About William Wilding

Hooks Barn is owned by a Potter and a Comedian – Joan and William. We both went to art school, Joan studied ceramics, and William studied performance art before spending 25 years as a comedian. Joan now teaches pottery and William paints and mows the lawn ( NB;- not at the same time).

We spent 3 years converting Hooks Barn into a beautiful holiday home. Although a builder did the roof, with electricians and plumbers drinking endless cups of tea, the hard graft was done by us.

Hooks Barn is attached to the far end of Hooks Cottage, which is our home. But your privacy is paramount and we will not bother you unless you request something.

William Wilding purchased this barn in 1980

Why William Wilding chose Ross-on-Wye

Brilliant location. There are forest walks right out the door, so if you arrive with supplies its possible to park the car, and not use it again. On the other hand there are also plenty of things to do within a short car ride.

What makes this barn unique

We live next door. So we are here to welcome you and show you around. Your private area in our garden has a great view of the countryside, and is a great place to watch the sun go down.

Plenty more details on our own website (visit link at the bottom of the page) Outside: French doors lead out of the barn onto a patio/BBQ area. Other: Covered outdoor area - so even in light rain you can still be outside if you wish.

Warm, homley all you need for a relaxing break

  • 5 of 5

Greeted with a smile, shown around and told how things work. On the table some flowers, two chocolates and two bottles of local cider (nice touch). Cottage was warm in fact we turned the heating down. Country side around was beautiful, only a short walk before you could loose yourself in the forest of dean, nice views from cottage and garden looked nice although weather a bit cold to sit out, it was early Feb. Local store in Lea had all the essentials and a few good pubs, try The Penny Farthing lots of excellent food. Will be going back. Many thanks as a good week was had.

Lovely rural location

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much for our stay in Hooks Barn. We had an excellent week. The accommodation was perfect for two, with all the amenities we could have needed. It was a cozy, relaxing retreat in beautiful surroundings.

William was a friendly host who welcomed us and showed us around. There were books, maps, games and dvds available. The cider, chocolates and flapjacks provided on arrival was a lovely touch, as was the vase of freshly picked flowers from the garden - in December!

A cosy retreat in a great location.

  • 4 of 5

We have had a lovely stay at this property, it was restful and thoughtfully kitted out as well as being warm and cosy. A lovely retreat to return to after exploring this beautiful part of England.

We hope to visit again in the not too distant future. Thank you also to our welcoming hosts Joan and William.

Cosy little barn cottage

  • 5 of 5

We were greeted by the owner of this lovely cottage. He showed us around and made us feel very at home. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything from pots and pans, tea towels, washing up liquid even ! There is a fridge, oven, microwave and kettle. A little treat of bottles of cider, chocolate and flapjack. The sofa is lovely and comfy with a TV with dvd and various films and even games. A small kitchen table just perfect for two. Up some wooden stairs is the bedroom (comfy double bed) and ensuite bathroom with built in shower. The window looks out onto the garden with lovely views beyond. Nice little features like the little stained glass windows, a cute cat on the stairs banister and a bat hole where bats used to come into the barn. I hasten to add there is a small window there now so no bats flying in now lol. Outside the cottage is your own private gardens with a table and chairs just outside the French doors. There are other garden areas too where we sat drinking coffee watching the horses in the adjoining field. There is a folder inside the cottage with alsorts of useful information about where to eat and lots of local walks amongst other info. Even a pair of binoculars in the cupboard. We especially liked the cosy feeling of the cottage and extra little touches like very nice hand wash in the bathroom and shower. The cottage is adjoining the owners home so they were easily contacted if you needed anything at all but also they were appreciative of our privacy. Overall we had a very relaxed couple of days and would definitely highly recommend a stay here.
