House in Sletten, Humlebæk, Zealand, Denmark - Peaceful Location, 2 Minutes Walk From The Beach, In A Beautiful Harbour Village
- english, german, danish
About Else Thomson
My brothers and I have owned the property for 6 years and inherited it from my mother, who owned it since 1995, when she inherited it from her parents with whom she jointly bought it in 1972. We have spent many happy times there both in summer and winter (both with snow and without!) The house is extremely peaceful and idyllically situated. A day spent lazing at the house or in the garden, or swimming at the local beach 100m away is low key and relaxed, or you can take a trip into Copenhagen or Elsinore for sightseeing or shopping. When you come, please don't forget to sign the guest book too!

Why Else Thomson chose Humlebæk
We inherited the cottage, so have had many happy years of experience of the area. It is less than an hour's drive from Copenhagen airport, and 2 hours from Roedby, with the car ferry to Puttgarden in Germany. Sletten is an old fishing village with a sailing harbour (and a good fishmonger, supplied partly by local fishermen), full of thatched cottages. There is a local sandy beach perfect for families, with a bathing bridge in the summer and shallow, calm water stretching out at least 100m into the sea. Within 20 mins' drive or train ride are Elsinore (Kronborg, good shopping and restaurants), Fredensborg and Rungsted / Horsholm, with good local museums including Karen Blixen's house. The internationally renowned Louisiana gallery is a 20 min walk, and Copenhagen is 1/2 hour's drive.
What makes this Cottage unique
The cottage is warm and cosy in the winter, and opens up in the summer. It is 5 mins' drive to local shops including 3 supermarkets, and excellent local bakers, butcher and greengrocer. It is easy driving distance or train into Copenhagen or Elsinore. The cottage has 3 bedrooms, a sitting / dining room and a kitchen, with a conservatory for use in the summer. There is a lovely wood burning stove in the middle of the house which is perfect for cooler weather. Surrounding the house are gardens and terraces for meals and playing outside.

The perfect cottage in a wonderful setting - and half an hour from Copenhagen!
Our first trip to Denmark, and a cottage chosen for its location near to Copenhagen but with a touch of the sea. The cottage is undersold by its description and photos - the setting is beautiful, sun glinting off the Øresund in the morning, a lovely cottage garden with multiple sitting out spots (yes, even in October!) and a sun room for eating and relaxing. The wood burner kept us toasty warm in the evenings and the kitchen did its job perfectly. A short stroll away are the beach and the harbour, perfect for an early morning wake-up. With great local supermarkets and the quick and comfortable train into Copenhagen, it’s hard to imagine a better spot from which to enjoy the area - and the Louisiana is a wonderful art gallery and a lovely spot to visit to have so close. The owners are very helpful, too! Just check you’re happy with the bedroom arrangement (all explained in the details - there are no unpleasant surprises!), book and enjoy!
An extremely charming place
The property is at least as beautiful as presented in the pictures. Perfectly located, nicely furnished, full of charme. We (2 adults, 2 children) spent three lovely days in autumn. A lot of sights are nearby and easily reached by bike (Louisiana, Helsingor, Fredensborg) or by Public Transport (Copenhagen). We can recommend the place without hesitation and would like to come back.
cosy, characterful cottage with lovely sea views in a pretty Danish harbour
We spent a relaxed week, walking, cycling and sightseeing. We visited nearby Louisiana, an exceptional art gallery with extensive gardens by the sea, great for adults and children. We went to Helsingor and visited the castle and harbour with the impressive maritime museum and great street food hall. We cycled to various beaches and enjoyed a day on Hornbeck beach. A wonderfully family holiday.
Cozy cottage and wonderful view!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The house is lovely and very comfortable. The sunroom has beautiful views of the sea and the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee or a good book. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend staying here. We are already trying to plan our next visit!
Nice house lovely location
The house was clean and comfortable and ideally located. Booking process could have been better had to chase confirmation and then arrival instructions no linen or towels on arrival despite paying for these. However after a couple of phone calls they were delivered.
