About Valerie Walton
After taking early retirement we moved to Berrynarbor, where I maintain the property's and my wife runs a local Preschool. In 2003 whilst on holiday and out for a walk we first came across two old stone barns which had never been inhabited, apart from one that was a milking parlour. We bought them and with the help of our daughter who is an architect we have converted them into two beautiful homes.Today we live in one and rent out The Old Dairy as a fully modernised holiday home.
Valerie Walton purchased this Barn in 2003
Why Valerie Walton chose Berrynarbor
We had been holidaying in the area for 20 years and loved the location, we wanted to move somewhere that was large enough for our family to visit with lots of garden and room for parking, as they all enjoy surfing and outdoor activities, we enjoy the wonderful walks scenery and magical charm of North Devon and Exmoor. Berrynarbor is a charming picturesque village with a lovely 500 year old pub and a very well stocked village shop. We are just a 10 minute walk away from Watermouth Harbour where in the early 1980's the childrens T.V. series " Famous Five on an Island" was filmed.
What makes this Barn unique
The Old Dairy is a charming 500 old stone barn with lots of character and a large garden, however inside it has modern facilities spacious open plan living downstairs, which is great for families or groups of friends. It is next to a working farm with listed farm buildings set in beautiful Devon countryside. Woolacombe beach voted best beach in the UK is nearby, also Croyde and Saunton Sands all are great for surfing etc. Ilfracombe Golf course is a 5 minute drive away with amazing views over the sea. This property is exactly as described in a beautiful peaceful setting. It is really well equipped and comfortable - a great place to stay. It is in an ideal location as a base to visit some lovely places- we had great days out in Ilfracombe , Lynton & Lynmouth , Rosemoor RHS Gardens, Porlock, Exmoor and Clovelly . The Ye Old Globe pub in the village serves excellent food and is well worth a visit - a short drive -or good walk downhill there and a local taxi is available if you don't fancy the walk uphill back!
Would certainly recommend this as a place to stay and would love to visit again- Valerie and Trevor were lovely hosts and nothing was too much trouble - the cream tea waiting for us on arrival was a lovely touch and delicious!
Thank you for your review and so pleased you enjoyed your stay, we would love to have you back.
Ideal base in idyllic setting
The cottage was exactly as shown in the promotion and suited our family needs brilliantly. The owners were on hand to assist and had prepared a lovely welcome cream tea much appreciated by all! The short walk albeit down a steep hill to the village and the harbour were regular walks and we found it a perfect antidote to our busy home life - our dog was in seventh heaven...would love to go again!
Pleased you enjoyed your stay and would love to have you back.

Lovely cottage beautifully presented and well equipped in an ideal location
The Old Dairy, Berrynarbor.
We traveled from West Sussex, Surrey and West Wales for our week at the Old Dairy. It was everything that was promised and more. A lovely rural property with three en-suite bedrooms upstairs and a ground floor bedroom which is great for an elderly or disabled person.
The property is well placed for local attractions. We visited RHS Rosemoor, Arlington Court, Lynmouth, Woolacombe , Appledore. and Dunster Castle. There’s a supermarket a few miles away in Ilfracombe and a very good fish and chip shop in Coombe Martin.
On our arrival there were scones, jam and cream left for us by the friendly owners. We were also visited by the two cats and spent time watching the bats in the evening.
One evening we walked from the property down through the woods to the coast. On another occasion we walked down to Berrynarbor Village which has a well stocked community shop with a Postoffice Counter.
We would thoroughly recommend a visit to the Old Dairy and certainly intend to return for another stay.
Really great place to stay
The Old Dairy is an excellent property, modern with an old-fashioned charm. The bedrooms are warm and comfortable and there is plenty of space for a large group of people and young kids.
It's set in a peaceful location with some lovely walks nearby.
Top tip - don't turn left out of the drive to get to Ilfracombe - go the longer route. The route to the left is very narrow and twisty and you could be stuck for ages trying to get past cars coming the other way.
Thank you for writing a review and pleased you enjoyed your stay, the road to the left does get rather narrow and yes it’s better to go along the coastal road to Ilfracombe especially for the stunning scenery.
