This home is located about a block off a state Hwy. and the road from the Hwy. to our house is asphalt; so no gravel roads to travel. You can begin a hike from our house up the mountain to nearby forest service land, fish in our creek or walk to or begin a hike about a mile from our house that takes you to a “local” water hole. GeoFun Trek Tours, a guided tour company, is located a block away.

About Jay and LuAnn Van Hunnik
Jay and LuAnn have been married for over 40 years and are both retired Human Services professionals. They moved to the Black Hills in 1977 from eastern South Dakota because of their love for the beautiful Black Hills and all the adventures it held. We've lived in this location since 1979, living in a mobile home until we were able to build the home of our dreams in 1986. In 2004 we began construction on a large 3 car over-sized attached garage with a 1220 square foot apartment above it. This is where our daughter and granddaughter lived until the summer of 2015. We decided to begin a new retirement adventure by converting the empty space into a newly furnished and decorated vacation rental. We had great fun finding vintage treasures to add to the modern design for your enjoyment. We can't wait to share this beautiful space and location with travelers like us.
Jay and LuAnn Van Hunnik purchased this Apartment in 1979
Why Jay and LuAnn Van Hunnik chose Keystone
We were lucky enough to find an ideal location that was just off a main Hwy, with beautiful views, bordering Battle Creek and very close to forest service land on a dead end road. This property had been homesteaded by the previous owner we bought the property from. It was always our dream to own a piece of the Black Hills. We couldn't have found a more idyllic and serene location that is still so conveniently located, to raise our family and retire.
What makes this Apartment unique
We built our home to our own specifications to take advantage of the location and views. The apartment addition mimics the unique features of our home including vaulted ceilings, open concept and a spacious deck for outdoor living. Sharing the valley with a plethora of wildlife is an added bonus.

Wonderful Condo and really a perfect location
We have rented several VRBO properties in the past and this was one of the best. Very, very well maintained, great location and lots of extras. Muffins on the counter when we arrived, granola bars, spices, coffee, tea etc. The washer and dryer in the unit make traveling so much easier. Both bedrooms are spacious as is the living area, and the deck is a great place to sit on nice days. We saw deer in the field each AM and evening. Mt. Rushmore is about 15 minutes and there are several entrances to Custer State Park within easy driving distance. Devil's Tower is about 2 hrs away and the Badlands about 45 minutes. We ate breakfast in the condo every morning and cooked dinner on the grill several nights. While we did not get to meet Lu Ann, as she was away, Jay was a wonderful host. He gave us several suggestions for dining and activities in the area. We would definitely stay here again. Just be aware there are stairs into the condo so not suitable for anyone who cannot do stairs.
About the area: Custer State Park is amazing. The visitor center is well worth a visit. however most things close down at the end of Sept. so plan accordingly. We liked the mining Museum at Lead and the fish hatchery at Spearfish, which is more museum grounds than a working hatchery. The tour of Jewel Caves was great, but be aware there are a lot of steps. All of these are within easy driving distance.
Awesome rental - your home away from home
We had an amazing stay with Jay and LuAnn during our time in the Black Hills. The condo is beautifully decorated, spotless, and has every amenity you could possibly need. This is by far the best vacation home we have ever rented. Jay and LuAnn are absolutely wonderful hosts - extremely friendly and very helpful! There were so many small touches that really made us feel welcome and right at home...fresh flowers, a personalized welcome note, donuts waiting for us when we unexpectedly arrived too late to get to the grocery store before morning, and a binder with every travel brochure for the area you could imagine. A truly wonderful condo with the best hosts - don't miss out on this rental! We can't wait to return : )
Spotless apartment, beautifully decorated, amazing extras, and great hosts!!
WOW!! Jay and LuAnn have raised the bar! This little apartment is not huge, but it is PERFECT!! We have stayed at a lot of Vacation Rentals. This one is at the top. It was spotlessly clean, LuAnn has done an amazing job of decorating, and it was better stocked (kitchen, bathroom supplies etc.) than any VRBO we have ever stayed at. It is open and spacious with a real homey feel. In addition, on arrival we found fresh fruit, a coffee cake, hiking snacks, and two vases of fresh flowers!! For us, it was perfect. There is only one bathroom, so depending on how many you have in your party, that could be an issue, but for us (just my husband and I), it was no problem at all. If you are worried about being in an apartment above the garage - with your landlords down below, don't be!! First, we only saw Jay and LuAnn on arrival and departure, and second, they are a lovely couple and we would have loved spending more time with them! And their two puppy-dogs, Shadow and Maui! The location is great!! We saw deer, wild turkey and free range cows from our balcony. Also, we were close to everything! I would highly recommend Mt. Rushmore's 8pm lighting ceremony. Very moving. Definitely don't miss Needles Highway and Custer State Park - or Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument (awesome!!). Dinner at Powder House Lodge is a must! Great food at reasonable prices.
Perfect Home Away from Home in the Black Hills
What a perfect place to stay that I can't say enough good things about. Jay and LuAnn's hospitality goes above and beyond anything that I could have expected. They go the extra mile to provide fresh fruit, donuts, pan cake mix, and much more. The apartment is set up perfectly and is beautifully decorated. The deck is a perfect place to view the stars and to watch wildlife walk by. It is a great location for all the attractions. We hope to get back to the Black Hills we will definitely stay here again.
This is the place to stay if you want to do everything SD has to offer!
I can't say enough about this place. Jay greeted us when we got there and showed us around. Made sure we had everything we needed. They go the extra mile and had fresh fruit and donuts waiting for us along with a variety of breakfast items. Pancake mix, granola bars, muffin mixes, and cereal as well. Very clean place with all the extras. Deer and turkeys out the front every morning and evening. Great location to all atractions! We did hot springs, custer state park, wind cave, badlands and wall drug, reptile gardens, bear country usa, and much more all in a week. Our boys already want to go back.
FEELS LIKE HOME
We stayed in this vacation rental during 3 nights with 2 couples. Jay and Lu-Ann thought of everything for having all the comfort like at home. We also liked the decoration of the home! It was really perfect for us.
