About james and laurie vogel

Laurie and Jim are both award winning artists. They raised two sons on this property and have lived in Petaluma since 1986.

james and laurie vogel purchased this cottage in 1989

Why james and laurie vogel chose Petaluma

We moved from San Francisco to Petaluma attracted by the historic west side. We were looking for a nice neighborhood with good schools. We fell in love with the rural setting situated conveniently close to downtown. Though we have looked, we have yet to find any place we would rather live. Now we would like to share our find with others.

What makes this cottage unique

Very close to Petaluma downtown, yet our property has a "country" feel. Forested with heritage oak trees and 200 foot tall eucalyptus trees. Red tailed Hawks, humming birds and of course crows abound. The koi pond is a soothing constant. Very quiet - no ambient traffic or hotel bar noise. It all makes for a setting with the accent on nature within walking distance of downtown.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Cool cozy getaway

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was clean and well appointed. A bottle of wine and fruit were waiting for us. Don't go grocery shopping until you check out what's there. Jim answered all our questions and was very pleasant. Walking distance to downtown. We were there during the heat wave and the cottage was very comfortable even in 108 degree heat.

Owner's Response: Mary and Peter were the best of guests. In spite of the challenges of an unprecedented heat wave they were upbeat and actively enjoyed our lovely part of Northern California. Though their stay was not long, they quickly found their bearings and took smart advantage of our proximity to San Francisco, the California coast and Sonoma County's famous the wine country. Of course it is important to us as hosts that our guests respect and care for our property - which Peter and Mary did perfectly - but it is more rewarding when our guests newly discover the charm and beauty of the area we have called home for more than 30 years.

Cozy Comfort in Chilly Petaluma

  • 5 of 5

Located in a quiet, yet convenient part of Petaluma this cozy cottage was a taste of home away from home. The weather was chilly during our stay, but we always came home to a warm cottage at the end of our day. The refrigerator was well supplied with essentials for your first few days as well as a bottle of wine to enjoy by the fireplace. Our hosts, Jim & Laurie, could not have been more accommodating. We even had a Christmas tree decorated with candy canes which delighted our granddaughter. We are looking forward to another stay when next we visit Petaluma.

Great Location, close to the center of Petaulma!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at The Oaks in Cherry Valley.

The owners were helpful when we arrived explaining how everything worked and quickly assisted with the gas heater to obtain heat for the cottage.

The owners had supplied the cottage refrigerate with orange juice, eggs and mild, which made the beginning of our stay comfortable.

The kitchen was well equipped with coffee maker, toaster, blender and microwave.

A great place to relax and explore Petaluma and its surrounding sites.

We loved it!

  • 4 of 5

Clean and comfortable and easy access to downtown Petaluma. Our hosts had everything ready, easy check in, stocked fridge (eggs, milk, bread, condiments etc.) The bottle of wine that was left for us was great! Plenty of towels and added items (toiletries, pantry items, paper products etc.) made it feel like a home away from home.

We enjoyed our stay at The Oaks!

Beautiful and Quiet Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at The Oaks for almost 7 weeks while we were in the process of moving and looking for a new home to purchase in Sonoma County. This was a thoughtfully furnished and well--appointed place to stay. We were so comfortable and Laurie and Jim are perfect hosts. We arrived to a beautiful bottle of wine, a bowl of fresh fruit and freshly cut flowers. Everything was spotless and it was extremely quiet. We wished we could have stayed longer!
