Cosy rural retreat-large garden-fishing, walks & lots to do nearby-farm produce
Chris is the owner of the property and trout fishery and is helped by his wife Ellen. We enjoy the peaceful surroundings we live in and consider ourselves very privileged to live here. We live with 3 dogs and 2 horses, 6 chickens, 2 pygmy goats and 9 Close Wool Devon sheep.
Ellen purchased this Cottage in 2002
Why Ellen chose Stoodleigh
We bought the fishery as we love the quiet location and the convenience to get to the rest of the West Country from here. The valley is rich with wild life and everyday you can see Exmoor Red Deer, Badgers, Foxes, Buzzards, Heron, Kingfishers and every songbird you can imagine. And yet if you want to get to the coast the beach is only 45 mins drive or if its a walk on Exmoor that's 20mins. If you are craving the city life Exeter and Taunton are 40 mins and Bristol just 75 mins.
What makes this Cottage unique
One of the many benefits of staying at Bellbrook is the Trout Fishery on site. Please visit our website for full details but if you are an experienced fly fisher or fancy learning then we have all the facilities you will need including tuition and equipment hire. In addition to the fishing we have beautiful walks, abundant wildlife, a stunning night sky and cosy pubs all on our doorstep. The accommodation is located on one floor and is easy to access by those less steady on their feet.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Beautiful accommodation Great Fishing Super Relaxing
What a stunning place to stay! The frosty mornings around the lakes and the amazing night sky are worth a visit alone! Add in friendly and helpful hosts, beautiful accommodation and lots to do nearby and you get a perfect holiday at Bellbrook! We also enjoyed great fishing, seeing the animals on the farm and eating their delicious naturally bred lamb. Can't recommend enough. We'll definitely be back!
We had a great holiday at this property. The location was perfect for us, also quiet in a beautiful setting.
The property is set in a beautiful area and for fishing it's perfect, also plenty of scenic villages around to explore.
The grounds of the cottage are pretty and peaceful but a bit uneven and although there was a table and chairs outside there was no parasol, so sitting out in the heat of the day was out and later on the shade was welcome but the flies and mosquitoes were not.
Very rough entrance into the car park area and with an awkward turn on a slope so low cars could have a problem with grounding.
Unloading and reloading our vehicle was strenuous as all the luggage had to be carried about 150yds over the uneven car park and path with a gradient too.
Walking around the fishing lakes was lovely and interesting and we could see some of the trout in the water.
The cottage itself was quite well appointed and clean enough, however we found the two seater sofas rather uncomfortable with the low backs.
The shower was good however there was nothing to put soap or anything else on, and the bathroom lacked any hooks for dressing gowns or clothes.
Had my wife's sudden onset of back problems not occurred, and the really hot weather not been around, I'm sure we would have had a better week overall.
These small problems aside I'm sure we would consider going again though!
Thank you Adrian for taking the time to leave feedback and for highlighting all the lovely aspects that make Bellbrook so special. We must admit to being disappointed that we didn't get our usual 5 star review however we can't complain about a 4 star one I suppose!
We wish you had said as soon as you found some little things missing as we would have sorted them out straight away. Hooks, a shower caddy and parasol have already been purchased and put in the annex. Unfortunately the flies and mosquitoes are beyond our control.
We have already replaced one of the sofas in response to your comment and have some high backed armchairs on order as we want our guests to relax in comfort!
Please be reassured that no guests or fishermen have ever had a problem turning into the car park and we have all sorts of vehicles, including a beautiful 1960 Daimler, coming into the Fishery without incident on a daily basis.
We encourage guests to stop in the lane right next to the annex gate if they have lots to unload as it is such a quiet lane or to ask for help if they are struggling with mobility and are unable to manage the 75 metre walk from the car park.
We are constantly looking to improve on and maintain our near perfect record of 5 star reviews and if guests don't tell us what they need then we can't provide it so thank you once again and we hope to see you in the future.
Lovely, well equipped and very comfortable bed
Fishing was good and our dog, Rumour, had lovely walks.
Beautiful Rural Retreat
Lovely well equipped annex in a peaceful location. Very welcoming and helpful hosts who provided us with milk and a delicious home made bread loaf on arrival. The fisheries are not too busy with guests so you really feel like you have the place to yourselves. Friendly dogs and horses add to the country feel. The annex itself has everything you could possibly need.
Lovely Idyllic Setting for chilling & fishing with fab hosts
Recommend staying here , welcome pack was a very nice bonus - Thank you
Only downside is hot tub takes long time to heat , lacks a pump
Thanks so much for the positive review and for recommending us to others:)
We work hard to ensure a good welcome and overall experience and so of course it is very gratifying to get unsolicited positive feedback:)
It is true that the hot tub takes longer to heat in the Spring due to the water temperature dropping over night - but we hope this downside is offset by the knowledge that you are doing your "green bit" rather than simply flicking a switch and using yet more of the earth's resources. We are always happy to get the fire going for you while you are out:)
Special interest holidays:
The property is part of a well known Trout Fishing complex in Devon. Set in 40 acres with 7 lakes plus its own fish farm and two holiday rental properties - see E18482. The fishery attracts visitors all year round. We have all the facilities needed for those more experienced fly fishers or beginners with various introduction packages, tuition and equipment hire. The lakes are stocked with Rainbow Trout with 5 lakes being stocked with "normals" which weigh approx 2lbs + and 1 lake stocked with "specimen" fish which weigh in at 4 - 15lbs! Check out the photos here and on our website for more info at www.bellbrookfishery.co.uk
Situated in the middle of Devon there is access to numerous surfing beaches - North Devon (Saunton and Croyde) 55mins. South Devon (Bantham, Bigbury on Sea) 1 hour 20 mins.
We are also only 30 minutes away from Wimbleball which offers sailing and canoeing.
Bristol Airport is 1 hour 15 mins
Exeter Airport is 1 hour
Tiverton Parkway Train Station is 20 mins away
A car is needed.
Tiverton is the nearest well known town and is 10 miles away. The very characterful market towns of Bampton (5.5 miles) and South Molton (14 miles) are both worth a visit while the tea rooms in Dulverton (6 miles) are essential. We are also blessed with some wonderful country pubs that serve excellent food - too many to mention but starting at 2 miles away.
As well as all the nature and fresh air we provide on site, we are located in what is known as the Exmoor fringe. Many people visit the area to walk the moor and take in the views - it is still a truly wild area. It is also well known for star gazing and Exmoor National Park was recently designated the first International Dark Sky Reserve in Europe.
