Berkeley Craftsman, vegetarian home, 99% Walkability Rating

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,000 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 6 (two sharing beds and two single beds)

Two bedroom, cozy, comfortable craftsman

-A vegetarian/vegan home for years (please do not bring meat into the house for either cooking or storage. Eat whatever you like when out and about!). Eggs, dairy and bee products are fine, although you may enjoy trying coconut cream, nut or goat milks and cheeses as they are reputed to be generally better for digestibility..

- Staying in Berkeley is arguably nicer that staying in San Francisco when visiting the SF Bay Area. In the East Bay, the temperature is warmer by about ten degrees F than nearby San Francisco. "The coldest winter I ever spent was Summer in San Francisco." Mark Twain. The inversion layer causes fog which can be chilly, (especially in the summer). Berkeley is warmer, however many summer mornings have a fog that normally burns off by noon.

-Close to fabulous Fourth Street shops and restaurants, Bette's Diner, Peet's and the Apple Store in Berkeley's Oceanview neighborhood. One of the older neighborhoods of Berkeley, full of charming homes and long time residents.

-Easy access to buses (UC Berkeley and SF downtown), easy freeway access and a 99% walk-ability rating. A 10-15 minute walk (.9 mile) to North Berkeley BART (and SF morning carpool)

-We accept most pets

-Private Entry with mud porch and rear exit door to the yard

-Large living-room with a working fireplace, couch, and a couch that converts into a single bed.

-There is a playable upright piano

-Two bedrooms, furnished with double beds, desks etc. The bedrooms have plenty of light.

-Tiled bathroom- with separate shower and bathtub

-Large eat-in kitchen with gas stove, refrigerator, spacious sink, plenty of cabinets, booth benches, oak table, dishwasher, granite counter tops. Vegetarian cook books, toaster and includes pots pans, mixing bowls, juicer on request, crock pot, dishes etc.

-A front loading washing machine on site. There are a few folding racks to hang laundry to dry as well as a very small drier that fits less than half of a full load from the washer. Large appliances are to be used between 7PM and noon, to work with the solar array and utilities pricing systems.

-Street parking, no permits are required in this neighborhood. There is street cleaning - two days in the month, the first Monday and Tuesday each month.

- Owner lives on the property, in a private addition.

-Shared small sunny yard (garden- a work in progress)- do not consider the yard, as it is under development.

-No smoking in the home or on the property

-I just raised the pet fee as I had an allergic guest and had to pay $250 for deep cleaning to remove cat dander.

About Lisa Lewis Owner / Property Manager

A long time Berkeley resident who worked in the travel industry for years, and had the good fortune of International Travel. This has been my home for over 30 years. I raised my daughter in this home.

I live on the same property, in an adjacent wing, attached by a five foot common wall. There is a great deal of privacy, both auditory and visual, between the two wings, and we may never see, or even be aware of one another. However, if you seek local insights or information, please ask. As a former tour guide, I know the ropes.

My hobby is restoring vintage Mercedes Benz diesels. Thus the driveways are not available, due to my hobby, but I have a way to arrange (nearly) sure-fire street parking just in front.

Lisa Lewis Owner / Property Manager purchased this house in 1984

Why Lisa Lewis Owner / Property Manager chose West Berkeley

This is a cozy, comfortable, clean, well-appointed home.

This is a simple comfortable home, and a great basis for your stay in the SF Bay area. You may quickly access San Francisco by public transit (a bus is two blocks away, BART is .9 miles), and travel to UC Berkeley easily by bike or bus.

The house has a solar array for electricity, which reduces the electromagnetic radiation, which by many is considered harmful to health.

There is radiant heat, considered by heating speacialists to be the "Rolls-Royce of heating systems."

There is a playable piano, and room to dance around!

The area is easy access to grocery stores, although they are about half a mile away in any direction, there are smaller ones within blocks.

This home is a part of a Finnish settlement from the 1920's, and within a block, there are two lovely churches, by the architect, Charles Geddes, who built the chapel in Yosemite. There are several historical buildings around the vibrant neighborhood.

The owner lives on the property in an adjacent "in-law" and while she is personable and full of local information, and tourist tips (former member of the SF Tour Guide Guild and adventure travel maven), the house is situated in such a way there is no sound between the two wings of the house and a great deal of privacy. Unless you ask for information and wish to interact, you may never even see or hear her. You have the best of both worlds.

What makes this house unique

Four block walk to the shopping and restaurant/cafe district of Fourth Street.

The neighborhood is ethnically diverse, and a good representation of the Bay Area and California.

Many of the residents have lived in the neighborhood for years, and we like it.

It is a quick hop to San Francisco by bus, BART or driving

Lovely home, great location

  • 4 of 5

We, a family of three, including parents and a teenage child, stayed here for 3 days in mid February. We had a comfortable and memorable stay in this charming house, beautifully decorated with many unique pieces from around the world.

