|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
A quaint, quintessentially California beach cottage, built by noted Cambria watercolor artist and printmaker, Jo Werts. Designed to take maximum advantage of light, it is replete with huge ocean view windows, and high, open-beam ceilings, giving it a light and airy feeling.
It is simply but comfortably furnished with a King Size bed. It is decorated with some of Ms. Werts' works, and a number of other original prints.
The house is located on a hill overlooking Cambria's Marine Terrace, and affords spectacular ocean views from nearly every room in the house. There is a deck off the master bedroom with beautiful, white-water ocean views, as well as a more private, protected deck and garden in the backyard area. A 2-3 minute walk to the ocean bluff hiking trails of the East-West Ranch Openspace, the Harvey St. Beach, Lampton State Park and Wedgewood Tidepools.
I spent 5 nights here escaping the heat and stress of city living. I had an amazing time and love this special cottage. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes/cooking utensils/pots and pans. I cooked every night and had everything I needed - loved the outdoor grill. The living room is spacious and lovely spot to unwind after a long day of walking the trails and beach. There is a nice sized dining room table off the kitchen as well as another fold out table which I used to set up a small watercolor painting area under the large glass windows. The upstairs bedroom is like a studio apartment in itself with a couch area and amazing views and a deck. The upstairs bathroom is also nice sized. Overall the place has plenty of room for two people to spread out. The location can't be beat - empty lots on either side so you see deer frequently. It is a quick walk to the beach or Fiscalini Ranch with trials and amazing ocean views. The cottage was very clean and well kept - everything was in top working order. The floor to ceiling windows are amazing - each has a hardy blind for privacy and shade. Debbie, who manages the property, was very helpful and accommodating. I have stayed in several homes in Cambria but this will be my go to spot in the future. Highly recommend!
We just enjoyed our second stay in Cambria at the Artist’s Cottage. For two people the cottage is very spacious and is located in a wonderful location. You can walk to the coast and enjoy the walking through the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve. We enjoy how quiet and peaceful it is in the neighborhood. Sitting on the deck and watching the ocean while eating lunch and drinking wine is very relaxing and in the spring we were able to see whales breaching.
The house does have some quirks to it as other reviews have mentioned. Mainly the stairs and driveway are very steep. We bring our luggage upstairs via the outside stairs to the deck. On clear warm days the upstairs can warm up quite a bit, but we find keeping the slider open with the screen and having a fan or two on works well. When it gets foggy and cooler the main source of heat is a gas wood stove which does take an hour or so to warm things up. It is on a thermostat so you can leave it running at night if you want. For us the king sized bed (which is very comfortable) and the spacious well stocked kitchen are great features. Internet and TV work well and fast. Having a BBQ for cooking has been nice for us to grill steak on. Access to washer and dryer have been a benefit on both of our trips. The pictures on VRBO represent the condition and layout of the cottage very well.
We have really enjoyed our stays at the cottage and love the Cambria area, and have plans to return next year. As we discussed our rating we settled on 4.5 since there are quirks, but if one knows up front what to expect the cottage can be a great place to relax and unwind.
This was our first rental in Cambria. Our expectations included - a clean well appointed rental home, located in a quiet neighborhood, with walking trails nearby. The "Artist's Cottage" not only "met" our expectations - it exceeded them.
The house was located in a quiet neighborhood, which was frequented by does, fawns, and bucks. Walking trails were in close proximity to the house - the ocean was 4 blocks away and the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve was 8 blocks.
The house was clean, comfortable, tastefully decorated and had a "180-degree" of the ocean via the tall windows on the west side of the house.
The living room was located on the ground floor and it contained 2 comfortable couches, a gas stove, 2 rocking chairs, a flat screen TV/DVD and a half bath.
The kitchen and dining area - accessed by a 5-step staircase - were "open" to the living room. (I had "planned" on cooking all of our meals at the house but I was apprehensive as to whether the kitchen would contain everything I needed for "cooking from scratch".) I needn't have worried. The kitchen rivaled my kitchen at home - containing everything from "measuring spoons to service for 10".
The bedroom was located on the second floor, which was accessed via a spiral staircase. (A word of caution to persons over 6'2". Take care when "ascending" the spiral staircase - my husband struck his left shoulder on the wooden beams a few times. This is not a huge issue, but one worth mentioning.) The king sized bed was one of the most comfortable beds we had ever slept on. The bedroom was large and included a couch, dresser, large flat screen TV/DVD, desk and attached bathroom. The bathroom was clean, spacious and included plenty of fluffy towels, bar soap and liquid soap.
We highly recommend the "Artist's Cottage".
It was a pleasure to work with Debbie Berk. She booked our reservation and answered all our questions in a timely manner. Thank you Debbie.

We loved Cambria and had the pleasure of staying here for two weeks! The cottage was very clean and comfortable, close to town and beaches, just a perfect location in every way! We hope to stay here again.
This was my second stay at the Artist's Cottage. I found it to be just as lovely in the colder months as it is during the summer. There had been quite a bit of rain before I arrived as well as a few rainy days during my stay but there were absolutely no issues with dampness, pooling or smell - as a previous reviewer stated. The cottage is kept very clean and well maintained. Debbie - who manages the property - is very responsive to any concerns. This is the perfect place to watch El Nino come and go. It has a great location, amazing light and everything you could want for the perfect escape.
I stayed at the Artist's Cottage for 4 days while I was working on a job on the Central Coast. The cottage had everything I needed for a comfortable stay. The kitchen was well equipped and I loved grilling as the sun went down and enjoying the wonderful view out every window.
Before I left for the day, I enjoyed a great walk on the bluff nearby.
I have stayed in several of Debbie Berk's vacation rentals and they all have been top notch including the Artist's Cottage.
