About isabelle denne
I am mother of two wonderful children, and married to an Englishman. I am French. We used to live in the UK, and moved back to France in 2000. In 2003 we bought this lovely home in the foothills of the Pyrenees. In 2011 we moved as a family to Provence, because there is a wonderful school for our children. This has given us the chance to rent out our home as a holiday gite. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. All the families who have rented from us have said how much they appreciate the quality of the house and the relaxing holiday it creates.
isabelle denne purchased this Farmhouse in 2003
Why isabelle denne chose Escou
We bought this house simply because the area is beautiful. Standing on the "Boulevard to Pyrenees" in Pau, just 20 minutes away, we looked at the mountains and said - "wow, we must live here, its fantastic". (We found out later that Napoleon had said that this same view was one of the most stunning views in France.) Our house is in the friendly village of Escou, 20 minutes from the elegance of the city of Pau. The village is at the entrance to the Vallee d'Ossau. Full of the wonders of the natural beauty of the Pyrenees; One of our favourite activities is to hire a donkey, pack up a tent and some provisions - and set off for a walk for 2 or 3 days in the wilderness of the mountains. It is truly amazing.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Close to the mountains it is easy to recharge. You can walk out of the front door and enjoy wonderful relaxing walks in the local woods and valley. River kayaking is available. A day at the beach - the gloriously clean and invigorating Atlantic coast is just one hour away by car. Biarritz is a great city to visit. Day trips to the Rioja region of Spain, or any of the many attractions of the Pyrenees are all available. In the winter, the nearest ski resort is Gourette. A fabulous family friendly ski station with recent easy access. It is perfect for a day trips and family skiing.

A lovely, well-equipped property, as described. Interesting area and lots to do; also relaxing.
We had a lovely 2 weeks in late Sept./ early Oct. weather was good; even got into the pool a couple of times. The house had everything we needed to both be active and relax. It’s an interesting area and the Pyrenees are beautiful for hiking and biking. Nothing was crowded.
I am very happy to hear that you enjoyed la Maison des galets and the Pyrenees. It is true, September is always a beautiful time to come and the weather is always great in september , we call it, l'été indien .....
So thank you for choosing la maison des galets and i wish you both a great year ahead...
Enjoying Béarn area in a lovely farmhouse close to Pyrénées
We spent three weeks in the quite village of Escou, enjoying good weather and the nice pool. The house is spacious, well renovated and stays cool during warm days. Activities in the area are multiple and you won't get bored. Pau is just 35 minutes away and 10 minutes for Oloron Saint-Marie. A bit further but still possible in a day trip, we went to Biarritz twice to enjoy the waves of the Atlantic. In Béarn we loved all the local products from the farms in the surroundings: cheese, yogurt, honey,... and of course, the good bread of the bakery in Ogeu-les-bains, 5-7 minutes away. All in all, some very good vacations for all of us (without mentioning the Football World Cup in Pau, together with 20 000 others...). We definitely recommend this place.
Great stay at La Maison de Galets.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property which is very comfortable with a lovely garden and pool. From the windows at the back we could see the Pyrenees foot mountains on a clear day. Luckily the weather was very good and we had great walks in the Pyrenees. It was a wonderful holiday. Thanks Isabelle.
Thank you very much, i am very glad to know that you enjoyed la maison des galets and the Pyrenees. It means a lot to us. Thank you.
I wish you all the best .
Enjoyable stay at Maison des Galets
We had a very enjoyable stay at Maison des Galets. It's a charming old property full of character. It was spacious and well equipped and very comfortable, with internet as a bonus. The house has a large garden and a pool and is very private and peaceful.
It's in a very small village so shops are a few miles away in the nearby village of Ogeu, although there's a lovely cheese specialist within walking distance.
The Pyrenees are spectacular although if you want to go on the small train its best to book in advance. Lourdes was a lot better than we anticipated and the castle there is interesting.
There are some spectular caves at Grottes de Betharram which is not too far away, well worth a visit.
We'd certainly go back as there was far too much to get round to seeing in a week.

Thank you so much for your kind message, it does mean a lot to me to know that your holiday was a success, and you enjoyed staying at la Maison des Galets. As you said there is a lot to do in the Pyrenees and a week goes very fast. So, it will be my pleasure to welcome you again in the near future at la Maison des Galets. Once again thank you .
All the best to the family
Our family of four spent a relaxing two weeks at La Maison des Galets. The house is situated in a peaceful village with a secluded garden and great views of the Pyrenees.
Full of character with WIFI and a well-equipped kitchen, the house is the perfect base to explore the region.
A trip to the Grottes de Bétharram, driving up the Col du Tourmalet with lunch at Le Schuss and the Fiestas de San Lorenzo in Huesca (Spain) are all highly recommended days out.
Coupled with picturesque walks around Escou, lazing by the pool and eating our evening meals on the sun dappled patio made for a fantastic family holiday.
The owners have provided a wealth of information on the local area and Maddy the house keeper was a very friendly and patient with my schoolboy French!
Thank you so much for your review we are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed la maison des galets and the mountains the Pyrenees .
Wish you all the best
Charming house withe garden and pool
We had a lovely holiday in Escou. The house is situated in the quiet village, and within a 25 min drive away from the mountains. Though the weather wasn't fantastic, we could make all the excursions we had planned (mountains, lac d' Arouste, St Jean de Luz, Tarbes, Pau...). The water in the pool didn't get warm enough, because it was mostly cloudy. That bothered the children a bit, but they dived into it anyway :)
When we arrived at the house, the housekeeper was still busy. She was very friendly ans showed us the property. The house is spacious, the kitchen and bathrooms are well equipped. The garden is bigger than we expected, since the pictures on the web didn't show the property at its best. The beds were comfortable, but the wooden floors on the first floor had gaps between the boards (old house), so the house was rather noisy. It didn't bother us, but I can imagine it could be a problem for other families.
The gardener and neighbour Pierre was very friendly and helpfull. When we had a problem with the electricity, he immediately arranged for an electrician to fix the problem .
The owner is also very friendly and handled everything correctly.
Thank you. For your warm and honest feed back. We are very please that you had a nice time .
The glorious Atlantic ocean is one hours drive away through the rolling countryside. Glorious beaches from Biarritz to Hossegor, the coast is world famous. With beautiful villages just inland from the coast, this Basque region of France is a must visit for a day or overnight stay.
Pau airport 45 minutes.
Biarritz airport 1 hour 15 minutes.
Bilbao port in Spain 2.5 hours drive.
Toulouse airport 2.5 hours drive.
Oloron St Marie is 7 km away.
Pau is 23 Km away. Both well worth visiting for restaurants and walks.
Lourdes is 1.5 hours away for a day visit.
Waterfalls and high walks of Pyrenees are between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours away.
There is a wonderful local cheese shop at the entrance to the village selling world class "Brebis" cheese from local producers. It is a must try, and the owner is very friendly.
The village of Ogeu, 4 KM away has one of the best bakeries in the region.
Jurancon wine is the local speciality and world famous. We prefer the dry, and the fruity is a wonderful aperitif. The village of Jurancon is just 15 km away on the road to Pau.
Oloron has all the main supermarkets, banks, chemists etc. There are some good quality restaurants.
Pau is a little more elegant and up-market with wide boulevards and shopping areas.
river kayaking is available through the Oloron tourist office and the trip down the river well worth doing.
Our favourite activity is to hire a donkey or two, load them up with our tents and food and wander off into the wilderness for 2 or 3 days hiking. Ask for "les Petits pas" at the tourist office. They will provide you with walks - either guided or not as you wish.