Dear Shaun, our apologies for this - a mix up at our end. Glad it was sorted out in the end.
Lovely cottage in a beautiful old village with wonderful views
We had a lovely peaceful family stay in this gorgeous cottage which is just a few hundred yards from a lovely sandy beach and which offers beautiful views across the rooftops to the sea and Sweden beyond from the comfortable sun room.
Copenhagen is an easy train ride from the nearby station. The Louisiana is within walking distance or a very short drive and is an absolute must. Another highlight was the Viking Ship Museum at Roskilde.
The cottage is very well equipped. We had a slight hiccup on arrival because the sheets and towels we had booked had not been left in the cottage, but a phone call to the very helpful owner got this sorted out within half an hour.
All in all, we were very impressed. We had a lovely time and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Denmark and this cottage in particular.
The cottage is 200m from the local beach, Peder Mads Strand. This is a very popular local beach that is sandy, and has a bathing pier during the summer. The water is extremely calm, and is shallow a good way out (200-300m) so is generally very safe for children. There is also a good ice-cream stand there during the summer!
The nearest airport is Copenhagen airport. This is approximately 60km from the cottage, mostly on motorways, so it takes approximately 45mins to drive to and from. Alternatively, the train goes from the airport direct to the local station at Humlebæk in slightly less than an hour, which is 15 mins' walk from the cottage.
The nearest seaport is at Elsinore (Helsingør) with ferries to Sweden. Esbjerg, with ferries to Harwich (UK) is approximately 330km away and about 3 hours' drive away.
Nearest shops are 1km away in Humlebæk on Gamle Strandvej, or in the Humlebæk Centre (2km driving, 1.1km walking).
There is an outstanding and well known modern art gallery about 2km away, Louisiana.
Fredensborg Palace is 11km away (20mins drive)
Helsingør town is 11km away (good shopping, local restaurants, old town) and is where Kronborg is (Hamlet's castle).
Copenhagen is 40 mins by train or about 30-40 mins drive south (about 30km).
The Karen Blixen house in Rungsted is 10mins drive.
The nearest main shops are 1km (approx 15 mins' walk) away, west of the railway. There is an outstanding butcher here (meat and cheese, and all Danish open sandwich toppings imaginable), a good cheesemonger, a nice greengrocer and an excellent baker. On the other side of the railway (2km drive) is the Humlebæk Center with 3 supermarkets, the post office, a second branch of the baker, chemists, greengrocer, Nordea bank, etc. There is also an excellent fishmonger at Sletten harbour, called Fiskehuset.
Sletten has a very good restaurant called Restaurant Sletten, which is run by the same people as Formel B in Copenhagen.
Other good restaurants nearby are:
Restaurant Mikkelgaard (8mins drive)
Cafe Hyacinth in Helsingør - good for Danish lunch
Cafe og Restaurant Madam Sprunck in Helsingør - classic Danish cooking for lunch or dinner
Other restaurant recommendations on request!
There are 3 petrol stations in Humlebæk, 2 on the Gamle Strandvej near the shops and 1 on the way to the motorway Humlebæk exit.
There is a lot of information about things to do in the house.
Interesting places to visit include: Louisiana the local harbour, the palaces in the area including Kronborg, Fredensborg (grounds only except in July), the local towns especially around the coast are very pretty.
In Copenhagen, some popular attractions include:
Tivoli - just opposite the main train station, this is one of the oldest (and most beautiful!) permanent pleasure gardens still in existence. It includes theatres, restaurants, and rides for all ages.
The Little Mermaid statue, and the surrounding Langelinie park is very scenic
Strøget is the longest pedestrianised shopping street in the world and has many good shops and sights around it (eg the Round Tower), ending in the Kongens Nytorv square and Nyhavn, a classic old harbour with many good bars and restaurants.
Cycle hire - nearest is in Snekkersten (about 5km, 2 train stops) - see http://www.helsingor-cykeludlejning.dk
