This is a place that 'time forgot.' Think 19th century Vermont transported to an island in the ocean! The cottage has Internet any time you want to get back into the 21st century! Crow's Nest cottage is an easy 20 minutes by ferry off the gorgeous Maine coast. Fully renovated, Crow's Nest cottage is located at the northern, rural end of legendary Islesboro Island, considered by many the most beautiful of all Maine islands. The cottage faces the Meadow Pond, a quiet, lush wildlife refuge. It sleeps 4 comfortably. Many quiet beaches are minutes away by car. The cottage has a marvelous, large deck. This is a SMOKE-FREE home. NO PETS PLEASE.

Islesboro is a very quiet vacation spot. If you are looking for tranquility, for peace and quiet, and a "low-key" vacation spot, you'll love Islesboro Island and Crow's Nest cottage. If you are looking for lots of restaurant options, movie theaters, amusement parks, bars, fast food, shopping, and crowds, this is NOT a place for you.

Our Meadow Pond Neighborhood: Crows Nest cottage is located “up-island” and looks across to the 20 acre, fresh water, Meadow Pond, a neat wildlife refuge for deer, birds, ducks, turtles, beaver, etc. You need a car on the island to get to the 2 small grocery stores, to the 2 restaurants and ice cream parlor, for speedy trips to local beaches and public playground, and to get to the ferry.

The island has hundreds of secluded and hidden coves and beaches. If you love the splendor of the Atlantic Ocean and wild Maine coast without droves of tourists, Islesboro is your place. There are dozens of secluded, beautiful coves and beaches -- both sandy and rocky -- within a 5 to 15 minute drive from the cottage. Or, pack a backpack and bike (or walk!!) to them....Explore them on foot or in a kayak. Pack picnic lunches and suppers and play Robinson Crusoe on your "private" island.

Please scroll down to the end to read more about our PAYMENT and CANCELLATION policies. We are now part of HomeAway's on-line booking and accept credit card payments.

Although we do not supply bikes or kayaks, they are available for rent on the mainland from a variety of companies. Our "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ) on our personal website provides contact information for these rental places.

Explore the nearby coast : The famous mid- coast Maine villages of Camden, Rockland and Belfast are minutes from where the Islesboro ferry lands, in Lincolnville. These villages have many shops, epic restaurants, great book stores, food stores, antique shops, public libraries, museums, and energetic waterfronts full of beautiful old and new boats. Schooners for day tripping are berthed in Camden Harbor. Drive a few minutes south from Camden to Rockland where you can spend several happy hours at the renowned Farnsworth Art Museum. The Farnsworth is home to the Wyeth Center, one of only two centers in the country dedicated to the three generations of Wyeths: N.C., Andrew, and James Wyeth.

About Giovanna and David Peebles

We are a Vermont family who are delighted to share our very special island cottage with you!

Giovanna and David Peebles purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Giovanna and David Peebles chose Mid-Coast & Islands

Islesboro Island is magical, a place that time forgot in the ocean. In 2005, we fell in love with this cottage since we knew we could fix it up into a perfect island get-away. We love its location on a breezy knoll, the privacy, the light that pours in from many windows, its spaciousness, and the large deck we built. We love everything about it!

What makes this cottage unique

Many of our guests tell us that Crow's Nest Cottage and Islesboro Island have given them one of their most relaxing, family vacations. There is something very special about our cottage and the island that slows down time and contributes to a unique vacation.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Giovanna and David were wonderful hosts, easily surpassing all other hosts we've encountered in our Airbnb experiences. Before we arrived they sent us a package of useful information about Islesboro, booked us a pre-paid roundtrip ticket on the ferry (!), and responded promptly and with great detail to our questions. The cottage itself is very comfortable, peaceful, and full of light and island charm. It is also well located on a beautiful spot across the street from a pond and very close to two of the island's best nature preserves. We loved the island and hope to come back again!

The most beautiful, relaxing cottage in a beautiful, relaxing place!

  • 5 of 5

When we are on the island we just simply slow down and relax. The cottage is so comfortable and contains everything that we might need. It's simply a lovely place to call our home-away-from-home. This is a favorite place on the planet. The owners work hard to maintain the cottage and to welcome you to a practically-perfect vacation week.

Butterflies, Sunsets, and the Strawberry Full Moon

  • 5 of 5

Nathaniel Hawthorne once wrote: Happiness is a butterfly...and I would agree. What a joy to see all the butterflies around the cottage this year. They fly in and out of the red geraniums and white petunias...we have been coming back to this comfortable and nautically themed island cottage for several years--a gem of a place!

