Quiet and relaxing
If you want a peaceful and relaxing holiday this just the place. The cottage has everything you need to ensure you have a good holiday. Karen is a wonderful host who greets you and gives you useful information about the area. Lagos is a ten minute drive away and here you will find plenty of places to eat and drink. There are some lovely beaches a short drive away but some of our favourites were on the west coast where we sat and watched the surfers. We have never been to Portugal before but will certainly return.
It's wonderful that you enjoyed your stay here with us & Portugal. It is a lovely country with the nationals being helpful and lovely and of course the weather. The west coast is very beautiful, if you are lucky enough it's possible to find a beach where you are the only ones on it especially out of the main season.
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Finally, you will always be welcomed back.
Fabulous Cottage in Algarve
Many thanks for a truly memorable stay in the cottage, everything was thought of and we enjoyed our first exploration of the Algarve with the cottage as our base. The walks in the forest were marvellous with our four-legged guide, trips to stunning beaches and visiting local towns and villages made our holiday truly memorable.
You are very welcome! It was our pleasure to have you stay here with us in the Cottage. We are very happy that you enjoyed your first holiday in the Algarve and especially the beautiful area we live in. We very much appreciate our guests for taking the time to write a review. Our best wishes to you both.
A Beautiful Hideaway Cottage
We spent a really amazing week in this stunning hideaway cottage. We could not have wished for anything better. The cottage was so perfect in everyway possible. From the moment we arrived we felt happy and very comfortable and both Karen and John who own the cottage made us very welcome too. The inside of the cottage is very spacious and very well equipped with everything that you could possibly need. The very private garden is really lovely too. A great place to chill out and relax. No noise, just the birds happily singing away. We don't as a rule ever go back to the same place but this beautiful cottage is a must for next September. Thank you Karen and John. See you both next year. Chis & John - Calne, Wiltshire.
Thank you for taking the time to do a review.
We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay here in the Mata National. Looking forward to seeing you again next year. We would like to take this opportunity in sending our best wishes to you both!
A beautiful peaceful location at the beginning of the forest. Karen and John made us feel so welcome and the cottage was perfect, everything you could ever need for a holiday including beach towels and a beach bag! The village, just a short 10 minute walk, is very traditional. Cottage Florestal really is the perfect retreat to get away from it all and we can't wait to return! Very highly recommended.
Thank you Ann & Mark for taking the time to write a review on the Cottage. We are very happy you enjoyed a peaceful holiday in this wonderful setting in the National Forest and we always try to make the Cottage as comfortable for our guests as possible. The Village is a wonderful place to dine out and on occasions listen to the amazing live music. We look forward to your return.
A perfect base to explore western Algarve
The cottage exceeded expectations; it had plenty of room, was clean and well maintained and was in a quiet and secluded spot in the forestry. Karen and John were welcoming and helpful throughout our stay as were their dogs who loved to accompany us whenever we went for a walk.
We had a totally chilled holiday, beach hopping and sampling local food and wine. The cottage had everything you needed for the beach...towels, cool bag, umbrella etc.. Our favourite beaches: Praia da Mareta in Sagres (30 mins drive), praia da Salema (20 mins), Praia da Marinha near Lagoa (50 mins) and Praia do Amado on the West coast (40 mins) where we spent the day watching the surfers. Although most beaches have beds and a couple of restaurants we took everything with us just in case including beer and wine (don't forget the corkscrew).
For food we had several BBQs at the cottage, fresh fish in the supermarkets was so cheap as is the wine. We spent a few nights in the village bar Caramba where it was World Cup fever. A great atmosphere with an eclectic bunch of people. The food is also good, massive portions and amazing prices; a typical meal with bottle of wine for 2 was €24!
The best fish restaurant was in Salema called O Lourenco. We didn't book and arrived about 8pm after a day on the beach, luckily there was 1 table left. I had the shrimp cataplana and Duncan had a huge fresh sole, both delicious and with wine it was about €45. Theres also a lovely pizza place in Salema just at the base of the hill.
I went running several times early morning and there were loads of trails through the forestry and down into the village. This is how I discovered all the statues along a small lane. There are couples dancing, musicians, horses heads and other weird and wonderful creations. Apparently all made by a Portuguese artist who has a house in the village. I'm sure Karen and John would direct you.
All in all, I would highly recommend both the cottage and the area.
It doesn't come any better than Karen & John's cottage and accompanying hospitality! Whether for accessing the walks of the Algarve or relaxing in a tranquil natural environment with every convenience at your finger tips or engaging in the life of the local village or enjoying the sights and sounds of Lagos, the location of this cottage is superb! We have travelled across the globe for numerous years and rarely have we come across self catering rental accommodation which is so well appointed and equipped, offering both comfort and soul inside and out. The "I ing on the cake" is the warmth, humour and friendship that Karen & John bring to this idyllic environment. In our view, you would be foolish to look further if contemplating a short or longer stay in the Algarve.
Luz beach is only a 10 mins drive with its stunning rock face, Lagos beaches are a 15 mins drive including the panoramic Meia Praia beach or the intimate smaller beaches located in the Lagos area. The surfing beaches of the west coast are 30 mins drive.
Faro airport is 55 mins drive via the A22 (Toll Road) or the EN125 which could take longer. A hired car is recommended although there is a bus service from the village.
The village of Barão de São João is only a 15 min walk through the national forest. The historical town of Lagos is a 15 min drive. The beautiful mountains of Monchique with its fantastic panoramic views are a 40 min drive as is Sagres, the most westerly point in the Algarve with its fortress and lighthouse.
The local village has a few shops of which will provide you with essentials and well known for its bars with live music at weekends. The town of Lagos offers a variety of different shops varying from big supermarkets to small high street shops offering you everything you might need and has a variety of entertainment in the evenings.
