About Elisabeth Gates
We are Liz and Mick and moved from Surrey to Kingsbridge in 2003. The area was always special to us and when we decided to retire, it was the obvious choice. We purchased a lovely Georgian house in the town, and ran a successful B & B business for a number of years. Both our children and families followed us down to the area and we now spend time with them and our 4 grandchildren when we can. When not playing golf at Bigbury Golf Club we enjoy our lovely, peaceful, garden and the spectacular views over Kingsbridge.
Elisabeth Gates purchased this Apartment in 2011
Why Elisabeth Gates chose Kingsbridge
Having spent 8 years running the B&B we thought a move to a modern Eco property would be more appropriate to our advancing years. So in 2010 we purchased 10 Fosse Road, demolished the existing bungalow and embarked on building "Woodpeckers". Were we mad at our age? Yes, is probably the right answer! However, now the building is finished we can appreciate all the benefits of modern technology. We always wanted to stay in Kingsbridge and this property is in a quiet area has wonderful views and is in close proximity to the town, shops and restaurants.
What makes this Apartment unique
Woodpeckers is ideally located, in Kingsbridge, for exploring the whole of the South Hams, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There is a good bus service from the Quayside and The Rivermaid offers boat trips to Salcombe. There are many lovely beaches nearby and the nearest one is only a ten minute drive from Kingsbridge. There are also good golf courses in the area and tennis courts at the Recreation Ground. We have tried to cater for all your needs and provide all that is necessary for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is extremely well equipped and we offer free WIFI, Digital TV and SKY TV with Sports. . We have ample off road parking space and the accommodation offers external patio areas to enjoy alfresco dining. All the amenities of Kingsbridge are within walking distance.

Perfect place for discovering Devon’s delightful coastline
An immaculate apartment, with every comfort we could wish for.
Equipped to a high standard (including Sky Sport) we simply couldn’t find fault with it as a base for a very enjoyable holiday.
Our hosts Mike and Liz were welcoming and helpful, without being intrusive.
A perfect base for walking along the spectacular South Devon stretch of the South West Coast Path. And, after a long day of walking it’s just a short stroll to the cosy Dodbrooke Inn for excellent steak suppers. We would thoroughly recommend this property.
Very clean and most importantly a comfy by byes! Liz & Mike are lovely.
Love Kingsbridge as easy to get to other places like Bantham Beach, Bigbury and Dartmouth. Some great places to eat too! The Crabshell Inn and The Old Bakery. Highlight of the holiday was taking a boat trip to The Greenway - Agatha Christie's holiday home by boat up the river Dart. Also had a couple of really good sunny days sat on Bantham beach and Bigbury on sea. Would definitely stay there again.
Excellent Apartment to stay in. Beautifully presented.
Lovely Property beautifully presented. The owners Liz and Mick were the perfect hosts. Always there if you needed anything but left you in peace to enjoy your holiday. The apartment was spotless and extremely comfortable. Would thoroughly recommend if you are looking for a comfortable, peaceful place to stay. Plenty to see and do and Liz & Mick give great advice on places to eat. Though all the info you require is in the informative folder and the package of walks.
Thank you so much for your lovely comments about
your stay at Woodpeckers. Mick and I were really pleased you enjoyed your holiday in Kingsbridge and would love to see you again.

Very fine stay close to the sea
Kingfischer cottage is a part of the owners house with own intrance. It’s a new house with fine and stylish furniture and luxery bathroom and kitchen-corner. All is very clean and in function. We were pampered with new towels in mid-stay, and our litter was remowed dayly from the poarch. Outdoor facilities/garden is more average. Kingsbridge is a small but nice town by the estuary and close to the sea. Special recomended for walkers and beach-lovers. Nearby Salcombe is a gem, and the beach in Bigbury-at-sea is fine. Off course Dartmore is never far away.
Thank you for posting a review on Woodpeckers. It was good to hear you enjoyed your stay in Kingsbridge. We hope your long journey home to Denmark went well.

Lovely,spacious,spotless, modern,quiet,convenient for Kingsbridge,real home from home.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Woodpeckers, delightful apartment with everything you could need. Ideal location for Kingsbridge centre with its many shops and supermarkets, brilliant bus station and the Quay. Liz and Mick were the perfect hosts, always there if we needed them. The weather was very kind to us. We hope to visit again sometime and would definitely recommend to family and friends. Thank you Liz and Mick for letting us share your home.
Thank you Sylvia. It was a pleasure to have you and Frank staying in our apartment. It was good to hear you enjoyed your holiday in Kingsbridge and we would love to see you again some time.

Excellent apartment for 2 people. Comfortable living in modern surroundings.
The apartment is an annexe to the main property but is self-contained and private. The owners live on site and are very helpful without being intrusive. It is clean and comfortable for two people with decent sized rooms and a very comfortable bed. The shower is just like home! Our only criticism is that the location is very hilly and what goes downhill has to come back up so a car is essential unless you are fit. All in all we had great week and were very happy with the accommodation.
There are many great beaches within 30mins driving time including Bigbury with Burgh Island just off shore and walkable at low tide. Try a pint at the Pilchard Inn. Blackpool Sands is popular but there is a charge. Some local beaches offer free parking to National Trust members and a favourite is South Milton only a 15 minute drive from Kingsbridge. Salcombe also has lovely beaches.
If you want to see the area a car is not essential but recommended. However, a double decker bus ride to Totnes or Dartmouth from the town offers extensive views not available from a car. Exeter Airport is 1 hour from Kingsbridge and the nearest train station is Totnes (from London Paddington).
A favourite day out is a visit to Salcombe for it's shopping and spectacular scenery. It's about 6 miles and 15 mins in a car and can also be reached by ferry via Kingsbridge Estuary. Other places of interest include the historic town of Dartmouth with it's naval heritage(15miles). Totnes is 12 miles away and has much to offer including Dartington Cider Press. Dartmoor is 15 miles away.
Kingsbridge has a good selection of local independent shops and all the usual banking facilities. There are two main Supermarkets, Morrisons and Tesco.
The Tourist Information Centre is located on the quay and we can supply details of local restaurants and pubs. Whatever the taste, Kingsbridge has it !.
