About the property

4 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8. Attached apartment available for 9-14 guests.

Located in the heart of the Driftless region, this home sits halfway up a steep hillside overlooking meadows, forest and class A trout stream. The scenery is more like Colorado but with Wisconsin's lush greenery. Wonderful birding and wild-life viewing, eagle's nest visible across the valley. Fireplace, full kitchen, 3 decks,[one is an amazing "crowsnest"]. Brick patio in limestone rock garden, fire-pit Out door pizza oven. 4 bedrooms, 1 1/2 bath. Wood burning sauna situated at the edge of a rustic swimming hole, making for a bliss experience! Towels, spring water and eucalyptus oil provided for your sauna. Jetted 4 person hot tub on lower level walk-out basement. Foosball table in that area as well. Large open living area, dining area. with sunken seating area with wood-burning fireplace [we supply wood and kindling]. Bright kitchen with range, dishwasher and fridge. There are other features of the house and property which will make for a fascinating experience. We are developing a micro-winery on the property. In fact, the barrel room is in the basement of the house where you'll be staying. We have an additional farm nearby where we grow organic and biodynamic grapes for our wine. Cold climate gapes have a lot of potential and we all are just learning how to best vinify them. We also keep a large organic garden on the property where you'll be staying., with abundant fruit and nut trees, raspberries, asparagus, etc. We are also proud of the sustainability aspect of the farm as we have installed 3 types of solar systems, use organic linens and cleaning products, non-voc paint , recycled maple floors and beams from a timber frame barn as well as beautiful stone/ tile. This is a working hobby farm with very sweet draft horses used to haul wood and spread manure. We also have Scottish Highlander cows, heritage chickens and corgis!. We are 1/4 mile from Runge Hollow reservoir with superior fishing, ice fishing and canoeing. You may borrow our canoe. Vernon Vineyard Winery is just down the road to the west. A mile to the east is an Amish community with bakery and handicrafts. There is excellent hiking both on the farm and nearby as well as snow-shoeing and XC skiing. We have equipment for you. Viroqua is nearby with world-class dining [yes, really], arts, music, the coolest used bookstore, theater, music, wine bar, Farmers market and food co-op. Don't forget national award-winning Kickapoo Coffee [free cupping last Saturday of the month!] A few things to consider; there is no cable or dish TV but we do have a medium-sized screen and lots of great DVDs. Also, cell service is spotty at best. We owners, Chris and Ann keep an apartment on the lower level for ourselves. It is totally separate with sound insulation [not sound-proofing!], separate entrance etc. we also have a residence on our other farm where we often stay. We love to share this beautiful property.

We love pets and want to welcome them, but we would like to talk to you personally about the pet you bring. If you would like to bring one or more pets, call us to discuss.

Beautiful area for a get away

  • 2 of 5

The property was beautiful! The owners need to pay more attention to detail. The coffee maker did not work and the beds had stained linen and pillows on them. No microwave or hair dryer. They provided used bars of tiny pieces of soap in the bathrooms. The dishwasher was filthy as was the washing machine. We felt obligated to fold the items still drying in the dryer when we arrived at check in time and empty the dishwasher. There was no orientation material in writing everything was verbal. The owners came back the next day to "check on their wine making efforts". We did not feel welcomed when we arrived.....the kitchen equipment was sparse.

A Breathtaking Experience

  • 5 of 5

This chateau, nestled and secluded about 20 minutes outside of downtown Viroqua, is an amazing piece of property. I've been a regular "tourist" of the Driftless region in the Autumn of just about every year of my life beginning when I was a small boy, and so have a deep personal affection for this area. With my family having grown to a capacity that my grandparents' place in the town of Liberty (just outside of Viola) can no longer comfortably accommodate, we went searching for a larger place to stay for 2017. We discovered this - and MAN was it just about everything we needed to really vacation in style. The property is gorgeous, and stretches as far as the eye can see (or as far as we're aware of, anyway) and the home is spacious, inviting and classy. When staying here, you should bear in mind that the owners utilize this property for themselves and their business interests (they produce wine, procure honey from bee keeping, as well as an assortment of other agricultural pursuits) when not renting it out, and so signs of their residency can be discovered tucked away in various storage areas and off-corner rooms. That said, it's very humbling to be given the opportunity to stay at such a unique estate, where they not only step aside to let you enjoy their home and their extensive property, but also offer you a variety of amenities that are entirely uncommon to what would be common in this area. A wood burning sauna (which we examined, but didn't use, given that the weather this year was an unseasonable 90 degrees), a swimming hole and flowing tributary (if you've never swam in a natural body of water, do yourself a favor and do it here!), a hot tub in the basement (they had it warmed up and ready for us when we got there!), spacious interior design with a piano, an indoor swing, and an assortment of interesting books, decor and trinkets to use as conversational pieces - plus a view of an absolutely breathtaking star-lit night sky form any deck or patio you might choose to enjoy it from. Our only request: PLEASE mount even an amateur telescope to one of those bedroom walk-out decks. The sky at night there fascinated us beyond words, and having a telescope handy would have been positively stunning. Our biggest regret is that we never got to meet the owners (though I talked to Chris briefly on the phone one evening), and this wine I see other reviews raving about never found its way to us. Ah, well - maybe next year...

Comfortable stay in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We had the privilege of staying at Turtle Crossing for two nights and 3 days.

The welcoming house is large, airy and light, set in well tended grounds and beautiful flowers beds.

The view of the valley with "babbling brook" and opposite forest covered hills can be enjoyed from the large picture windows in the living and dining room.

The bedrooms were of comfortable size and the furnishings in the home was well appointed.

There is a wood burning fire place in the house and there is a fire-pit in the garden.

This is also one of the few homes in Wisconsin that boasts both a hot-tub and a sauna.

The sauna was a fair distance from the home, appropriately placed next to the stream and the swimming hole for an exhilarating plunge into the cold water.

We would love to return with more time to truly enjoy hiking and fishing in this beautiful area of Wisconsin.

Thank you to Chris and Ann for sharing this gem.

Great rural setting

  • 4 of 5

This was a beautiful home and setting. It is located far from the hub bub of everyday life. Very relaxing. The home was well equipped and meet our needs. We encountered snakes, crayfish and saw a deer. Great nature experience. The fire pit was one of our favorite hangouts in the evenings. My only negative is the kitchen could have been cleaner inside the drawers type clean. Also some ice cube trays would have been helpful.

Great for all ages.

  • 5 of 5

6 days of total fun! Our ages ranged from 5 to 66. We all had fun on the indoor swing and the kids spent hours in the stream. The beds were comfortable and there was also plenty of space to sit back and relax.

Using the pizza oven was a blast and now all 3 families want to build one!

Amazingly there were very few bugs, I saw only one mosquito and 4 flies in the house and with the amount the boys were in and out that is
