Recently completely refurbished, Glingerbank has masses of space for family get-togethers, wedding parties and business functions. Located only 5 miles from the M6/M74 it is the perfect place for groups coming from North and South to meet up and enjoy its extensive facilities.
There are 13 double bedrooms, most en-suite, but all with their own bathroom. All are tastefully decorated and furnished. All linen and towels are provided and all rooms are made up ready for your stay.
Downstairs, a large entrance hall, pretty drawing room, the huge panelled Oak room, elegant dining room, study, Kitchen, scullery and pantry. Finally the billiard room with full sized billiard table. There is a downstairs cloakroom and also a disabled loo.
There is WiFi (10mbs guaranteed) throughout and all bedrooms have Ethernet connections.
There are currently two flat screen smart televisions with DVD players, one in the oak room and one in the study. We plan to have TV in most bedrooms shortly.
There is a Bose Sound Touch sounds system.
Mobile phone reception is adequate on most networks, although 3G and 4G are not available.
The kitchen is well equipped with an electric range cooker, two dishwashers, two large larder fridges, freezer, microwave, food processor, washing machine and tumble dryer. Outside the beautifully tended gardens are perfect places for relaxation, play and reflection. Spring bulbs, azaleas and rhododendrons are the highlight. There is a charcoal barbecue. A Hot tub, outside chairs tables and sun loungers will be available from Spring 2018.
The house is isolated from other dwellings and looks over parkland. The property is reached by a 200m long private tarmac drive and there is plenty of parking space. Some fishing on The Border Esk may be available by arrangement . There is a tennis court nearby, which again can be used by arrangement. Dogs are welcome. There are good local walks on the Estate and plenty of variety in the surrounding area.
The area is steeped in history, when it was part of the debatable land, an area between England and Scotland where no rule of law applied until The Act of Union in 1603. The house, firstly a farmhouse, then a Victorian rectory was restyled and extended in 1903.
There is oil fired central heating and open fires in the drawing room and the hall.
Glingerbank is a great place to get away from it all with family or groups of friends. It is ideally situated for exploring The Roman Wall, Historic Carlisle and Gretna Green. Being close to the M6 and M74 means that it does not take long to venture further afield. The Lake District is easily accessible, Ullswater can be reached in forty minutes.
Being only half a mile from the Border, you also have the Scottish Borders to explore. The ice cream in Langholm is a must, and you can look for Cashmere bargains in Hawick. Visit Drumlanrigg, Floors and Hermitage Castles, Abbotsford and Bowhill. Edinburgh and Glasgow are easily accessible for day trip by car or train. Wildlife abounds and there is great bird watching locally, Bicycles can be hired locally in Longtown.
Longtown (3 miles) has the nearest shop, petrol station, pubs and cash points. Carlisle (11 miles) has most of the major supermarkets and a variety of bars, restaurants and nightclubs.
The Marchbank Hotel and Sportsman's restaurant 3/4 mile from the house has good food but only a table licence. The Bridge Inn at Penton promises to be an up market dining experience (opening Autumn 2017). The Robin Hood at Smithfield, The Salutation at Irthington and Smith's at Gretna Green are the pick of local eateries but there is plenty of choice in Carlisle.
The house is only 5 miles from Gretna Green and many couples have used our other property, Kirkandrews House, as their base for their happy day. We are also hoping to enable Church of England marriage services in the lovely Kirkandrews on Esk Church nearby (1 mile) and to host the reception at Glingerbank. This will require plenty of notice and the service will have to be arranged by the priest in charge.
The large Oak Room can easily be set up for business meetings and conferences for 100 or more attendees. There is a raised stage at one end for presentations and we are planning to install an overhead projection system over winter 2017/18