House is neat, homey, functional, and well maintained. The “radiant heat” system was more than adequate. Kitchen was well equipped, minus a microwave, which did not hinder our few meal plans, especially given the vegerian nature of the house.

Electronically speaking, WiFi was available but for duration of our short stay the password did not work. The TV is small and not a focus of living room.

The location is great with short walk to Forth Street shops and restaurants and a short car ride (or easy bus ride) to downtown Berkeley.

The host, Lisa, constantly went beyond all expectations to accommodate us inside the house as well as outside, including when she would give us personal, complimentary tours around the town. She is a gem if you want to know the area and its history, and she was always available to give us a ride to and from our destinations. (Having spoken to Lisa before our trip, we did not rent a car, and did manage very well).

In summary, this house will remain a great option for us when we return to Berkeley.

Lovely Well Equiped Berkeley Apartment

  • 5 of 5

We highly recommend this rental. Its very comfortable and well equipped and worked well for our family of four as each of our teenage children was able to have their own room. Lisa is very attentive and quick to respond to any queries or minor problems that might arise. It is is located near a very nice shopping district and is a quick bus or car ride from downtown Berkeley.

Amazing Landlord, Great Location, Wonderful Home

  • 5 of 5

Lisa, was so wonderful working with a group of nervous moms sending their 4 sons with Aspergers off to a new city for the 1st time. She was accommodating, answered all my questions so quickly, and acted like I wasn't a pain ;)

The boys said the house was super comfy, and close to transportation and when my son had a question she got right back to him. Much appreciated Lisa!

Thank you Lisa for being such a gracious host.

Owner's Response: The 4 lads were all charming and awesome! I hope they come again, and next time, they might enjoy the short walk to visit The Vivarium, to see the collection of reptiles and snakes. (I easily imagine 4 teenage lads as loving the Vivarium). They even stripped the sheets from the beds before departure! (certainly unexpected and thoughtful!). Certainly, you were not a bit 'a pain' as you wrote. They were all wonderful guests and I enjoyed meeting the parent that dropped them off, whom, as it turned out, had gone to the same High School as me and we share mutual acquaintances. Small world.

Very clean home, plenty of room for my family of five. Good location to the city, and to principle attractions in the area. Lisa was very helpful, and a warm and friendly host. We definitely enjoyed our time in Berkeley.

Owner's Response: Aw thanks! I sure enjoyed your sence of humor, I am still laughing at one thing you said just before jumping in your vehicle and heading to the Alcatraz night tour! Great family! And thanks for leaving the place so nice!

Great location and charming house

  • 5 of 5

This was a great "home base" for our visit with my daughter at UC Berkeley. We flew into Oakland, rented a car there, and saw all the San Francisco sites as well as spent a day in Napa. Staying in a house was so much better for the week than trying to cram into a hotel room, or even two. (And hotel prices in the area are generally more than this house!) Lisa was such a considerate host, asking us for feedback, making sure we had a parking space in front of the house, and truly wanting us to be comfortable and happy. We will definitely stay here again next time we come visit!

Many beaches-- best beaches- 35 min- 1 hour drive
Car: not necessary

Berkeley is famous for the University of California, bookstores, and beatniks. This "Foodie town" abounds with Cafes, Restaurants, Farmer's Markets and great grocery stores. The Oceanview neighborhood has many of all the above, within 1-4 blocks of my home.

Berkeley has wonderful libraries and bookstores, including used bookstores- something disappearing in many communities.

The UC Theater (Music Venue) just opened, with superior acoustics and sound, one of the best intimate venue to see great music on the West Coast. The brainchild of David Mayieri, a protege of the late impresario, Bill Graham (Father of the San Francisco Sound).

For lovers of acoustic music there is the nearby Freight and Salvage Coffe House with live music nightly.

Berkeley is located between the SF Bay and the East Bay hills. The park area per capita is one of the largest in the country. The whole top of the Hills is Tilden Park, and at the shoreline we have Cesar Chavez Park (kites and dogs) and The Albany Bulb, both of the later are built on landfill.

The Albany bulb, next to Golden Gate Fields (Race track) which boasts the vestigial "cliffs of Berkeley" is built on debris from the Cypress Structure Freeway Collapse from the quake of '89 and garden waste. Artists have appropriated the concrete slabs and painted a wide variety of artful worlds all along the man-made shore like, with an apocalyptic feel, this makes a great walk if you have a few hours to spare.

We are improving the yard and it is a slow process. There is no real yard access at this time. There is a park a block away if you have a dog who needs a walk or a kid who needs a park. Tennis and basketball courts and a Tuesday afternoon farmers' market at said park. Any booking for 2 weeks or longer needs a rental agreement signed.

This is a vegetarian house, and, while no one cares what you personally eat, we don't allow meat to be stored, prepared or brought into the home. So if you wish to eat animals, do it when you are out and about. Much of the world is vegetarian and they will appreciate a vegetarian kitchen. If you can be flexible about that and not eat meat in our home, we appreciate that greatly, Thanks
