About Jim and Joan Stembridge
We live in Oregon, travel a lot, especially around the USA, biking, hiking, and photographing state capitols.
Jim and Joan Stembridge purchased this House in 1972
Why Jim and Joan Stembridge chose Pahoa
We inherited this home in 2014, the home Jim helped his parents, Rena and Ed Stembridge, build in 1972. We have lovingly restored it and improved it to bring Rena and Ed's dream into reality. We invite you to come share the Hawaii they knew and loved.
What makes this House unique
This home is central to all the attractions of East Hawaii: Puna, Hilo, the Hamakua Coast, Maunu Kea, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It is right next to none of them but the best are within a 45-minute drive.

Our stay at Pahoa-Pahoehoe Hale worked out OK. Beds were comfortable, didn't mind the Coqui frogs at night - they lulled us to sleep!!!! There was lots of equipment available for use; snorkel gear for six; bicycles for two, beach towels for 6, yoga mats, sun hats etc. Extra towels, sheets, bedding were in plastic containers and all labeled for which bedroom. Notes written by the owners were very endearing.
Nicely located for exploration on the eastern part of the island and the Volcano.
Worth the price.
Pros: Cable tv, good wi-fi, lots of amenities already there (bicycles, beach towels, ukulele, snorkel gear). House has everything you need.
Cons: Noisy dogs down the street. Overgrown plants in the driveway scratched the side of my car. Living in Hawaii Geckos area way of life. They do leave dropping around. Nights and morning were a little cool...for Hawaii. Some of us have sweet blood I guess so we got bug bites in the evening.
Helpful hint: Buy a couple gallon of water when you first get there and refill them for free when you dispose of trash at transfer station. True Value store hidden behind LDS church on Orchidland road has everything (and I do mean everything) you need. 5 minutes away. Has hot food, groceries, vacation items, etc. Went to Sure Foundation Christian Church. High energy, good message, very friendly. Take some of the reusable grocery bags with you when you go to the market. Some places will credit you 5 cents for bringing your own. Some places will charge you for grocery bag bags.
We are glad you thought our home was worth the price. Yes, there are dogs that cam be noisy at times. I am reminded that the earliest Polynesians brought the first dogs to Hawaii (along with pigs and chickens), so dogs have been part of the Hawaiian rural environment for centuries. The frogs are recent invaders, but not the dogs! And, yes, the driveway is long and narrow. I find that it is plenty wide enough, though, so backing in while staying near the driver's side vegetation works really well. If I get off-track, I try again! Dogs, vegetation, insects, frogs, geckos--it's all a bit of a jungle.
Thanks so much for coming to stay! - Jim and Joan
PS for future visitors: insect repellant and ear plugs are in the bathroom drawer!
We had a great time at Hilo. The property is conveniently located close to all major attractions within driving distance. The house is well equipped will all essentials and is well maintained. There is a lot of greenery around and a local farmer's market close by. Overall we have enjoyed all aspects of this rental.
EXTREMELY NICE PLACE VERY QUITE REAL IN THE WOODS FEEL
THIS PLACE WAS PERFECT FOR OUR STAY REMINDED ME OF STAYING IN THE WOODS WITH OUT ACTUALLY BEING IN THE WOODS JIM THE OWNER WAS VERY HELPFUL AND MADE MY TRIP EASY NICE LOCATION HIGHLY RECOMMEND STAYING HERE CLOSE TO EVERYTHING FOUND SOME NICE TIDE POOLS CLOSE BY ZOO IS CLOSE IT WAS PERFECT FOR TAKING MY MOM AND DAD AND FAM THERE ENOUGH FOR EVERYONE THANKS JIM
Five stars for value, truth in advertising, and excellent service!
This property is exactly as described, and the owners are responsive and helpful. This property is an excellent value for someone with a larger family who doesn't want to cram everyone into a hotel room. Further, the property was well-kept and well-appointed, with almost everything one could need for an extended stay (everything from pots and pans, to bug spray, to WD40, to first aid kits!). Literally my only suggestion would be a larger bed in the master bedroom -- I'm 6'4, so the queen-sized bed was too small for my wife and I -- but that's not "the property's fault" so to speak, it's just a suggestion which might help attract more guests. In any case, we stayed here for almost two weeks, and overall, we couldn't be happier with the property and the owners, and I would not hesitate to recommend this property to friends and family. Mahalo again for sharing your hale with my family!
Relaxing spot near lots to do for nature lovers
We have a lovely time here. House has everything you need and all the beach gear required.
Yes the frogs are loud, but they would be anywhere on this side of the island. We went snorkeling at the best rock pools around every morning. It suited us perfectly.
Centrally-located in Puna, near Pahoa, the adventure-capital of the US (according to Outside Magazine). A 45-minute drive will get you to an active volcano, lava flowing into the sea (2016-17), a thermally-heated tide-pool, the weekly festival at Kalapana's Uncle Roberts, snorkeling at the Kapoho tide-pools. the black-sand beach near Opihikao, or historic old-town Hilo.
