You won’t have to stand on the shoulders of giants to see further than pretty well anyone else in the area when you’re in the main garden of the House of Villeboisien. The views are tremendous.
But you will be walking in the footsteps of the Gauls and Romans. They both built forts here to take advantage of the commanding view.
The House of Villeboisien itself is quite special, too. Imagine yourself in this exquisitely-restored 18th Century mansion set in the beautiful countryside on the border of Charente and Dordogne.
All five bedrooms and the four en-suite bathrooms have been appointed to match the style and elegance of the house.
As befits a manor house, the grand façade dominates the road between the chateau and the church. Yet, when you are relaxing, sipping something refreshing, in the loggia, looking down on the intimate courtyard garden, you could be in a quiet rural cottage.
Then, when the mood takes you, you can wander up, past the ancient fortified wall, to the stone steps that will take you to the vast upper garden and private swimming-pool.
From this high vantage point, you can gaze west, over the roof of the house toward the rolling Charente countryside. Stroll up to the north side of the grounds and you can look down onto the entrance to the Chateau. Turn to the east or south and you’ll be taking in the Perigord Vert region of the Dordogne for as far as your eyes can see.
One of the real assets of this wonderful house is that you can enjoy all the space and privacy the property offers, but the picturesque village of Villebois Lavalette is just a minute’s walk away.
The village is host to numerous amenities including two boulangeries, a bank, a butchers’ shop, a patisserie, a small hotel with restaurant, a bar and a grand town hall. But it is most well-known for the magnificent 17th-century covered market. Situated in the heart of the village (and just 200 metres from the house), there’s a market held there every Saturday selling local produce. And on other days, this historic space is used by the bar and the restaurant as a covered outdoor space to dine "en pleine aire".
But let’s get back to the house…
There are 5 bedrooms. The Yellow, White and Coral rooms each have their own large bathrooms complete with WC, bath, separate shower and wash-basin.
The Rose and Green rooms adjoin each other and share a large shower room with WC and wash-basin. This configuration makes it an ideal family room as the Green room has 2 single beds and a cot.
There is also a separate cloakroom on the ground floor.
The ground floor, too,has a large dining room (with a table that comfortably seats 10 people), and a lounge for enjoying the evening after a day of relaxing by the pool or sight-seeing around the beautiful countryside.
The kitchen, as you would expect, is fully-equipped with a dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, hob and oven.
The entire house has been fully restored by local artisans under the direction of a local architect.
As well as the courtyard garden, which in turn leads up to the expansive upper garden at top of hill, you can also enjoy eating outdoors, or simply relaxing in the shade of the magnificent Paulownia tree in the front garden.
