About Colm Breathnach
Colm, family, friends and volunteers have restored these houses themselves over many years, and are now focused on creating an eco-camp site in the forests below the villas (well hidden and distant from Prunecchio) - do take time to come and visit us - we are five minutes down the road on the walking route to Castiglione. The picture shows Colm and Dasha, a volunteer from Russia, upon completion of art-work in the barn nearby.
Colm Breathnach purchased this Villa in 2001
Why Colm Breathnach chose Castiglione di Garfagnana
Villa Prunecchio is ideal for those who wish to chill out, enjoy nature, the pool, forests and mountain views, excellent restaurants and gorgeous walks. It is not a good choice if you plan on visiting cities in Tuscany as we are a good 15 minutes up a windy mountain road, and an hour from Lucca and from motorways.
What makes this Villa unique
Prunecchio is set back in time and has the feel of being isolated and private, whilst at the same time being part of an ancient hamlet and wonderful elderly neighbours who always have time to chat and advise on old techniques of cultivation, building, folklore etc. You can also walk to both Chiozza and stunning Castilgione di Garfagnana, winner of the Borghi piu belli della Toscana award (most beautiful small town in Tuscany).

A glorious rural retreat
The house was large and comfortable, in the most beautiful setting. The swimming pool, trampoline and table tennis plus yard cricket and football gave everyone happiness from ages 79 to 2. It was great.
A rustic & beautifully restored property in a mountainous and beautiful non touristy area. Great natural garden with pleasant pool. An enormous outside table set under dense shading & large enough for our family of 15.
We had a brilliant holiday & loved both the property and the area suitable for exploring on foot or by car.
Just returned from my holiday at this lovely house in a truly stunning location. Seven adults, four children and an infant all accommodated very comfortably in the spacious houses. We arrived from our first week near Montepulciano and thought that couldn't be bettered (its's gorgeous there) but we're blown away by this place. On our first morning the valley below was a sea of cloud as in the owner's photo. Beautiful. Hot weather all week despite the elevated location, so we could swim in the wonderful pool and look down on the valley below. The pool is not quite deep enough for head-first diving but perfect in every other way. The huge table by the house competed with the poolside table for the meals and wine location, when we weren't eating out in the delightful, atmospheric restaurant in Chiozza. Table tennis and trampoline were a great bonus for children and adults alike.
There are some locals who live quite close to the houses, but the pool is far enough away for them not to have been bothered by the sound of pool fun, I hope.
Lucca is about a thirty to forty minute drive away and is a real gem of a place. Wonderful.
I would recommend this property without hesitation. Uniquely beautiful.
Beautifully restored home in jaw-dropping setting
Prunecchio surpassed my expectations - a group of 12 of us spent a week here as part of celebrations for my 40th birthday, and everything about the villa, the surroundings and the people could not have been better. The villa is beautifully restored, with plenty of space to relax, and the views of Garfagnana are amazing. After the initial birthday celebrations, we all had a wonderful holiday. The only thing to note is that you need a car if you want to get around easily - the very small town of Chiozza is a steep 20-minute or so walk (albeit, a scenic one) but when you get there it's worth it as the restaurant serves some of the best food I've had in Italy, and at good prices. The walk (downhill) from the villa, through a forest, to the medieval town of Castiglione is also a must-do, but again, the 45-minute climb back is not for the faint-hearted. If you want to travel further afield, then Cinque Terre is only 1hr 30 mins by train. But even if you just want to shut yourself off from the world, then Prunecchio is the perfect place to come to come, crack open a bottle of wine on the terrace or by the pool, and marvel at one of the most stunning regions of Italy.
Schönes Ferienhaus in ruhiger Lage
Villa Prunecchio is 1.5 hours from Pisa Airport by either. car or train. For directions and other info see end of this text.

A haven for those who like walking along forest tracks, medieval trails, through chestnut forests and in a setting of breath-taking beauty. A peaceful hamlet set back in time where locals are still very much in touch with the land and forests around them. There is a pizzeria in Chiozza (1.2 km) which attracts food-lovers from far and wide who enjoy the summer breezes, extensive views and excellent value. There is also a local shop with most basic supplies, a mobile shop which calls to Prunecchio on Tuesdays at 11:30. The restaurans of Il Pozzo, Lo Sfizio and Il Castello are a short drive away, and Risorante Il Belvedere a tantalising 1.5-hour walk away (30-minute drive) in Sillico, across the valley and visibile from Prunecchio.
The entire Garfagnana is a wonderland of forests, streams, medieval trails and villages, and reaches up into the high Appenine mountains. The hamlet of San Pellegrino (1,500 metres above sea-level) is only a ten-minute drive away with a wonderful ethnographical museum, great restaurants and wonderful walks of varying duration along the Appenine ridges.
Directions to Villa Prunecchio & useful information
From Pisa Airport follow signs for Autostrada and take the A12 north towards Genova.
Continue on the autostrada for approx. 15 minutes until the turn off A11 towards Firenze – take this road.
After a further fifteen mintues you will see a turn off to Lucca Est – take this road.
Drive into the centre of Lucca and you reach the ringroad around the walls of the town. Continue clockwise around the walls until you find a sign for Castelnuovo di Garfagnana / Abetone / Barga – take this road SS12.
Keep following signs for Castelnuovo – you need to keep your eyes peeled. About 30 minutes on this road, and just 200 metres before you arrive at Castelnuovo, take the first turn right off the roundabout – which is a new tunnelled road by-passing Castelnuovo. It is signposted Orrechiella in brown.
This new road is about 1 km long. At the far end take the first exit off the roundabout and keep going straight for about another kilometer. You will pass two supermarkets on the right – handy for shopping on your way up.
Shortly after the supermarkets there is a fork up to the right sign-posted Chiozza. Follow this road uphill for six kilomtres to the village of Chiozza. At Pizzeria La Grotta turn left, downhill, along a small side-road. Keep straight on this road, ignoring signs to Campo Sportivo / La Mossa / Pianatagliata. After exactly 0.7 miles (approx. 1.1 kilometres) you will pass a hand-made sign announcing Prunecchio. Exactly 100 metres after this sign ther is a turn to the left. This side-road ends after 100 metres, where you may park your car. The house (with wisteria) is visible from here – turn left at the bottom of the steps.
Our English-speaking care-taker Andrea lives nearby. He will have left the door unlocked and the keys on the dining room table. His phone number is 0039 3486618942 and he will call to see you on the evening of your arrival or the morning afterwards.
Please help yourselves to herbs and vegetables in the gated garden beside the house.
The password for the 2GEXT and 5GEXT is prunecchio.
Please fold down the green umbrella by the pool each evening or on windy days otherwise it will break.
There are several fantastic walks starting right from the front door, with Castiglione being the simplest and most spectacular. It takes just under an hour to walk down, a bit longer to walk back up (400 metre ascent). Ask the caretakers for directions to the start of this walk. Remember when hiking around Garfagnana in the summer to always wear hiking boots and stay on paths.
