3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom Private Villa, sleeps 6, Arroyo de Medina near the lovely town of Oria in beautiful Almeria, Spain
About Edward Gregg-Rowbury
My wife and I took early retirement 10 years ago and during our holidays since then had been looking to purchase a holiday villa in southern Spain. We searched long and hard, making numerous trips to the region in both high and low season and never had a wet or cold day!! We were both very much taken with the friendliness of both the local and "ex pat" communities in the area around Albox and the Almanzora valley. We discovered Villa Marco Carlos late in 2011 and began our purchase of it. Since acquiring the property we have made a number of improvements to the pool and constructed a new gazebo and barbeque area and intened to carry on with a new laundry room, outside bar and ultimately a jacuzzi.
Edward Gregg-Rowbury purchased this Villa in 2012
Why Edward Gregg-Rowbury chose Oria
We fell for Villa Marco Carlos almost at first sight, the location, with its magnificent 360 degree views, its great atmosphere and of course, not forgetting the spacious 10m swimming pool. We like tranquil holidays for ourselves and the villa certainly affords us this with the lovely views from the front terrace and newly built gazebo. When our extended family come to stay, there is enough space for everyone in and around the pool as well as indoors with our good size bedrooms and living area. Being our second home, we have tried to equip the villa with all of the day to day requirements that make a villa holiday as relaxed and carefree as it should be, as well as trying to create a home from home atmosphere.
What makes this Villa unique
We enjoy most of all the tranquility that the mountainside location affords us. With its clear air and cooling breezes we live "al fresco" virtually all day. As evening falls the sunsets can be spectacular and both the front terrace and gazebo make ideal places to sit and relax to watch the free light show! The area retains its "old Spanish" charm, the quiet town of Oria can provide all of our requirements if need be but we know the young ones appreciate larger Albox - a typical working Spanish town. A number of tourist sites such as Mini Hollywood near Tabernas, the Med beaches and the wonderful Cabo de Gata National Park all help to provide us with a variety of things to do whenever we go. Of course, the Spainsh are also renowned for their fiestas where all are made most welcome

A Fantastic Holiday
We enjoyed an excellent week at Villa Marco Carlos earlier this month. The villa itself was great, with all of the facilities we could want including a new dishwasher which saved us a lot of time and energy! The weather was great and allowed us to enjoy the unspoilt mountainous scenery around the villa. Having been the year prior, we decided this time to make use of having the car and decided to explore in addition to relaxing by the pool. We visited Albox numerous times for shopping purposes and also visited a range of restaurants - a personal favourite is the Happy Garden Chinese. We also enjoyed the Tuesday morning market - a great Albox tradition. The owner and previous guests leave suggestions in terms of fun activities to enjoy whilst in the area. As a result, we drove to San Jose (around 1hr 30mins away) and found a stunning beach to spend the day at. Whilst at the beach we paid to go on a kayaking expedition provided by the company 'Happy Kayak' and would definitely recommend, it was great fun and allowed us to explore the stunning areas of San Jose. The villa is not too far away from numerous great beaches consisting of both large and smaller coved areas, such as those in Mojacar, Garrucha and Aguilas.
All in all we enjoyed a great week, consisting of a balance between relaxation and exploration.
We would definitely recommend Villa Marco Carlos, particularly for those who appreciate wonderful scenery, absolute privacy and perhaps something different to a traditional Spanish holiday.
Thanks Ed, for letting us stay in your beautiful villa for a second perfect holiday.
It’s so quiet & peaceful, the perfect place to relax and recharge the batteries.
As long as you appreciate that you need a car as there’s no restaurants/bars/shops in walking distance, then the location and the villa are simply idyllic.
Everything is provided, right down to the cold beer in the fridge for when you arrive!

This is a great “get away from it all” place.
This was our third visit, Ed has done some great work around the place, installing a dishwasher and extra patio furniture. There’s a new suite in the living room making Villa Marco Carlos a real home from home. Lovely and quiet with lots of places around the garden to soak up the sun. The ice machine worked overtime for us this visit - the large fridge freezer (now in the kitchen) is great for cold drinks as well.