This fully equipped cottage is your island home away from home. We love to spend afternoons at the beach (Turtle Head Cove) or if we time it right, on an island that we can walk to.. yes, walk to-- across a sandy causeway---we enjoy many hours on the deck with great food from Island Market and extraordinary wine and beer selections from Durkees--just down the road.

Winding down into island time is a gentle gift and one that settles around you like a soft light that shines on the young deer that appears just as the full moon rises and someone says---How about some strawberry shortcake? Just purchased at the market--grown on the island!

On another early evening we take a walk across the street and watch and listen and smile at our good fortune to have nothing else to do but watch the beaver swimming across the water, listen to the bullfrogs, and watch the turtles stick their heads out of the water-- by this little Meadow Pond, as a brilliant sun sets behind the trees, we remind ourselves once again, that if we slow down and appreciate the simple---great things are just in front of us!

An outstanding stay, as always

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time at Crow’s Nest, and when we arrived we were stunned to find that it looked exactly as we had left it a year before, as if no one had set foot in it for a year. This rental is the closest we have ever found to a place that feels like home. Other visitors have remarked on how clean it is, and how well-stocked the kitchen is with cooking gear and utensils and some basic items like condiments that previous renters have left. Apparently everyone who rents here is in the habit of leaving it the way they would expect to find it, and it shows.

We spent our island time doing what islands are famous for: practically nothing. Each day we would get up, have coffee out on the deck, then plan our meals for the rest of the day. A trip to the store was next, if needed, then maybe a picnic lunch or a ride to the beach to watch the tide rising or falling. Then go back to the ‘Nest, grill that steak or chicken or fish on the awesome new grill, then call it a day. We have never had a better vacation.

Accuracy of listing: Check. Clean and well-maintained? See above. Customer service: Outstanding, these people know what they are doing. Recommend to a friend? Only if they don't want to go at the same time we want to go next year. Activities and restaurants: Loafing.

A delightful cottage on a lovely island

  • 5 of 5

A bright sunny space. No clutter. Good cooking facility and very comfortable sleeping. Islesboro is a low-key, lovely island and we particularly enjoyed the natural areas fronting on the ocean, for walking and exploring.

Outstanding property for a great price

  • 5 of 5

My family of 4 had a wonderful week at the Crow's Nest. I have done a number of vacation rentals all over the place and have not ever stayed in a house so well equipped . Everything is there that you need in terms of utensils and basic staple food items. Will do again next trip to Maine.

Definitely would recommend

What a glorious week, it was as if we had left Planet Earth for a few days, or as if the ferry was a time machine transporting us back a few decades. We went to three beaches, five times, (various tides); we had hoped to get out to Hutchins Island as the tide was coming in so we could have it to ourselves for a few hours, but that never happened. We scampered out once for a few minutes just before the bar submerged but we weren't prepared to stay for a few hours. Maybe another year.

You have done a great job renovating the house while maintaining its historic and Maine island character--it is spacious and sunny with ample indoor and outdoor space (that deck is a winner). As suggested, we made a big supermarket stop before boarding the ferry, but all our needs during the week (which were minimal) were met by the island stores. Even though the weather was perfect except for one overnight rainstorm, we mostly hung out at the house, it is that comfortable. One of us read three books, the other did a jigsaw puzzle and also disposed of a few books. The phone never rang (and we did have a dial tone, I checked) but the internet was there when we wanted it. We were On Vacation. What a glorious week, and the Crow’s Nest was a big part of it.

Car: necessary

Your own Maine island house in the middle of Penobscot Bay - - rent it for one week or more! Islesboro Island is perhaps the most beautiful of all Maine islands. A 14 mile long gem with secluded beaches and rocky coves, Islesboro’s simple and quiet elegance has made it world famous. Accessible via a 20 minute, gorgeous, ferry ride on a State of Maine ferry from Lincolnville Beach -- 10 minutes north of Camden, 15 minutes south of Belfast. The island is a unique community where the sea, the landscape, natural wonders, wildlife, and amazing historic homes are the attraction. This is a place that “time forgot.” If you are looking for movie theaters, amusement parks, bars, fast food, shopping, and crowds, this is NOT a place for you. Awesome kayaking, beach combing, walking, running, biking, and birding areas! Most of all, this is a place for complete relaxation. The world-class Farnsworth Art Museum is located less than 1 hour away -- on the mainland in Rockland -- this is a rare treat and worth a long visit on a rainy day.

Other Activities: Kayaking, wildlife viewing, local library, sight-seeing historic architecture, photography, world-class museums off-island.
