About Carola Gillham
I have lived in Ilgaz since 2007 and am married to Öztürk (Oz) who built villas CY1696 and CY3823. I am English and Oz is Turkish Cypriot. Originally from Paphos, Oz fell in love with Ilgaz village in 1974 and achieved his dream of living here about 15 years ago. We have 2 dogs, Zibidi and Maymun. We love the peace and community spirit of the village which has both English and Turkish residents and waking up every morning to spectacular views. We enjoy meeting new guests and hope that they enjoy Ilgaz as much as we do. We have a number of guests who return year after year. As we live in the village we are on hand to help out in any way necessary and we do our best to ensure that you have an enjoyable and memorable holiday in North Cyprus.
Why Carola Gillham chose Ilgaz
Oz built this villa about 12 years ago. It has uninterrupted views down the mountains to the sea and has more than 180 degree views from the terrace. It is situated on the edge of the village and therefore you can have as little or as much interaction with the village as you like. There are mountain walks to be taken from the front door.
What makes this Villa unique
Ilgaz is a small mountain village with both Turkish and British residents. It is 3kms up the mountain and has glorious views of both mountains and sea. A couple of minutes walk from the villa takes you past Etel Winery and into the vineyards where you will find the Tasting Room where you can sit and relax, enjoying a selection of delicious wines. A few minutes walk from the villa is Ilgaz Village Café with freshly prepared Turkish meals and bread baked in its own traditional ovens. Also within the village is Hoots Bar / Restaurant with a charming vine-covered courtyard. 1km down the mountain is Green Heights Park, a restaurant in award-winning gardens. Along the main road are many restaurants and beaches to enjoy. From the front door of the villa are numerous mountain walks ranging from the gentle to more ambitious mountain trails, ideal for bird watching and discovering wild flowers. You can buy bread in the village baked in traditional ovens and freshly laid eggs. We hope that we have provided everything you will need in Carob Villa for a marvellous, memorable and relaxing holiday

A beautiful villa with stunning views
We have had a truelly relaxing 5 day break at Carob Villa in the hillside village of Ilgaz. The villa is very tastefully presented and is comfortable and spacious. Carola and Oz were extremely welcoming and helpful throughout our stay and provided us with everything that we needed to enjoy our stay.
We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay in Carob Villa and it was lovely to meet you all. We hope to see you again in Ilgaz.
A lovely place to escape to ...
Villa Carob is just delightful. A spacious house, set over several levels, with a lovely pool and different terraces on which to settle oneself with a good book and a cold beer in hand ... what's not to like? Carola and Oz are never very far away and respond quickly to any questions without being intrusive. The hotel over the road does the most amazing food along with the tapas bar at the winery - go on, treat yourself! You won't regret it. You do need a car if you plan to go anywhere - the villa is up a hill, but although quite steep and winding, it's an easy drive. Don't let that put you off. But, if you're happy to stay in, and enjoy the pool, and just do gentle walks along to the next village that's also very possible. It's a great place to stay.
Thank you Jackie for your great review. It was lovely to meet you all and we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. We hope to see you again in Ilgaz one day.
Lovely property and wonderful hosts
Communication from Carola before arrival was prompt, efficient, and included very helpful advice. We really appreciated the generous welcome pack. The house is attractive and really well designed. It's also very well equipped, which doesn't always happen, in our experience.
The outside space is generous and the gorgeous pool is in full sun all day. There is also a choice of two barbecues, and both work well.
The winery with its excellent restaurant and bar are just a few minutes walk away. We recommend the wine tour (and tasting of course).
It was delightful to meet Carola and Oz, who were attentive but never intrusive.
It was a lovely holiday and we look forward to returning.
Wonderful relaxing holiday
On arrival we popped over to the winery for a fantastic lunch (the food and service were top class). We felt very relaxed in the villa as soon as we arrived. Carola & Oz provided one of the best welcome packs, which was very much appreciated. The villa really has everything you need, including beach towels - so one less thing to pack!.We enjoyed a lovely walk to Karaman village and can recommend the lovely cafe for a vanilla iced coffee! We recommend Karsiyaka Turtle Watch (can be followed on Facebook) to experience turtle nest excavations and releases. The discover scuba diving with Cyprus Underwater Explorers was great for adding a little excitement and we enjoyed climbing Hilarion Castle with it's amazing views, exploring Kyrenia Harbour and Bellapais Abbey. We can't forget to mention the fantastic Turkish breakfast and fresh bread from Koy Firini Restaurant just up the road!
