About Paul and Christine Swailes
We are two retired teachers who have enjoyed living and working in North Devon for more than a quarter of a century. We love walking, photography and the great outdoors and have yet to exhaust the potential of this area.
Paul and Christine Swailes purchased this House in 2006
Why Paul and Christine Swailes chose Ilfracombe
We love Ilfracombe and we always have. We have worked in the community for years and think it has so much to offer. As far as the house is concerned it was the views which sold it to us. Waking up and looking out across the Bristol Channel never disappoints - the view changes every day. When we had a family the big house was great and now grandchildren are on the horizon it will come into its own again!
What makes this House unique
This is a comfortable family home. It is well equipped with everything you could or would need to make your stay special. Over the years the needs of our family have changed and we have found that this area has been great at each and every stage. from bucket and spade, rock-pooling, crabbing, and paddling in the sea to skate boarding, climbing, surfing and coasteering - it is all here and more. It is just a short walk to everything in the town so you do not need to use the car while you are here to shop, eat or be entertained!

Well equipped and extensive facilities
Would be pleased to recommend to others
Thanks for your review and recommendation. One set of linen was not up to our normal standard so our cleaners requested another set which arrived later in the day. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Great house in central location. All generations enjoyed their stay from 2 year old to 86 year old
Property had everything we needed as we w ere celebrating a 60th birthday .
The view from the second floor lounge was beautiful.
The owners were very accommodating and even went out of their way to source an extra cot.
Delighted you enjoyed the house and that you and your family had a good holiday and birthday celebration. The house lends itself to multi generational groups with lots of space to spread out while still being under the same roof!
Gorgeous, spacious, family house in Ilfracombe
What a fantastic holiday we all had in The Georgian House, we being a large family ranging in age from 60 to 2 years old. We had a lovely welcome from Paul and Chris, by way of a cake, card, flowers and a bottle of wine, along with some basics, such as tea, coffee, milk. The house is fantastically well equipped throughout and has so much space. We all loved seeing Paul's artwork throughout the house, which fit so well, and took advantage of the extensive book collection, both reference and fiction. The master bedroom was great, so comfortable, with a fabulous ensuite, but everyone was happy with their rooms. No shortage of showers or toilets!
The view from the front of the house, looking out to sea, was gorgeous and afforded us spectacular views of glorious sunsets.
The location of the house is very hilly, with a steep walk down into town - and an even steeper walk back up if carrying bags! But it's truly lovely. Good restaurants and shops, and so many things to see and places to visit. We all loved Damien Hirst's 'Verity', but understand she's a little controversial! A walk up Capstone hill was a must for the youngest member of our party most days. Lovely views from the top and another beautiful statue, of Katie - such a sad story but a very lovely memorial.
There is just so much to see and do around Ilfracombe, and further afield in North Devon, and the Georgian House is a beautiful place to stay if visiting the location. We would all very much like to return. Thank you Chris and Paul for being such fantastic hosts.
Thank you for your review. Paul and I do everything we can to make a stay at The Georgian House a stress free, comfortable and memorable one. We are so pleased you all enjoyed your holiday and look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
Absolutely beautiful house and location
We stayed at the Georgian House at the end of June for 4 nights and loved every second of it. The location is perfect, taking 5 minutes to walk into the town and some really nice cafes and restaurants nearby (the Terrace is lovely). It is also ideally located to travel into Woolacombe and other nearby towns.
The house itself is beautiful with plenty of parking to the rear. It is well decorated and has lots of little homely touches, including a home made lemon cake on arrival. We spent a lot of time in the garden which is secluded, and in the drawing room which offered amazing views of the sunsets on an evening.
Chris and Paul were super friendly and easy to communicate with, and made everything about the stay very easy, and the house is excellent value for money.
We would highly recommend the Georgian House, and will most definitely be returning!
So glad you had a good time at The Georgian House. We try hard to ensure everything is as perfect as can be for our guests realising that your holiday time is precious. The sunsets this week, and the glorious weather were a bonus! Looking forward to welcoming you back in the future.
Fabulous house with amazing views perfect location for a wedding at Tunnels Beach
This house has everything you could wish for home from home, lovely places to visit
Woolacombe was our favourite the beach is just stunning would definitely go back to this part of the country. Thank you Paul & Christine great time was had by all!!
So glad you all had such a good time. Another positive for The Tunnels too. I hear the sunsets were spectacular during the week too.
Beautiful house, lovely owners - and the best chocolate brownies ever!
We had a great stay at this well- equipped, spacious and warm house with plenty of room for everyone to be together or have a bit of "quiet time" when needed! Even though it rained for some of our stay it didn't spoil our holiday - there's plenty of little towns to explore nearby and loads of really good pubs and restaurants to try. The welcome pack provided was really good, including a bottle of wine, and a cake stand of the most delicious brownies - they had to be home made!
There are lots of books and games around, a lot of thought has gone into making this a real "home from home" - and the views over the sea are amazing!!
The only things I would mention (and in no way did it spoil our time in the Georgian House, but may be useful for other travellers) is that with 3 medium size cars and a Range Rover, parking was very tight! Also, our family are all "morning showerers" and that was difficult as the water pressure was a bit tricky and the shower in the top rooms rarely worked, so it meant staggering our showers and using other bathrooms. However, Chris and Paul did their best to resolve this and, again, we managed fine.
A great house, really thoughtful and helpful owners, and a brilliant holiday!
Thank you for such a great review! We are so pleased you and the family had a good week. With 4 showers, dish washer and washing machine the water pressure can take a bit of a hit unless there is some staggering of use, Glad we managed to sort it between us and I will certainly mention this to future guests.

Ilfracombe has something for everyone and a week’s stay has photo opportunities around every corner.
Take a trip down to the harbour to see Damien Hirst's 'Verity' and while away an hour to people watch in one of the cafes or wine bars on the Quay. For the children there is a sandy beach at low tide, the aquarium, or crabbing off the pier, and of course the penny arcades are always a bit of a holiday treat! A pony trap or the land train can be a fun way to see the sights. Check out what's on at The Landmark Theatre, the cinema, or one of the many pubs which offer live entertainment. The Tourist Information office at The Landmark and the 'Visit Ilfracombe' website will provide more information on all festivals and events. Fore Street is renowned for its choice and variety of restaurants and there are many other eateries dotted around the town. Ilfracombe is a creative centre. A large number of artists live and work in or around the town. As well as art galleries on the High Street, seafront and around the harbour their work is exhibited at festivals and events during the summer season. A great souvenir to take back from your holiday. For more active pursuits why not try your hand at surfing, pony trekking, quad biking, coasteering, or simply walk the coastal path and drink in the beautiful scenery around the North Devon coastline. For those wishing to venture further afield a trip to Lynton and Lynmouth will not disappoint. Known in Victorian times as the English Alps the Lyn Valley offers excellent walking and is the gateway to The Exmoor National Park. No visit to the seaside would be complete without a boat trip. You can pick up cruises of varying lengths from the harbour or for the more adventurous a day trip to Lundy Island aboard the Oldenburg comes highly recommended.
What next? Maybe a day at Combe Martin Wildlfe Park, or Exmoor Zoo or The Milky Way, or Watermouth Castle, or The Big Sheep, or Tarka Tennis. Maybe a week is just not long enough!
