About Sandy St John
I live in England with my husband Jon. We have two married sons and 4 grandchildren. When we retired, we wanted a project and to spend more time in France which we love. We 'escape' to France whenever we can.
Sandy St John purchased this House in 2012
Why Sandy St John chose Villetoureix
We first fell in love with this part of France 35 years ago when we made the first of many visits to friends who had bought a property in Lusignac. We just loved the peace and tranquillity of the beautiful countryside and visiting the many delightful towns and villages and sampling the local cuisine. We always wanted to buy a property in this area and finally had the opportunity in 2012. After much searching, we finally bought Le Paillere (the Hayfield). We have had 6 brilliant family summer holidays with the grandchildren and plan to have many more.
What makes this House unique
Without a doubt the garden and swimming pool. All kids love a swimming pool and spend hours each day splashing around and having fun. We love the style of the property and the fact that there are 2 downstairs bedrooms and a bathroom which makes it suitable for elderly visitors. The property underwent substantial building works on the first floor in 2013 to provide 3 large bedrooms, all en-suite plus of course the 2 ground floor bedrooms. In 2014 a fully fitted kitchen and utility room were provided and in 2015 we had a large terrace built at the rear with a new large dining table for 12 plus settees for lounging. We love the peace, tranquility and seclusion to just wander around and do exactly as we please, particularly long, lazy lunches in the garden, followed by a swim and sunbathing.

Beautiful house with everything you could need
Definitely 5 stars! We had a wonderful time at Le Paillere and would recommend it to anyone visiting the area. It's a beautiful house and so spacious that a large group of us fit easily. Most importantly though it is so well kitted out for guests, especially families, it had everything we needed and more to sleep children and toddlers, and cook family meals in the large kitchen.
Sandy was a pleasure to correspond with about the booking and was incredibly accommodating. Thanks Sandy!
Thank you Jack for your lovely review. I’m so glad you and your family enjoyed our house and everything it had to offer.
This is a beautiful house and the owners have created a perfect holiday haven. They have obviously put a lot of thought into furnishing and equipping the property, we couldn’t think of anything that could have improved our stay. The garden and pool complete this piece of Heaven on Earth.
This property is excellent for all age groups, our party ranged in age from 6 years old to 74 years old. The house is superb, beautifully presented and comprehensively equipped. We have rented several properties in France previously and this house is easily the best, it is set on a large plot with a very welcome swimming pool for hot sunny days.
The booking process was easy and efficient with quick and friendly responses from Sandy so altogether an excellent choice for a multi generational family holiday.
Fantastic family holiday home
We had a lovely family holiday. Three families ranging from 10-72 and we all had an enjoyable stay. The area is so quiet and calm. The pool nice and big (the 10 year old spent a lot of time there!). Shade for the hot weather in the beautiful garden.
As a plus this was the best equipped kitchen we've ever stayed in - the drinks fridge a very welcome addition.
Really hope we have a reason to stay again.
(Finally, communication with Sandy leading up to the holiday was so good and helpful - made me super excited!)
Recommend for future holidays.
Beautifully appointed. Everything you need. Peaceful with wonderful facilities.
Beautiful house! We had a great stay!
We had a wonderful stay with the family in this lovely house. The house is big and comfortable. Nice bedrooms with good beds, three of them had a private bathroom. The kitchen is big and has all the amenities you can wish for. You can see, by the details, that the owners really love their house. The garden is immense. The kids spent hours building huts in the little forest in the back of the garden while the adults enjoyed drinks and each others company by the pool. Thank you Sandy and John for a wonderful week in the Dordogne!
Thanks very much Stephanie for your lovely review. We are so pleased you and the family enjoyed staying at our house.
The famous beach at Arcachon is approximately 2 hours away. However there is a 'river beach' on the River Dronne at okAubeterre (15 minutes drive), officially listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. It's great fun for children with a swing park, diving board, sandy beach and beach café. The village itself has much to offer the 'culture vulture, together with wonderful cafés and restaurants. The Lac de Jemaye with windsurfing, canoeing, sandy beaches etc is about half an hour away. If you like horses, a visit to Brantome Police Horses is a must. Its a wonderful 'retirement' home for ex Metropolitan police horses that have been injured in the course of their work or come to the end of their working life. It's set in acres of beautiful countryside and apart from enjoying the horses, you are provided with a wonderful cream tea. Kayaking on the Rover Dronne is great fun especially as you can stop off and swing from a rope over the river. The kids love it.
The property is situated about 1 hours drive north of Bergerac airport (flights with Ryanair, FlyBe) or 90 minutes from Bordeaux (Easyjet, British Airways). Car hire is essential. We are 500 miles from Calais, an early crossing finds you sitting with a glass of wine in plenty of time for dinner (approximately 8 hours).
Riberac to the south is about 5 minutes by car and provides all your everyday needs - supermarket, boulangerie , butcher, banks, restaurants etc. Fabulous market every Friday. Verteillac is a charming village about 8 km to the north with a selection of small shops, cafes and restaurants including boulangerie, boucherie/charcuterie and Merlauds, the most interesting shop you could wish to find. It sells everything from a packet of biscuits to a ride-on mower. Saturday morning market.
There is a bustling, traditional French country market every Friday in Riberac where you can buy the most wonderful fresh local produce. A visit to Brantome is a must, one of the most beautiful historic towns of the region. Situated on the river, it's about a 40 minute drive and a lovely place to spend the day, looking at the magnificent Abbey, browsing the interesting small shops or sampling the wonderful traditional cuisine in the many riverside restaurants. Then there is the canoeing which is great fun for children and adults alike. A wonderful area to explore whether on foot or by bike.
