About the property

Two Bedroom Renaissance Villa Castle surrounded by Artisan Botanical Rock Gard

Stone Hearst is a quaint French country estate perfect for romantic getaways, honeymoons and unforgettable vacations. Situated on 10 wooded acres on beautiful Salt Spring Island, which is described as one of the most beautiful settings in the Gulf Islands. The two bedroom house is reminiscent of a Renaissance era villa, and no detail has been spared. It includes full kitchen, 2 bathrooms including two person cast iron tub for two, balcony, wood burning fireplace with gas start, flatscreen TV and WiFi. The "castle" is surrounded by an extensive botanical rock garden which was created over the last 6 years by artisans from around the world including Italy, France, Germany , Japan, England, Scotland, Mexico, Southern California, Quebec City, Ireland and Spain.

It's buildings feature authentic Old World wood, stone and iron finishes which combined with extensive rock work, waterfalls, tiered and sunken terraces and fountains transport you back to Renaissance times. The aged wood work was created by artisans who have worked on many of the finest wineries and residences in Napa Valley and throughout southern California.

Stone Hearst is located just 20 minutes by air to Vancouver's Coal Harbour or Vancouver International Airport, or a scenic ferry ride from either Vancouver or Victoria.

Highlights include extensive rock gardens, a rose garden, solid 3" thick arched wooden doors, 12' vaulted ceilings, commercial stove with stone hood, over-sized stone fireplaces, water features and extensive trails on and near the property.

Terrific Host, Unforgettable Location

  • 5 of 5

This is an absolutely magical, one-of-a-kind property. We had our wedding here and it couldn’t have been more delightful. Our guests and ourselves were awestruck by the incredible detail and beauty of the house and gardens. It was truly a fairytale wedding in one of the most beautiful settings in British Columbia.

The owner Mark and his terrific team went above and beyond to make our day as special as it could be, helping us setup, plan and run the event smoothly. Everyone was kind, laid back and extraordinarily accommodating. Needless to say, we had a blast and are so grateful for our time spent there and the memories we made.

If you’re having an event, make sure to give Mark the details so he can assist you in making the most of your experience. There’s a lot that goes into this place and he is an invaluable resource and passionate host who can help make your visit just that much more spectacular.

We cannot say enough about how incredible this place is and highly recommend anyone looking to stay, in any capacity, to book here.

Eclectic French style home

  • 3 of 5

We had a very interesting stay at one of SSI's most unique homes. Booking the facility was somewhat tricky, as the owner was hard to contact and erratic about returning calls.

The home is tucked away, in a very private area of SSI's Norther region, a short drive away from Ganges, Walker's Hook, St Mary's Lake and Vesuvius. The gardens are quite spectacular and are tiered with natural rock. There are several bistro sets set up in little cosy spots, comfy lounging chairs as well as a huge hammock. The sunken garden is ideal for evening drinks. The home has a stunning fireplace and ample dry wood for roaring evening fires. The home is advertised as sleeping 6, however, there are only two bedrooms in the house, only one on suite and one only accessible via a pull-down staircase. In this bedroom, there is a small loft bed as well, but it's inside the bedroom itself and not suitable for couples. There is a third bed in a very basic garden cabin, 100 meters from the manor house, with temporary windows taped up with plastic. It's stuffy and dusty and the only window has to stay closed to keep the mosquitos out. The bed is accessible above the ceiling via a wall ladder, a risky climb down at 3 am. There is no bathroom nor toilet in this cabin. Only a long-drop outhouse and the woods. The kitchen is well equipped and there is a bbq outside. Chuck, the caretaker is very helpful and could troubleshoot situations like running out of well water. The cell signal is very poor in the house but the wifi makes up for its absence.

In summary, interesting architecturally and a relaxing quiet setting, but lacking in adequate comfortable sleeping quarters. The advertisement is misleading regarding the sleeping arrangements. Although the 10 acre property is fenced and has a large gate at the entrance, it's easily opened... We had a rather unusual visit from a lady wandering around in the evening, in the private area of the home, with her dog. After walking all around the property, she came to the sunken garden area, watched us for awhile before asking after the owner. In my opinion, the price is set too high, considering the lack of adequate comfortable sleeping quarters.

Despite the inadequacies, we had a wonderful family reunion and the challenges were met with optimism and solutions, rather than negative energy.

Truly amazing setting with great staff!

  • 5 of 5

Had a very relaxing time on Salt Spring at this magical place. The gardens are stunning, the house is like a miniature French castle and the staff were extremely helpful, especially Chuck, who made sure we had all we needed including firewood for our evening fires in the giant fireplace. Would definitely recommend to friends and family. (Could use a few more towels though :) ).

Beautiful, Well Appointed Country Home

  • 4 of 5

This is a unique and interesting place to relax while on Salt Spring. The photos are representative of the attention to detail to the French country home style. It is great for a family but would also be perfect for two couples. It really only sleeps 4 comfortably with one queen bedroom on the main level and one queen up very steep and narrow stairs to a comfortable loft area. There is an additional small area with a mattress that is fine for fifth person if its a child or teenager who isn't picky. The only shower is small and in a bathroom upstairs. The main floor has a large relaxing bathroom with a bathtub. The main floor of the house has a large well appointed kitchen, two excellent dining areas, a comfortable living room with a large TV, cable and internet. The outside gardens are incredible, with three great patio areas, all with comfortable furniture. The laundry is in a separate building so some might consider it mildly inconvenient but the washer and dryer are high quality. There were people working from time to time on the property but we found that to be of no inconvenience or imposition whatsoever. A garden like this requires a very high level of ongoing maintenance and there are a few projects ongoing to improve the property but the owner and workers were barely noticeable when we were in the house and never appeared when we were outside. In fact, the property is actually very private and quiet. Overall this was perfect for the relaxing family time we were looking for.

Beautiful European-style farmhouse surrounded by gardens and forest.

  • 5 of 5

This lovely, well-equipped house is on a country road a short drive from lake swimming and a longish walk from the beach. There are fountains, old stone walls, and gardens surrounding the house, which is a comfortable stay for 2 couples, with one bedroom and bathroom downstairs and another bedroom and bathroom (up a ladder--not for older folks or the faint of heart) upstairs. The kitchen in well equipped and well stocked. We really enjoyed preparing our meals from food we bought at nearby farmstands and the local market, and then eating them outdoors at one of the 4 patio tables while listening to the birds and the water in the fountain. Very restful place, with a helpful and generous host. There is some construction underway around the house but other than the piles of stones and other construction materials, we were not disturbed by any noise. When we experienced little snafus, such as the gas stove not working at first, the owner was prompt to respond. I highly recommend this unusual get-away for those who want to experience a taste of Europe on Salt Spring, not far from amenities, yet feeling distant from the hubbub of city life.

So impressed

What an amazing property StoneHurst Castle was ! The pictures simply don't do it justice. Mark was a gracious and informative host - it was obvious that he had a vision for his property and that he would see it through to its fruition. It was an absolute pleasure staying at StoneHurst and we look forward to visiting again soon !
