We fell in love with this stone house and we bought it in 2016 and spent a year refurbishing it with a great deal of care and detail. It is a house of infinite character and charm. It used to belong to the church in Verga and it is on a hill, overlooking the Messinian Bay. There are steps from the church which lead to the house and garden. The church setting is romantic and breathtakingly pretty The house was the village school in its' previous life and once upon a time, it also also belonged to the family of Mavromixali who started the Greek revolt against the Ottoman Empire in 1821. The house comprises of a main house and a guest room which is separate to the main house. It is a total of 210 square meters. The main house is on two levels and is spacious. It has a modern and fully equipped kitchen (brand new appliances which include an oven, electric hob, fridge and washing machine)and dining area on the ground floor in addition to a living area which overlooks the sea. This floor has wood floors throughout and high ceilings with wood beams. There are steps which lead from this floor to a sitting area on the lower level which has a sofa bed and can sleep an additional 2 guests. There is also a large bedroom with a king sized four poster bed. The bedroom has sea views and lots of warbrobe space. There is a new and modern shower room on the same level. The guest room is seperate to the main house. It also has a king sized 4 poster bed and an ensuite loo and sink. It has a roll top bath in the bedroom. This room also has sea views. The house has been decorated with mostly antique pieces of furniture from Greece and Asia. All the linens in the property are from the White Company and are cotton percale. There is a large Smart TV as well as wifi in the house. The gardens of the property are on different levels which offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside and of the bay. There is a build in outdoor barbecue and an outdoor dining table which seats 8 people. The house is cleaned once a week and the linens and towels are changed weekly too. If you wish, we are able to provide breakfast at an additional fee. Although we have a small child who is three, we feel it is important to mention that the property is unsuitable for unsupervised young children as the steps leading to the property and also the steps within the garden are steep. Please note that there are 87 steps from the church to the front door of the house. This is fine for healthy adults and teenagers but probably not for the elderly or for anyone with mobility problems. We suggest that you have a car as the house is located on a hill. We can provide you with a right hand drive car to rent for an additional cost.
The house is a 5 minute drive to a few spectacular beaches. It is a 12 minute drive to the restaurants, bars and cafes in Kalamata town. It is worth mentioning that most of the best bars are in Verga itself, just a few minutes drive from the property. There are lovely taverns located near the property. The house itself is a 25 minute drive from kalamata airport. It is ideally located for exploring the Mani.
