after for our guests my sincere apologies.
14.01.19 I have just returned after 3 weeks at the house which I spent replacing all down stairs internal broken doors replacing aircon unit replacing blinds, kettle, washing machine, iron which were all broken or missing, painting the entire upstairs, fixing blinds and external doors and replacing all bedding. I hope in future people using our house could have a little respect for our property and if things get broken which obviously sometimes happens please let me know so I can sort it.
Loved it. Location was perfect, central for all the attractions.
House has loads of space and great for allowing own privacy. Views from the house are amazing, view over Table Top Mountain are fantastic.
Very handy for local restaurants and close to the large shopping Mall, Summerset West. Only one hour from Cape Town and 30mins from the Airport.
Winery within 15 minutes, so many others to choose from.
Over all a great location can't wait to go back.
Bikini beach is the closest beach, calm seas and warm water- perfect for paddling. There are also a range of cafes along the beach front. Strand beach is a short car journey away this is famous for surfing, lessons are available here. If you are looking for a beach out of this world, Betty’s Bay is approx 30 minute car journey along a lovely coastal road. This is more of a hidden wonder as its not used often by locals and tourists, and our preferred beach when holidaying.
Cape Town Airport approximately 30 minutes, drive straight along the N2. We would highly recommend car hire to get the most from your visit and the beautiful surroundings.
Cape Town less than 1 hour drive away, almost all motorway driving.
Stellenbosch & wine areas approximately 40 minutes drive through a very scenic route brings you to Stellenbosch, in the heart of Cape Winelands.
Hermanus which boasts the best land based whale watching in the world between October to January, is approximately 1 hour drive.
Cape Point & Cape of Good Hope approximately 2 hours through Simonstown & Fishheok.
Somerset Mall 15 minutes drive with lots of shops to choose from.
10-15 minutes walking distance from Gordon's Bay but return up fairly steep hill where you will find everything from cafes and restaurants, to Book Shops and Beauty Salons and Supermarkets. There is also a great laundry service and some very nice pubs and bars.
As we have holiday in Gordon's Bay a few times, there is a full range of trips and attractions we have visited, some of our recommendations are below:
Spier (Moyo)- The 1,500 seater restaurant offers lively outdoor entertainment, bringing the taste of Africa to visitors’ treetop table or stylish tent.
Grand West Casino and Entertainment- This complex offers ice-skating, cinema, restaurants, ten pin bowling and of course the casino.
Stellenbosch Wine Tasting- There are lots of very good wine tasting farms in this area.
Strand Beach- Surfing lessons, this was not as easy as it looks. Although good fun.
Robben Island Museum- From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island served as a place of banishment, isolation and imprisonment. Nelson Mandela was imprisoned here.
Table Mountain- Ariel cableway; see Cape Town from the top of Table Mountain. For the more adventurous you can hike up or abseil down the mountain.
Horse Riding- Can be done on the hills overlooking Gordon’s Bay then finish off with nearby wine tasting.
Deep Sea Fishing- Charters leave locally form Gordon’s Bay Old Harbour
Shark Diving- Done at Hermanus, cage dive with Great White Sharks!
