Four storey village stone house built in 1906, completely refurbished, with white-washed walls, original cotto floors and exposed chestnut beams. New courtyards and paths for 2017. Lots of space for outdoor eating and chililng. Thick stone walls mean it’s cool in the height of summer and toasty once the gas central heating fires up in winter. The village is a typical Italian hillside community, mostly totally quiet, but also passing goatherds, boar & bird shooting, agriculture, as well as the usual hubbub of Italian village life. It’s also a very safe and welcoming environment and our guests don’t feel they have to be too precious, (especially good if you have younger kids), and great, if like us, you love your music! After nightfall the village is totally silent, devoid of light pollution so ideal for star-gazing and chasing fire-flies.

About peter antenen
Professional couple, based in the UK. Well-travelled in Europe, been holidaying (and working) in Italy for two decades. The owners use the house year-round outside guest rental periods.
peter antenen purchased this House in 2006
Why peter antenen chose Bagni di Lucca
We spent ten years looking all over Italy and eventually found and fell in love with this little corner of Tuscany. Hot, but not too hot, real scenery, lovely people, loads to see and do, great little hilltop towns, high, interesting and green countryside, skiing nearby…. Top seven things we like to do: 1.Long al fresco lunches in the courtyard 2.Swimming in the pool then sunbathing all day on the decking 3.the evening passagiata through the village squares and lanes (especially if it’s just rained! – very ‘Name of the Rose’) 4.A long day out in Firenze, with shopping at the Barberino outlet mall. 5.The Sunday antiques market in Lucca. 6.Touring through the nearby Garfagnana valley. 7.Barga for dinner, followed by passagiata and gelati!
What makes this House unique
Some more of our favourite things... 8.A beach day at Viareggio, with a seafood lunch in a beach cafe. 8.Going to Lucca out of season for some retail therapy and dinner. 9.Skiing at Abetone, just for the day or stopping over in a friendly family hotel with a gourmet dinner 10.Long day out in the Cinque Terre, swimming, sunbathing and lunching: our favourite fishing village is Vernazza. 11.August Festival in Gombereto – La Festa Medievale: flag-throwers, food stalls, processions and fireworks. Mad! 12. Touring Il Strada del Vino – the Lucchese hills wine route –sampling Montecarlo whites and reds and sumptuous olive oils 13.Morning and evening walks up to the shop, then back round the roads, enjoying the views; about 30 minutes, perfect before dinner! 14.Chillin' with a cold one.

Tuscan Family Holiday
11 of us ranging in age from 5 to 65 had the most fabulous holiday in this beautiful, relaxing place. The villa is truly rustic with a warm and comfortable feel to it, so well equipped and part of a lovely local community in the Tuscan hills. Days were spent relaxing round the pool, walking through the woods or driving into Bagni for a mooch about the local shops and a spot of lunch. Evenings were a feast of local goods cooked on the bbq and accompanied by glorious wine and late night swims or card games. A birthday was celebrated in style at one of the local restaurants one evening, day trips by train to Pisa and Lucca were easy even with the youngest traveller. Weather was great, odd thunder storms in the afternoons that only lasted an hour or so, then back to the sun. We were so sad to leave this wonderful place, think there will be a return visit in a few years time......
Beautiful rustic house surrounded by impressive nature – very relaxing
Peter is a very open and supportive host. He solved every problem we had immediately. Thank you Peter. We had a wonderful relaxing and adventurous stay at Peter's house. The whole village and Peter's house has a lot of charme. You can feel all the history. And the nature around is very impressive. We spent a lot of time at the house, the woods, and the places around because there is a lot to discover. We also enjoyed the fresh breeze coming from the woods. Especially for the kids and our dog it was enough to enjoy:) We can also recommend the markets with fresh food from the region for a good price. Better than the supermarkets! The house is perfect for people who enjoy a rustic lifestyle and are happy to wake up with the rooster.
