The property is fantastic and the rooms are really stunning and decorated in a real old style. The hosts were lovely and changed some beds around for us as the children all wanted to share a room. And its also only 5 minutes from a great village with lots going on. But really the main thing was the pool and the barn space which is just magic, it has a proper kitchen in it and spent the whole time in the barn or around the pool with the children because we could be in the shade if we wanted and its breathtaking and private, with beautiful views. Really we had such a good holiday we couldn't have asked for more.
Superb views and great house... few 'buts' though
I echo all the things about the location, its superb and the views are great. The house is an old rustic farmhouse, plenty of room and nice and cool inside. The best part however, has to be the barn, with a fitted kitchen and big dining table - we only ever ate there.... it overlooks the pool, so you can cook and laze (2 sofas) while the kids play in the pool. Really very good.
Also the local village is great - do try the steak and frites on the Friday night.....
Few things of note - we didn't notice the cats in the description, so make sure you note there are 3 cats on site. Kids loved them, but not so much on the 1st night at 3am, when one jumped on one of their beds - the screams were quite something.
Beware the other rules - which are not given to you until AFTER you pay in full.
The 5pm entry time is rather late, but there is a supermarket in Monsegur where you can stock up, even on Sunday. What vexed us, was the 10am depart time - They insist that their guests tidy and CLEAN the bathrooms and hoover the house before leaving, or risk losing their deposit. They even send a nice reminder to that effect on the last day, which was badly received by our group....especially as we didn't find the house particularly clean when we arrived. Beds must be stripped, you are responsible for laundering all the pool towels etc - we felt it was all a bit much.... we would have tidied, obviously, but I do not expect to be hovering and cleaning before I leave... esp with a 10am departure time... they need 7 hours to turnaround the house, by that rationale, I wonder what time they expect their paying guests to get up and start work.
Also note - kids are not allowed to play on the tractor or indeed play in the garage (where the tractor is parked). Surprisingly the kids ignored the lovely old Massey 35, but since the cats were fed in the garage and often hung out there, we had to keep shooing the kids out. The garage should have a door and be locked - stacked wood etc is I agree not the best with small children.
Finally, note in the house rules, in red with multiple !!!!!!!!!!! is that you are liable for the cost of the pool liner (several thousand eur), if you use sun tan lotion in the pool. Our kids did indeed have rash vests, but head to toe coverings for bathing, are not well received in France at the moment.... so you still need to use sun tan lotion.
Its a great place, but the house rules should be provided/read BEFORE booking.....
I’m glad you enjoyed the location and the house; however I am surprised that the rules, which are currently standard for most rental properties in France upset you. The holiday makers before and after you rated us at 5 stars! The arrival and departure times and the request to leave the house tidy upon your departure are based on standard norms. I explained in the instructions that were sent to you 8 weeks prior to your arrival we are always here to help and are on call for 24hrs a day should you have any problems or queries. If you were arriving into France very early why did you not just call us, we are reasonable people and would have done our best to get you into the house earlier as we have done with others before you. We always try to accommodate our guests wherever possible. Regarding cleaning, all we ask is that you leave the house as you found it which is the same for all rental properties everywhere. Many rental properties charge extra for the changeover cleaning but we have never done this. And if you are averse to cleaning we also offer a very inexpensive maid service on the website. After our guests leave we clean again including inside drawers, cupboards, fridges, ovens etc as invariably there are things that are over looked. We do the laundry for 10 people and gardening for the 5 hectares of land and that is why we need those hours. The house was immaculate when you arrived I checked it myself. Regarding the pool, we just ask that you take care of it, unfortunately excessive suntan lotion ruins the liners of pools (it stains them yellow for some reason and there is no way to clean it off) and if we allowed everyone to disregard this then the pool would have been dirty and discoloured for you as well as everyone else. Past renters have used a one day waterproof application (more economical for your pocket and better for children’s skin) and used the pool shower provided without problems. Regarding the towels, house towels are provided and laundered by us. However we also offer pool towels as an extra (many houses do not offer these) to save you bringing them in your luggage but we do ask you to launder these. Again it was written in the instructions, sent to you 8 weeks before and if you were unhappy with the idea of looking after them then perhaps you should not have used them. We do our best to make sure that the house is amazing for all of our guests, had you contacted us we would have done our best to help you with any problems.
Old style French farmhouse, charming, perfect !
My family and another family stayed at Bernataou at the end of August for two weeks and I have to say the place far exceeded our expectations. The house was an old style French farmhouse which was very charming and its location was perfect, on the top of a hill with views everywhere and totally private. The house was clean and comfortable with proper beds and pillows and each room had a fan and mosquito net which was very handy. The best part of the house though was the large swimming pool and outside barn sitting area. It’s enormous and had a proper kitchen in it with long table and sofas so we could relax and watch the kids playing in the pool. We spent all of our time in there. The house is well stocked unlike other rental properties we’ve stayed in before, including loads of bikes and scooters and toys for the kids. The owners were really kind and even helped us when one of the kids had a suspected broken thumb! Luckily after a scan all was fine! The kids particularly loved the cats, we didn’t see one of them but the other two were very sociable and friendly.
The local town was really fun and on Wednesdays they have a gourmet eating market with music which we all enjoyed. We also went to see Duras castle which was 10 minutes away. There are quite a lot of shops and restaurants close to this house which was handy as we didn’t want to be too far away from everything. The local village which is just down the hill from the house has a corner shop with croissants and a tapas bar that we went to one Friday night and the locals were very nice to us.
All in all it was once of our best holidays and we were happy to spend much of our time just round the pool enjoying the house, the peace and the barn.
We will definitely be coming here again.
so glad you had a wonderful holiday :)
Incredible house in unbelievable setting
We stayed at Bernataou as 8 friends in early July and couldn't have chosen a better place.
The very, very pretty house has 5 very comfy and clean double bedrooms but we spent most of the week in and around the incredible open barn. It's got a brilliant second kitchen and massive dining table, along with gas BBQ and of course the great pool so it was the perfect place to spend all day relaxing, swimming, playing table tennis and eating bread and cheese.
The house is surrounded in 360 degrees by idyllic vineyards and sunflower fields so it feels very remote. But if you do want to venture out, there's lots of markets and night markets nearby, as well as loads of pretty towns. It's an ideal part of France to get away from it all, and take in a bit of the local culture if you want.
We all agreed we'd definitely come back to Bernataou. It was exactly what we hoped for, and even better than it looks in the photos.
A family home set in an idyllic spot surrounded by nature yet a short distance to a bustling French town. Beautiful outdoor living area and pool. Huge stone house with lovely large rooms. Perfect place for a family vacation. See you next year!
I went to stay at Bernataou last summer with a group of friends and can highly recommend the house and it's fabulous setting. The pool is stunning, enjoys privacy and a feeling of being in the open at the same time. The garden is beautifully mature and the house is very comfortable with lots of charm. I would highly recommend this property for a holiday to get away from it all and soak up the amazing French summer. It's perfect for children and adults alike. There are beautiful walks, fantastic nearby markets and lots of wine tasting...I'm booking again for summer 2015.
1 hour 10 mins to the nearest beach. Arcachon also boasts the largest sand dune in Europe- great fun with kids!
