About Bernadette Graham
We are a family with 3 sons who have lived away from our home in New Zealand for over 20 years. We have family roots in Croatia and during our first visit to Croatia in 2010 instantly fell in love with Istria. From that moment we started looking at land to design and build our villa and were fortunate to find a wonderful site. We currently live in Dubai so the Villa is very convenient as it is only a 2 hour drive from Venice Airport and with sons in the UK, Italy and New Zealand it gives us an opportunity to come together during the year.
Bernadette Graham purchased this Villa in 2012
Why Bernadette Graham chose Oprtalj
It is a truely unique setting whether enjoying the views to the Adriatic, tasting the wine and culinary delights especially the well known black or white truffle, conversing with the very friendly people in the close by historical towns of Opartlj, Grosjnan and Motovun or being adventurous in on and off road bike riding and hiking or just enjoying the peace and relaxation at the Villa. It is close enough to both inland and coastal towns but also in a peaceful countryside location. There is something for everyone.
What makes this Villa unique
Our Villa is designed for one or two families with an outdoor terrace off each of the five bedrooms. A quiet peaceful location where you can enjoy watching the wildlife and sometimes deer drinking from the pool in the early hours of the morning. The Villa has a basement gym and hamman as well as an expansive pool terrace for true relaxation.

Great Vibe. Beautiful location
Modern facilities still capturing the dynamics of the Istrian culture that had everything we needed. Views and Panoramic Scenery that have to be seen to be believed. Thanks for the outstanding hospitality in one of the worlds hidden gems. Would recommend and come again

Immaculate Villa in the Most Idyllic Countryside
This was our first experience of Istria / Croatia and one that I doubt will be surpassed again! Villa Portole was exceptionally clean and had every amenity to hand. The manager, Smiljan, went out of his way to look after us, without ever interfering in our week. We had planned to see more of the stunning countryside but the home is so beautifully charming and peaceful we actually ended up spending most of our time lazing in or by the pool with only the (very) occasional tractor driving down the road to interrupt the peace!
Oprtalj is a very quaint hilltop village surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. The restaurants that we dined out were all excellent (and considerably cheaper than we were expecting); the information pack in the house provides a full list of recommended restaurants. Lots of seaside towns within a 20 minute or so drive, to explore too. The week flew by but we were totally chilled out by the end of it...wonderful! I would highly recommend this property for any family / group.
We are thrilled you managed some "chill" time and also a little time to explore the beautiful countryside. We hope to see you back at Villa Portole oneday soon.
Everything it said it would be, and more!
We have just returned from 2 weeks staying at the Villa Portole, and have loved every minute! The Villa is amazing, beautifully finished, but very homely, everything you needed was on hand, and of the highest quality! The kids would have been quite happy to spend everyday in the pool, and the adults would have been just as happy to enjoy the amazing views and countryside this villa is set in! We did venture out though and would recommend places such as Porec ( kids went jetskiing and speed boating here) plus it was good for shops and restaurants, Novigrad too was good for eating out, esp in the evening. Motovun has stunning views, and a sunset not to be missed. Must also recommend the restaurant "Vrh", which is owned by Smiljans' parents, (Smiljan is the villa manager, for whom nothing was too much trouble). The whole experience, from first booking this villa, was so smooth and easy, thanks to Bernadette the owner, and once we were there Smiljan, who was on the other end of the phone if he was needed. Istria is a stunning part of Croatia, and Villa Portole is the perfect place to discover it from. We would highly recommend this Villa, and hope to return in the future!
We are pleased you loved Villa Portole as much as we do! You certainly took advantage of having a wonderful family holiday and enjoying many of the experiences Istria has to offer. We would certainly welcome you back in the future.
Nothing can top this villa!
Every part of our stay at this villa was superb; the organisation pre trip with the owners, the welcoming, the furnishings, the bathrooms, the pool, the bedrooms, the kitchen, the Smart TV and stereo system, the comfortable living room, the steam room, the gym, the BBQ etc. etc. We couldn't have hoped to have had a better week away!
The view from the villa looks right across the stunning Istrian landscape with the sea in the distance - meaning unbelievable sunsets every night! It is only about a 5 minute drive from the local town/village (Opratlj) which has a little market and restaurant. If you want to do a big shop then the best bet is about a 20 minute drive to Buzet. This might sound strenuous, however, it is an easy drive and you get some more amazing views of Motovun set up on the hill. We did two big shops which covered us for the entire week.
Another bonus set aside from the house was that food, alcohol, petrol, etc. were all extremely cheap in comparison to UK prices so in the end we also ended up staying way under our planned budget.
If you want some nice day trips then Motovun is only 20 mins away, then Porec and Vrsar are about an hour away. Again that sounds horrible but the roads are so easy to follow and drive on that it only means you get to see more of Istria. Both Vrsar and Porec are beautiful coastal towns.
We used the week as a retreat to get away from everything and everyone and have a full on rest and we got just that. We didn't get disturbed by anything or anyone. So if you want a holiday where you can get complete privacy, a state of the art villa, as well as easy access to beautiful towns then I really don't think that you could find another place that could top this!
What a wonderful holiday you had. We hope to see you back again to visit our many more local towns.
Heaven on earth
we have stayed in Villa Portole for a week with our family and enjoyed every minute of it. It is located in a beautiful surrounding and the house itself is a bliss. The interior design is done with a lot of love for detail and provides great comfort.
Our 5-star rating not only describes the house but even more the housemaster Smiljan who has been a great and welcoming host but also a great help when we ran into trouble with our car.
We strongly recommend this house as the ultimate secluded holiday retreat .. we will certainly come back.
We are thrilled you had a wonderful week and hope to see you again sometime in the future.
20-30 minute drive to a choice of beaches and water activities.
We recommend flying into Pula Airport (Croatia) or Trieste (Italy). Ryan Air flies to Pula from Stanstead, Monarch Airways from Gatwick to Pula and Lufthansa from Munich to Pula. Rijeka and Ljubiliana are approximately 90 minutes drive and Venice approximately 2 1/2 hours. A car is essential.
Villa Portole is located near the antique village of Oprtalj which has a small convenience store, tavern and cafe/bar. The medieval town of Motovun (famous for its world renowned Film Festival) is 10 minutes away, as is the wonderful artist town of Groznjan. 20 minutes away is the local fishing village of Novigrad, quaint with excellent restaurants. Livade (famous for truffle) is nestled at the base of the hill on which Oprtalj sits. The whole of Istria is within easy driving distance.
As well as just relaxing beside the private pool or cooking and eating al fresco style on the outdoor terraces, there are numerous other leisure activities to suit. You can explore the rich cultural heritage of the region with medieval towns and villages dating back over 1000 years, visit the local vineyards and olive groves for tastings, visit the uniqueness of the coastal towns and fishing villages, enjoying their wonderful cuisine or take a swim in the crystal clear Adriatic Sea. Take advantage of the many sporting amenities available eg. cycling, hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, tennis, golf etc. Explore Istria's history and beauty while feeling totally relaxed and comfortable. ATM machines and well-stocked supermarkets are readily accessible. Good restaurants within easy traveling distance boast local wines and excellent local produce. Don't forget the region is famous for its truffles, a real specialty and delicacy.
