Located 75 min. north of Santa Fe, Abiquiu Lake Casita is far from highways and noise, but for the sounds of birds and wind.
Our casita (small house) is set on 13.5 acres on top of one of the highest mesas overlooking Abiquiu Lake, with unlimited 360 degree views north toward the lake and Ghost Ranch and south towards the Jemez Mountains and Cerro Pedernal, the 10,000 foot flat-topped mountain that Georgia O'Keeffe loved to paint, making the mountain into an icon of northern New Mexico. Historically, Pedernal is a sacred site for Native Americans and local inhabitants.
You can soak your body in a luxurious HOT TUB after a day of hiking, reading, painting, or writing. Our casita was designed in the traditional adobe style, including a Kiva wood- burning fireplace (wood provided), pine hand-hewn vigas that help support the ceiling; tile floors with radiant heating; and thick walls to hold the warmth in winter and keep you cool in summer, walls hand-plastered in the adobe style; and Mexican antique furniture.
We added modern comfort throughout, including a modern and well-stocked kitchen, local art and track lighting on dimmers, and a spacious great room with a Mexican dining table that can be expanded with 3 leaves for art or writing projects.
To take advantage of the long and wide views across the valleys, we built two 'portales' (covered porches). You can dine on the north side while gazing down the valley and across the lake towards the red cliffs of Ghost Ranch, or you can bask in the warmth of the sun--even in winter--on the southern portale, as you look towards the Jemez Mountains and Pedernal. Both portales are furnished with a comfortable outdoor dining set. There's also a recliner and new gas BBQ.
Since there are no city lights to compete, billions of stars fill the night sky, part of the magic of New Mexico. Our favorite time for the hot tub is at night, gazing at the Milky Way and galaxies, frequently punctuated by numerous shooting stars; when it's not dark, moonlight bathes the rolling hills and desert floor.
Gentle warning: The views, the far off patterns of changing weather, and the warm coziness of the casita may make it difficult to leave the casita at all.
Abiquiu Lake Casita was featured in New Mexico Magazine, November, 2011.
We live in Santa Fe and are available to our guests by the hour.
We're located in an area called Piedra Lumbre, or Shining Stone, which you reach by taking Hwy. 84 past the town of Abiquiu for six miles, then turning west on Highway 96.
We are former college English teachers who simply love the southwest. We live in Santa Fe.
Scott Oury purchased this house in 2000
Having been in love with the southwest for a long time, we found this site in 2000 and it was more beautiful than any of the places we had seen--or have seen since-- during our travels throughout this extraordinary part of the country.
Peace, quiet, relaxation, endless views and walks, time to read and be creative. After that, we explore the villages, cultures and wilderness in and beyond Abiquiu.
The house sits under the spell of the Pedernal Mountain, a spiritual mountain in the area. My family loved the wildlife we witnessed including prairie dogs , jack rabbits, and coyotes. One sunrise there was the sound of an Indian flute and chants drifting up from the lake area. The house is very comfortable and sunrise and sunset simply breathtaking every single day. As a student at the Ghost Ranch it was a wonderful retreat from the sparse ranch accommodations, but it is a 30 minute trip back and forth. The kitchen really is well stocked in cooking supplies for a rental house. For a rural setting the internet and television connections excellent. Loved the daily visit from the neighbor's poodles.
Easy to visit Taos and Santa Fe for day trips.
My husband & I loved this place. It was beautiful inside & out. It had everything we needed for our stay. The kitchen was well stocked to cook whatever you wanted. The bed is comfy. Scott & Glynn were very helpful. They go out of there way to make your stay great. Thank you Glynn & Scott for being caring individuals. We will be back.
If you like the views of Abiquiu Lake and the red bluffs of Ghost Ranch, this is your spot.. We have stayed at 2 other VRBOs in this area and believe Lake Casita has the best views without a doubt... The Casita itself is well maintained and very "comfy".... Mornings and evenings were so relaxing... mornings with a cup of coffee and evenings with a glass of wine and cold beer.. we will be back...
The casita I well maintained and very beautifully decorated. The land was so refreshing for us, It was just a perfect fit. We've already recommending it to our friends and family. Thank you for sharing your beautiful casita.
This was the perfect place to rest and enjoy amazing sunsets. It was quiet, peaceful and relaxing, just what we needed.
This was our 3rd long weekend at the casita. Everything was great as usual. Nothing better than a nice long soak with a view. If you are looking for quiet solitude this is the place for it. We will be back next year. Thank you.