With new beds in one of the bedrooms - instead of bunks it will be more comfortable for the kids next time - and there will be a next time!!!
Very relaxing and a beautiful villa
Lovely villa welcoming pack of food and drink all amenities provided for a beautiful swimming pool had everything you need for a relaxing treat. If you go to the town there are plenty of places to eat a lovely choice of beaches. A lovely stay in the villa
Large family very pleased with the villa.
We arrived at the villa with 3 kids, 2 grandparents and 2 adults. There was no problem getting into the villa as Ray was very helpful and gave us the keys as soon as we arrived. The views were gorgeous and the area was serene and peaceful. It was the perfect place for a get away holiday to relax. The pool size was amazing and was very refreshing. The villa itself was very clean and the pool and garden were clean too. The villa itself had everything we desired and more, it was filled with utilities and they were all very useful. We've been travelling with the kids 10 years and my boys gave it a 10/10. The towns ALBOX nearby had everything we needed and were beautiful. We wish we took 3 weeks for it. We recommend this to everyone and would definitely consider coming back.
The Mediterranean beaches at Garrucha and Mojacar are no more than an hour away and the water park at Vera some 45mins away by car. Lying on the coast to north of the city of Almeria is the world heritage site of Cabo de Gata, offering magnificent coastal cliff views and stunning inland scenery where a wide variety of wildlife abounds. Located within the national park are a number of secluded little coves with crystal clear waters and beautiful beaches.
Located mid way between Alicante to the northeast and Malaga to the southwest, the villa is accessible from both these larger regional airports as well as the new Murcia International and Almeria airports. Depending upon your choice of airport, a 1 - 2.5 hour drive will soon see you relaxing by the pool. Car hire is essential, or you could do as we have done and bring your own vehicle. We would be more than happy to advise on transfers and times; ferries, and car hire companies. Please ask.
12Km to the hamlet of Oria by car and 25km to larger Albox. The beautiful monastery of Saliente with stunning views over the Almanzora valley is about 25km away
The beautiful little hamlet of Oria (10mins) has a couple of small supermarkets; bank, butchers etc and fresh baked bread can be obtained at the filling station. One or two restaurants can be found on the way into the center with its lovely tree lined square and basilica – a small market is held here each Sunday morning.
The bustling town of Albox is a 20min drive away, a larger and very popular market is held in the old town each Tuesday. This extends to stalls selling all manner of fresh produce. There are lots of pavement bars and cafés where cold drinks and tapas are always available at very reasonable prices. (In 2019 we pay; for a large beer 2€, a coffee 1€, a glass of wine 1.5€). Three large supermarkets are located in the new town as well as filling stations, banks and other specialty shops. Parking in Albox is plentiful and much of it free!!
To the north of Arroyo de Medina you will find some stunning views from the terrace of the Monastery at Saliente, as well as a very nice panoramic restaurant. Just off the main Granada road there are two spectacular National Park areas as well as the pretty towns of Chirivel and Velez Rubio. The city of Granada with the imposing Alhambra Palace is only 2 hours away and makes for an ideal day trip. Access to the Sierra Nevada ski area is close by and popular through January February and March.
Golf is available nearby at the Desert Springs Resort, Valle de Est and Marina Golf courses. More details are available and introductions can be made if required - please ask.
A visit to the world heritage site of Cabo de Gata, to take in its magnificent coastal cliff views and stunning inland scenery will take you on a very scenic drive indeed. Passing through Olula del Rio, the road take you through and over the fabulous scenery seen from the front terrace of the villa. Passing Mount Tetica; the highest peak in the region, you drop down and pass Mini Hollywood near the town of Tabernas, made famous in the production of many “spaghetti and paella” westerns including; A Fist Full of Dollars and a Few Dollars More. Here you can spend time on the recreated sets and see live shows where the likes of Clint Eastwood and Yul Brynner once filmed.
