About Steven Palmer
Have been a native Vermonter for all my life growing up in Shelburne, VT. I am a civil engineer and we have two beautiful identical twin daughters. We are also operate a small family run sugaring operation called Shelburne Sugarworks in Shelburne, Vermont.
Steven Palmer purchased this Cabin in 1991
Why Steven Palmer chose Starksboro
It's a beautiful property and cabin to get away from it all and unplug. Close to Sugarbush and Mad River Glen ski resorts or just put on your hiking boots or snowshoes and start walking right outside the door. The original cabin located on the property had been built as a deer camp generations ago. In 2010 we decided that the original cabin could not be salvaged. We were determined to build something unique and without so much as a sketch on a napkin we began. With the help of family and many friends, we built the current timber frame cabin from scratch. Most of the timber used in the construction of the new cabin was harvested directly off from the property and milled at a local lumber mill. The construction of the timber framing was led by our friend Tom Tomassi who has been a Master timber framer for the past 30 years. The remaining construction was led by our friend Tom Welch "Griz" who was a 40 year carpenter. Tom told me numerous times that this was the neatest project he ever worked on. This project would never have been completed without the commitment and determination of many, many people but no more critical than Griz. Griz unexpectedly died of cancer before we completed this project and we named it "Griz Lodge" in his honor. It has taken us 5 years to complete and we want to thank all of our family and friends who pitched in and helped, what we have created is truly incredible!
What makes this Cabin unique
One of a kind custom timber frame. Incredible views, surrounded by two pristine mountain streams and thousands of acres of State and Federal forest land. Truly unique!

Cozy log cabin
We had an awesome stay at Steve and Joy's log cabin. They have a wonderful warm story about how they built the cabin and this warmth is carried over to how they treat visitors. They were very accommodating in their communications and even brought over some amazing maple syrup from their farm. Cabin is very private and has beautiful views. Kitchen is equipped with all the things you need. About 20 minutes to Sugarbush North and 25 to South peek. You do need to drive over winding paved mountain pass to get to there. We would stay there again in a heart beat!
Relaxing, well equipped property
This property worked perfectly for eight adults. We were concerned about the bunk beds but they are plenty wide and long for adults - even my 6'4" brother. The lodge is well equipped and worked well for my family when we traveled to Vermont for a funeral. Beautiful land, just far enough from Bristol to be isolated but convenient. Game room is great. My family spent many hours on the covered front porch. Highly recommend this property.
Sincere pleasure hosting you and your family!
Absolutely beautiful cabin in a gorgeous location.
We could not have been happier with our accommodations. We had a family of seven and found the property very well appointed with everything we needed. Great location with a beautiful flowing stream on all sides of us! Would definitely return again!
Great house for our family of 4. We probably had room/sleeping accomodations for at lease another 4 kids. As advertised. Went to ski. Can only imagine how nice that location would be in the summer. A little isolated (in a good way). With a little weather, it was about 20 minutes to Sugarbush. Owner was responsive. Place was very clean.
Spotless mountain perfection!
We took our whole family (8 people: 1 senior, 4 adults, one very tall teenager and two kindergartners) up to Vermont to celebrate my mother's 71st birthday the first week in October and this was the perfect spot to stay! The road to get there goes up and over a mountain that is VERY windy but the house is tucked in next to the entrance to the state park and has it's own tiny apple orchard! It was the perfect little cabin-beautiful woodwork, a great layout and sleeping in the loft in bunk beds with the kids made for some super special moments–and my mother got to sleep quietly in the lovely big bedroom downstairs! We made breakfast in the big kitchen, the kids played up and down the stairs and ran around outside and the shower was actually tall enough for my 6'4" nephew! The porch views of the foliage were stunning and the little brook that runs around the property made it as quaint as can be.
The house is close enough to some shops and restaurants (the Mad Taco was amazing! and we stopped into the town farmer's market) and only 45 minutes south of downtown Burlington and Lake Champlain. We were able to make day trips to fun places as well as relax and enjoy each other's company in homey-style.
The house was spotless, the linens were super soft and the mattresses were so comfy! You never know what you're going to get, but I've slept in hotels that weren't this nice. The kitchen had all sorts of small appliances, waffle makers and crockpots if you were staying longer–I could see it being a great house for skiers!
We didn't use the playroom downstairs–we had two very young kids and there were hunting photos and deer heads on the wall–which I'm not opposed to– but we just didn't think it would go over well with the littles! And on that note, we were afraid that the littles would be hard to bathe because there's only a shower and no bath, but the shower head has a handheld option and letting the kids spray each other in the shower instead of sit in a tub was equally amusing and got the job done :)
I would absolutely recommend this spot to others and maybe go back ourselves!
Great location away from it all! Each day we played a round of golf, one at Sugar Bush and the other at Cedar Knoll, then we came back to the house to drink, grill, shoot pool, have a fire and swap stories. I received many comments about finding such an excellent place and how perfect it was. Worth it 100%