This was our first holiday to Cyprus, we can recommend the efficient taxi service by Sevener to and from Larnaca Airport directly to the villa where they also provided us with a hire car All in all, great communication from our first contact and a truly wonderful and relaxing holiday - Thank you. We can thoroughly recommend this villa and Carola & Oz's hospitality. We will be back next year!
Thank you for taking the time to write your review. It was lovely to meet you all and we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. We look forward to seeing you all in Ilgaz again next year.
Absolutely stunning. So relaxing, peaceful, secluded, so private. We didn't want to leave. We will definately be back.
It was lovely to meet you all. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and we hope to see you in Ilgaz again soon.
A great villa in a beautiful location supported by caring owners
Our first trip to TRNC so found the help and guidance (and plentiful welcome pack) from Carola and Oz very comforting. The villa itself was ideal for our family. Large for a two bedroomed villa with a great pool - being part of Ilgaz we were not isolated but it still felt private. The location is ideal with views over the coast and mountains. We also benefited from being close to the coast, to the town of Girne (Kyrenia) and being fairly central for exploring other parts of the region.
Thank you for your lovely review. It was great to meet you and your charming family and we hope to see you again in Ilgaz one day.
Etel Winery. A couple of minutes walk from the villa takes you past Etel Winery and through the vineyards to the Tasting Room where you can sit and relax and enjoy a selection of delicious wines.
The coast is 3 kms down the mountain from the villa, about 7 mins drive and 20-40 mins walk. There are numerous beaches nearby, some with restaurants or cafes and water sports activities such as scuba diving, snorkelling, parasending and jet-skiing and others where there are simply warm seas, sand and peace and quiet. Boat trips can be taken Kyrenia harbour along the coast either in the daytime with an excellent lunch provided or evening sunset cruises with dinner.
Most guests fly to Larnaca Airport in South Cyprus. Transfer time is around 1hr 15mins by taxi. Carriers include British Airways, Monarch, Easyjet, Cyprus Airways, ThompsonFly.
Alternatively Ercan (or Lefkosa) Airport in Turkish Republic of North Cyprus is approx 50 mins drive away from Ilgaz. Flights to Ercan have to land en-route in Turkey so total flight time is around 6 hrs. Carriers include Turkish Airlines, Atlasjet and Pegasus Airlines.
Car hire is strongly recommended. We can advise.
The villa is situated on the lower edge of the village of Ilgaz. The picturesque and historic Kyrenia harbour is about 15mins drive from Ilgaz and Bellapais Monastery and St Hilarion Castle about 20mins drive away. The village of Karmi / Karaman which is entirely made up of traditional houses is across the mountains from Ilgaz, about 40-60mins walk away.
There are two good restaurants / cafes in Ilgaz within a few minutes walk from the villa.A few minutes walk from the villa is Ilgaz Village Café with freshly prepared Turkish meals and bread baked in their traditional ovens. Also in the village is Hoots Bar / Restaurant with a harming vine-covered courtyard. 1km down the road is another restaurant with award-winning gardens and large pool. On the main road 3 kms down the hill from Ilgaz there are a number of shops, many restaurants, supermarkets, a petrol station and a bank with an ATM machine which accepts UK bank cards. Most if not all of the shops, restaurants, petrol stations will accept UK cash or debit/credit cards.
Other activities in the area include horse riding, jeep safaris, organised walks, scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing and paragliding.
The nearby supermarkets sell a wide variety of goods including fresh fruit and vegetables and many have their own butchers counter with a wide range of meat. Some sell ready cooked meals. The price of eating out in North Cyprus is very reasonable.
The town of Lefkosa / Nicosia with its historic streets and buildings is 30-40 mins drive away.
