This apartment is situated in Thollon-Les-Memises, a small village in France overlooking Lake Leman (Lake Geneva) and nestling at the foot of the Alps and Jura mountains, some 15 minutes drive from Evian and 30 minutes from the Swiss border. What the area offers all holiday–makers is a fantastic time in superb scenery throughout the year.
The village is a quiet little ski station, with approximately 18km of ski runs, mostly at green, blue and red standard. There is a designated black run back to the village, but this is not the only way down. The local ski school has a number of excellent instructors, many of whom speak English, but lessons will need to be booked in advance. There are lessons for children in the mornings, although adult lessons can be booked throughout the day. The slopes open a few days before Christmas and close at the end of March, offering good quality snow for most of the season.
For those wanting ski-ing of a more difficult standard and variety, the “Portes de Soleil” offers over 48km of pistes from Chatel to Avoriaz, Les Gets and Mozine, all linked by cable cars and chair-lifts. Many of these stations are within an hour’s drive from Thollon.
During the warmer months, the hills and mountain areas provide many opportunities for relaxation, walking and trekking. Locally, there are horse-riding, golf, tennis, sailing and rafting facilities. But best of all, the thermals are perfect for those who want to experience para-gliding.
The apartment is on the second floor of Le Neve, one of many newish residences, with a large living space and views of mountains and Lake Leman. In total, the floor-space is approximately 78m sq. A lift and stairwell service all the floors within the building.
The lounge / kitchen area contains two sofa-beds, a dining table and chairs for six people, hob/stove, oven, fridge as well as other necessary appliances, such as a kettle, toaster, iron, ironing board, crockery and cutlery, etc. The room is centrally heated, with under-floor heating during the winter months.
Outside the lounge is a wrap-around balcony that provides a view over the lake towards Lausanne in the distance, as well as a view of Les Memises, the mountains from which the village takes its name. Facing east and south, the balcony receives the morning and early afternoon sun.
There are three double bedrooms in the apartment, but only two are available for booking, unless there is an exceptional reason to book the third as the residence is also a holiday home for the owners, who wish to retain some private area in which to store personal possessions. Bed linen is not included within the cost, but pillows and duvets are.
There is a balcony outside the middle bedroom and this provides views of the mountain.
The apartment has ample storage space for clothes and other items. There is a bathroom, a shower room with a wc., and a separate wc. Attached to the bath is a hand-held shower unit. Towels are not supplied within the booking price.
On the lower-ground floor of the building can be found a secure storage cupboard (cave) which is large enough to hold ski equipment, suitcases, or any other large containers. Outside the main entrance of the building is a numbered and exclusive parking bay and to the side are other vacant bays for second or third cars.
For health and safety reasons, there is to be no smoking inside the apartment. The owners do not want any animals are to be kept within the apartment either. All children and adults should be respectful of the desire for peace and quiet from neighbours within Le Neve and the other residences.
Lettings are usually for a full week (or weeks) commencing on a Saturday and ending on the following Friday, although anything else can be negotiated.
All bookings require a deposit of £250 against damage, theft, etc., and this will be refunded upon receipt of the keys and after the apartment has been checked by the local key-holder. The owners expect all surfaces in the the apartment to be thoroughly cleaned and washed by guests before leaving. This includes vacuuming and washing floors, work surfaces and the oven, if used. Should the apartment not be cleaned sufficiently, financial penalties will be imposed.
Local amenities include restaurants, ski-hire shops, bars, supermarket, a laundrette, information office, etc., all of which are within a few minutes’ walk, as is the telecabine to the ski slopes at the top of the mountain.
In the spring, summer and autumn months the area outside the apartment is ideally suited for young children to play and there is also a small, safe playground in the village, near to the supermarket and the Office de Tourisme. In the winter, the gentle grass slopes become toboggan runs for adventurous youngsters.
There are three ways to get to Thollon:
By air – Geneva is the nearest airport, some 40km away. There are many car-hire offices at the airport and the signage to Evian is very clear, following the coastal road along the shores of the lake. From Evian, the road to Thollon is well sign-posted, after turning right at the Alize Hotel, which is opposite the ferry terminal.
By train – Trains leave Paris regularly for either Geneva or Lausanne. There are car-hire offices at the station and in Evian and Lausanne.
By road - The easiest route is to follow the toll motorways from Calais to Bourg-en-Bresse, then to Annemasse and on to Evian. With comfort stops, this journey takes about nine hours from Calais. However, a more relaxing journey is to leave the motorway at Langres and follow the N roads through Gray and Besancon, Pontalier to Vallorbe and the Swiss border, catching the Swiss motorway to Villeneuve, then following the lake road to Evian. This route is much shorter, but takes a similar amount of time and a lot less fuel.