Fabulous house in fantastic location
Booked this as a family of seven plus small child and we just loved it.Wanted to be a part of true Italian style village life up in the mountains(despite the regular trips up and down the mountainside to town on the edge of my seat!)Nothing to disappoint here, even though the weather turned for us!We sat out every night late into the evening and even had a dip or two in the pool which was a trifle fresh owing to the cooler weather!Loved preparing the evening dinner in the spacious fully equipped kitchen, somehow not a chore there. As soon as we hit uk we were already missing the house, the village and Tuscany!Got to go back next year.
We had a fabulous holiday here. Absolutely beautiful grounds and views. A rustic old house, but has everything you need. This house is a great base to go and explore from, set about 500meters above sea level in the mountains. The village is perfect and a great small store that sells all the essentials. 20mins down the mountain Is lovely Bagni di Lucca with larger supermarkets.
The pool was a nice size not huge but perfect for the 6 of us. A great BBQ area and hammock in the shade. The patio area outside the kitchen is newly done and was wonderful to sit out there for every meal, most nights we sat out and played games in candle light. A few doors away is s great English couple called Shirley and Roy who run a B&B. If you have any questions they can help. Shirley also does massages, facials etc they a good! Roy is a brilliant chef for a price per person £25-30 he will do a 2 course meal for your party. We did it and the food was outstanding it's a must we loved it.
Home away from home
The villa was a really characterful but comfortable place to stay, with everything you need for an affordable but luxurious self-catering break. The furnishings were appropriately rustic whilst still being a nice place to relax and lying in the hammock in the dappled shade you feel a lot further away from civilisation than you really are. Bagni di Lucca has plenty to offer for a short drive down the mountain (and I understand there's a bus service as well), and it makes a great hub to explore Tuscany. Alternatively you can just hole yourself up on top of a mountain with a stack of ice lollies and sangria with a good (or not so good) book by the pool, though don't be surprised if you get distracted by the view, which is beauuuutiful. The house also has lots of books, CDs and DVDs for those days when you really don't feel like moving :) The kitchen and dining space is huge which makes for a really sociable cooking experience as well. I can't recommend this villa more highly - a really wonderful holiday!
Et fantastisk sted
Boligen levede op til vores forventninger. Området er meget interessant og smukt
Special interest holidays:
Ideal for: cycling, touring, hiking, arts and culture tours.
Viareggio Beach is an hour away by car. Forti di Marmi is a posh little resort town. Cinque Terrre - the five lands - are amazing, especially Venazza. Great fishy stew in Livorno!
Pisa airport is an hour away and we recommend that you hire a car from the airport. A compact four door will suit the hills. Sat nav recommended for getting around as some of the road layouts can be a bit tricky.
under 10 mins to spa town of Bagni di Lucca with three supermarkets and a dozen restaurants and pizzerias. The town is famous for its casino and health spas – hence its association with the Grand Tour: its historic literary visitors included Byron, Shelley and the Brownings. There is a small market twice a week, many food shops, well stocked wine merchants with friendly owners. Also an Olympic-size open air swimming pool and a tennis centre. Friendly, convenient internet-café by the river.
Just 40 minutes from the walled town of Lucca, beautiful buildings, restaurants, bike rides and shopping. If you ski, then you're only 45 minutes from the ski resort of Abetone, where you can hire your boots and skis and ski straight off. Visit Puccini's house and open air opera at Lake Massaciuccoli in July and August. The Scots/Italian town of Barga is about 45 mins away, great for the fish and chip festival!
Stunning and unspoilt Garfagnana valley and the Apuan National Park is on your doorstep, within 30 minutes drive. For the kids, Pinocchio Land theme park, the Aqua Village water park and the Cavallino Matto amusement park are easily accessible. For the chaps, the Vespa museum is just outside Lucca. A well-stocked shop is five minutes walk up the hill in the next village. If there’s anything else you need, just ask: we are happy to provide other items if given enough notice.
The housekeeper lives in the village and speaks Italian and English. She will arrange access and keys handover for you, as well as being on hand to help you with any questions.
